Sirach 19

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA TINTORI
1 A drunken workman wil never grow rich, and one who makes light of small matters will gradual y sink.	1 L'operaio bevone non arricchirà, e chi non fa conto delle piccole cose a poco a poco andrà in rovina.
2 Wine and women corrupt intel igent men, the customer of whores loses al sense of shame.	2 Il vino e le donne fanno apostatare i sapienti e fan condannare i saggi.
3 Grubs and worms wil have him as their legacy, and the man who knows no shame will lose his life.	3 Chi pratica le male femmine diventerà malvagio, sarà preda della putredine e dei vermi, sarà mostrato come esempio famoso, e la sua anima sarà tolta dal numero (dei viventi).
4 Being too ready to trust shows shal owness of mind, and sinning harms the sinner.	4 Chi è corrivo a prestar fede, è leggero di cuore e ci scapiterà, e chi pecca contro l'anima sua sarà disprezzato.
5 Taking pleasure in evil earns condemnation;	5 Chi gode dell'iniquità sarà infamato, chi odia la correzione si abbrevierà la vita, e chi aborre le chiacchiere estingue il male.
6 by hating gossip one avoids evil.	6 Chi pecca contro l'anima sua se ne pentirà; chi gode nella malizia ne avrà infamia.
7 Never repeat what you are told and you wil come to no harm;	7 Non riportare una parola cattiva e offensiva: non ci scapiterai niente.
8 whether to friend or foe, do not talk about it, unless it would be sinful not to, do not reveal it;	8 Non manifestare i tuoi sentimenti all'amico e al nemico, e se hai peccato non lo svelare.
9 you would be heard out, then mistrusted, and in due course you would be hated.	9 Egli ti ascolterà, ti osserverà, e, facendo le viste di scusare il tuo peccato, ti odierà e ti starà sempre tra i piedi.
10 Have you heard something? Let it die with you. Courage! It wil not burst you!	10 Hai sentita una parola contro il tuo prossimo? Che essa muoia in te. Stai sicuro che non ti farà crepare.
11 A fool wil suffer birthpangs over a piece of news, like a woman labouring with child.	11 Per una parola sta in doglie di parto lo stolto, come una donna che abbia da fare un bambino.
12 Like an arrow stuck in the flesh of the thigh, so is a piece of news inside a fool.	12 Come saetta fìtta nella carne della coscia, così la parola nel cuore dello stolto.
13 Question your friend, he may have done nothing at al ; and if he has done anything, he wil not do itagain.	13 Correggi l'amico, per timore che non abbia capito e dica: « Non l'ho fatto », e, se l'ha fatto, perchè non torni a farlo.
14 Question your neighbour, he may have said nothing at al ; and if he has said anything, he wil not sayit again.	14 Correggi l'amico, che forse non avrà detto nulla, e, se l'ha detto, perchè non lo dica più.
15 Question your friend, for slander is very common, do not believe al you hear.	15 Correggi l'amico perchè spesso si metton fuori delle calunnie.
16 People sometimes make a slip, without meaning what they say; and which of us has never sinned byspeech?	16 E non credere a tutto quello che si dice: v'è chi pecca colla lingua, ma senza (cattiva) intenzione.
17 Question your neighbour before you threaten him, and defer to the Law of the Most High.	17 E chi c'è che non pecchi colla lingua? Correggi il prossimo, prima di passare alle minacce,
18	18 e dà luogo al timore dell'Altissimo. Ogni sapienza sta nel timor di Dio, in essa si ha il timor di Dio. In ogni sapienza c'è la disposizione (a osservare) la legge.
19	19 Non è sapienza l'arte della malizia, non è prudenza il consiglio dei peccatori.
20 Wisdom consists entirely in fearing the Lord, and wisdom is entirely constituted by the fulfil ing of theLaw.	20 C'è una malizia nella quale è l'esecrazione, e vi son degli stolti che difettano di sapienza.
21	21 E' da preferirsi uno scarso d'intelligenza e deficiente, ma timorato, ad uno ricco d'ingegno che trasgredisce la legge dell'Altissimo.
22 Being learned in evil, however, is not wisdom, there is no prudence in the advice of sinners.	22 V'è un'abilità sicura, ma ini­qua;
23 There is a cleverness that is detestable; whoever has no wisdom is a fool.	23 v'è chi dice parole sicure, esponendo la verità; e v'è chi maliziosamente s'umilia, ma ha il cuore pieno di frode.
24 Better be short of sense and ful of fear, than abound in shrewdness and violate the Law.	24 E v'è chi si sottomette anche troppo, con grande umiltà, e v'è chi china la sua faccia e finge di non vedere ciò che è segreto;
25 There is a wickedness which is scrupulous but nonetheless dishonest, and there are those whomisuse kindness to win their case.	25 ma se dalla mancanza di forze gli è impedito il peccato, appena troverà l'opportunità di fare il male, lo farà.
26 There is the person who wil walk bowed down with grief, when inwardly this is nothing but deceit:	26 L'uomo si conosce all'aspetto, e da ciò che apparisce sul volto si conosce uno di buon senso.
27 he hides his face and pretends to be deaf, if he is not unmasked, he wil take advantage of you.	27 La maniera di vestire, di ridere, di camminare ne fanno la spia.
28 There is the person who is prevented from sinning by lack of strength, yet he wil do wrong when hegets the chance.	28 V'è una correzione che è falsa per lo sdegno di chi ingiuria. V'è un giudizio che poi è provato non buono, e v'è chi tace, e lui è prudente.
29 You can tel a person by his appearance, you can tell a thinker by the look on his face.
30 The way a person dresses, the way he laughs, the way he walks, tel you what he is.
