Sirach 32

NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 Have they made you the presider? Do not let it go to your head, behave like everyone else in the party,see that they are happy and then sit down yourself.	1 Non inorgoglirti se t'hanno posto a capo, sta' con i convitati come uno di loro, provvedi prima a loro e poi siedi.
2 Having discharged your duties, take your place so that your joy may be through theirs, and you mayreceive the crown for your competence.	2 Siediti, dopo aver espletato il tuo compito, per rallegrarti della loro allegrezza e ricevere la corona per le tue buone maniere.
3 Speak, old man -- it is proper that you should -- but with discretion: do not spoil the music.	3 Parla, o anziano, perché ti s'addice, ma con saggezza e senza intralciare la musica.
4 If someone is singing, do not ramble on and do not play the sage at the wrong moment.	4 Se c'è uno spettacolo, non versare parole, non sfoggiare sapienza fuori tempo.
5 An amber seal on a precious stone, such is a concert of music at a wine feast.	5 Rubino incastonato nel monile d'oro un concerto di mùsici mentre si beve il vino.
6 An emerald seal in a golden setting, such are strains of music with a vintage wine.	6 Smeraldo incastonato nell'oggetto d'oro la melodia dei mùsici con il dolce vino.
7 Speak, young man, when you must, but twice at most, and then only if questioned.	7 Parla, o giovane, se c'è bisogno, non più di due volte, solo se interrogato.
8 Keep to the point, say much in few words; give the impression of knowing but not wanting to speak.	8 Sintetizza il discorso, di' molto in poco, sii come chi sa, eppure tace.
9 Among eminent people do not behave as though you were their equal; do not make frivolous remarkswhen someone else is speaking.	9 Tra i grandi non darti importanza e tra gli anziani non ciarlare molto.
10 Lightning comes before the thunder, favour goes ahead of a modest person.	10 Prima del tuono s'affretta il lampo, così il favore precede l'uomo modesto.
11 Leave in good time, do not bring up the rear, and hurry home without loitering.	11 A'lzati in tempo e non attardarti, corri a casa senza perdere tempo.
12 There amuse yourself, and do what you have a mind to, but do not sin by arrogant talk.	12 Divèrtiti e appaga i tuoi desideri, ma non peccare con parole superbe.
13 And for all this bless your Creator, who intoxicates you with his favours.	13 Per tutto questo benedici il tuo Creatore che ti inebria con i suoi beni.
14 Whoever fears the Lord wil accept his correction; those who look for him wil win his favour.	14 Chi teme il Signore accoglie l'istruzione, quelli che vegliano trovano il suo favore.
15 Whoever seeks the Law wil be nourished by it, the hypocrite will find it a stumbling-block.	15 Chi scruta la legge ne sarà ripieno, ma l'ipocrita vi troverà scandalo.
16 Those who fear the Lord win his approval, their good deeds shining like a light.	16 Quanti temono il Signore sanno giudicare, brillano come luce i loro giudizi.
17 The sinner waves reproof aside, he finds an excuse for headstrong behaviour.	17 Il peccatore rifiuterà il rimprovero e prenderà la decisione che gli piace.
18 A sensible person never scorns a warning; foreigners and the proud do not know about fear.	18 L'uomo di senno non disprezza la riflessione, ma l'empio superbo non prova timore.
19 Never act without reflection, and you wil not regret your actions.	19 Non far nulla senza consiglio e non cambiare idea mentre stai operando.
20 Do not venture on a rough road, for fear of stumbling over the stones.	20 Non andare su strada scivolosa, così non batterai sulle pietre.
21 Do not be over-confident on an even road	21 Non avventurarti su strada inesplorata
22 and beware of your own children.	22 e guàrdati dai tuoi stessi figli.
23 Watch yourself in everything you do; this is also the way to keep the commandments.	23 In tutto quello che fai fidati di te stesso, poiché anche questo è secondo i comandamenti.
24 Anyone who trusts in the Law obeys its precepts, no one who has confidence in the Lord wil come toharm.	24 Chi crede nella legge bada ai comandamenti, chi confida nel Signore non sarà umiliato.
