NEW JERUSALEMGREEK BIBLE
After him arose Nathan, to prophesy in the time of David.1 και μετα τουτον ανεστη ναθαν προφητευειν εν ημεραις δαυιδ
As the fat is set apart from the communion sacrifice, so was David chosen out of the Israelites.2 ωσπερ στεαρ αφωρισμενον απο σωτηριου ουτως δαυιδ απο των υιων ισραηλ
He played with lions as though with kids, and with bears as though with lambs.3 εν λεουσιν επαιξεν ως εν εριφοις και εν αρκοις ως εν αρνασι προβατων
While stil a boy, did he not slay the giant and take away the people's shame, by hurling a stone fromhis sling and cutting short the boasting of Goliath?4 εν νεοτητι αυτου ουχι απεκτεινεν γιγαντα και εξηρεν ονειδισμον εκ λαου εν τω επαραι χειρα εν λιθω σφενδονης και καταβαλειν γαυριαμα του γολιαθ
For he cal ed on the Lord Most High, who gave strength to his right arm to put a mighty warrior to deathand assert the strength of his own people.5 επεκαλεσατο γαρ κυριον τον υψιστον και εδωκεν εν τη δεξια αυτου κρατος εξαραι ανθρωπον δυνατον εν πολεμω ανυψωσαι κερας λαου αυτου
Hence they gave him credit for ten thousand, and praised him while they blessed the Lord, by offeringhim a crown of glory.6 ουτως εν μυριασιν εδοξασαν αυτον και ηνεσαν αυτον εν ευλογιαις κυριου εν τω φερεσθαι αυτω διαδημα δοξης
For he destroyed the enemies on every front, he annihilated his foes, the Philistines, and crushed theirstrength for ever.7 εξετριψεν γαρ εχθρους κυκλοθεν και εξουδενωσεν φυλιστιιμ τους υπεναντιους εως σημερον συνετριψεν αυτων κερας
In al his activities he gave thanks to the Holy One Most High in words of glory; he put all his heart intohis songs out of love for his Creator.8 εν παντι εργω αυτου εδωκεν εξομολογησιν αγιω υψιστω ρηματι δοξης εν παση καρδια αυτου υμνησεν και ηγαπησεν τον ποιησαντα αυτον
He placed singers before the altar, melodiously to sing;9 και εστησεν ψαλτωδους κατεναντι του θυσιαστηριου και εξ ηχους αυτων γλυκαινειν μελη
he gave the feasts their splendour, the festivals their solemn pomp, causing the Lord's holy name tobe praised and the sanctuary to resound from dawn.10 εδωκεν εν εορταις ευπρεπειαν και εκοσμησεν καιρους μεχρι συντελειας εν τω αινειν αυτους το αγιον ονομα αυτου και απο πρωιας ηχειν το αγιασμα
The Lord took away his sins, making his strength ever greater; he gave him a royal covenant, and aglorious throne in Israel.11 κυριος αφειλεν τας αμαρτιας αυτου και ανυψωσεν εις αιωνα το κερας αυτου και εδωκεν αυτω διαθηκην βασιλεων και θρονον δοξης εν τω ισραηλ
A wise son succeeded him, who lived content, thanks to him.12 μετα τουτον ανεστη υιος επιστημων και δι' αυτον κατελυσεν εν πλατυσμω
Solomon reigned in a time of peace, and God gave him peace al round so that he could raise a houseto his name and prepare an everlasting sanctuary.13 σαλωμων εβασιλευσεν εν ημεραις ειρηνης ω ο θεος κατεπαυσεν κυκλοθεν ινα στηση οικον επ' ονοματι αυτου και ετοιμαση αγιασμα εις τον αιωνα
How wise you were despite your youth, like a river, brimming over with intelligence!14 ως εσοφισθης εν νεοτητι σου και ενεπλησθης ως ποταμος συνεσεως
Your mind ranged the earth, you fil ed it with mysterious sayings.15 γην επεκαλυψεν η ψυχη σου και ενεπλησας εν παραβολαις αινιγματων
Your name reached the distant islands, and you were loved for your peace.16 εις νησους πορρω αφικετο το ονομα σου και ηγαπηθης εν τη ειρηνη σου
Your songs, your proverbs, your sayings and your answers were the wonder of the world.17 εν ωδαις και παροιμιαις και παραβολαις και εν ερμηνειαις απεθαυμασαν σε χωραι
In the name of the Lord God, of him who is cal ed the God of Israel, you amassed gold like so muchtin, and made silver as common as lead.18 εν ονοματι κυριου του θεου του επικεκλημενου θεου ισραηλ συνηγαγες ως κασσιτερον το χρυσιον και ως μολιβον επληθυνας αργυριον
You abandoned your body to women, you became the slave of your appetites.19 παρανεκλινας τας λαγονας σου γυναιξιν και ενεξουσιασθης εν τω σωματι σου
You stained your honour, you profaned your stock, so bringing retribution on your children andaffliction for your fol y:20 εδωκας μωμον εν τη δοξη σου και εβεβηλωσας το σπερμα σου επαγαγειν οργην επι τα τεκνα σου και κατανυγηναι επι τη αφροσυνη σου
the empire split in two, from Ephraim arose a rebel kingdom.21 γενεσθαι διχα τυραννιδα και εξ εφραιμ αρξαι βασιλειαν απειθη
But the Lord never goes back on his mercy, never cancels any of his words, wil neither deny offspringto his elect nor stamp out the line of the man who loved him. And hence, he has granted a remnant to Jacob andto David a root sprung from him.22 ο δε κυριος ου μη καταλιπη το ελεος αυτου και ου μη διαφθειρη απο των λογων αυτου ουδε μη εξαλειψη εκλεκτου αυτου εκγονα και σπερμα του αγαπησαντος αυτον ου μη εξαρη και τω ιακωβ εδωκεν καταλειμμα και τω δαυιδ εξ αυτου ριζαν
Solomon rested with his ancestors, leaving one of his stock as his successor, the stupidest member ofthe nation, brainless Rehoboam, who drove the people to rebel.23 και ανεπαυσατο σαλωμων μετα των πατερων αυτου και κατελιπεν μετ' αυτον εκ του σπερματος αυτου λαου αφροσυνην και ελασσουμενον συνεσει ροβοαμ ος απεστησεν λαον εκ βουλης αυτου
Next, Jeroboam son of Nebat, who made Israel sin, and set Ephraim on the way of evil; from then ontheir sins multiplied so excessively as to drive them out of their country;24 και ιεροβοαμ υιος ναβατ ος εξημαρτεν τον ισραηλ και εδωκεν τω εφραιμ οδον αμαρτιας και επληθυνθησαν αι αμαρτιαι αυτων σφοδρα αποστησαι αυτους απο της γης αυτων
for they tried out every kind of wickedness, until vengeance overtook them.25 και πασαν πονηριαν εξεζητησαν εως εκδικησις ελθη επ' αυτους
