Sirach 19

1 A drunken workman wil never grow rich, and one who makes light of small matters will gradual y sink.	1 L'operaio beone non arricchirà, e chi le piccole cose di sprezza, a poco a poco anderà in rovina.
2 Wine and women corrupt intel igent men, the customer of whores loses al sense of shame.	2 Il vino, e le donne fanno apostatare i saggi, e screditano i sensati.
3 Grubs and worms wil have him as their legacy, and the man who knows no shame will lose his life.	3 E chi fa lega con donna di mala vita, diverrà sfacciato: sarà retaggio della putredine, e de' vermini; egli sarà portato per grande esempio, e sarà levato dal numero dei viventi.
4 Being too ready to trust shows shal owness of mind, and sinning harms the sinner.	4 Chi è corrivo a credere, è leggero di cuore, e avranne il danno. Chi poi pecca contro l'anima propria, sarà stimato come uom da nulla.
5 Taking pleasure in evil earns condemnation;	5 Chi si gode dell'iniquità, sarà vituperato, e a chi odia la correzione, sarà abbreviata la vita: ma chi odia la loquacità, spegne la malizia:
6 by hating gossip one avoids evil.	6 Chi pecca contro l'anima propria, se ne pentirà; e colui, che si gode della malizia, n' avrà infamia.
7 Never repeat what you are told and you wil come to no harm;	7 Non riportare una parola cattivo, e offensiva, e non iscapiterai niente.
8 whether to friend or foe, do not talk about it, unless it would be sinful not to, do not reveal it;	8 Non manifestare i tuoi sentimenti all'amico, e al nimico, e se hai peccato, non lo svelare.
9 you would be heard out, then mistrusted, and in due course you would be hated.	9 Perocché quegli ascolterà, e starà: attento a te, e facendo le viste di scusare il tuo fallo, ti odierà, e così starà sempre intorno a te.
10 Have you heard something? Let it die with you. Courage! It wil not burst you!	10 Hai tu udita una parola contro il tuo prossimo? fa, ch'ella muoia dentro di te, e abbi fidanza, che non ti farà crcpare.
11 A fool wil suffer birthpangs over a piece of news, like a woman labouring with child.	11 Lo stolto per una parola sta ne' dolori del parto, come donna, che geme per mettere alla luce un bambino.
12 Like an arrow stuck in the flesh of the thigh, so is a piece of news inside a fool.	12 Freccia fitta nella carnosa coscia ell' è la parola nel cuor dello stolto.
13 Question your friend, he may have done nothing at al ; and if he has done anything, he wil not do itagain.	13 Correggi l'amico, il quale forse non ebbe (cattiva) intenzione, e dirà: ciò non feci io: che se lo avesse fatto, affinchè più nol faccia.
14 Question your neighbour, he may have said nothing at al ; and if he has said anything, he wil not sayit again.	14 Correggi l'amico, il qual forse non avrà detta quella tal cosa, e se la ha detta, affinchè più non la dica.
15 Question your friend, for slander is very common, do not believe al you hear.	15 Correggi l'amico; perché spesso si fanno delle calunnie.
16 People sometimes make a slip, without meaning what they say; and which of us has never sinned byspeech?	16 E non credere a tutto quel, che si dice. V'ha chi sdrucciola colla lingua; ma non per mala intenzione;
17 Question your neighbour before you threaten him, and defer to the Law of the Most High.	17 Perocché chi è colui, che non pecchi colla sua lingua? Correggi il prossimo prima di usar minacce,
18	18 E da luogo al timor dell'Altissimo: perché perfetta sapienza è il timor del Signore, ed in essa si ha il timore di Dio, e tutta la sapienza dispone ad adempiere la legge:
19	19 Perocché la sapienza non è l'arte di mal fare, e i consiglj de' peccatori non son prudenza.
20 Wisdom consists entirely in fearing the Lord, and wisdom is entirely constituted by the fulfil ing of theLaw.	20 Ella è malvagità, con cui va unita la esecrazione: e vi è uno stolto, che manca di giudicio.
21	21 E da preferirsi l'uomo, che manca di salacità, ed è privo di scienza, tua è timorato, a quello, che abbonda di avvedutezza, e trasgredisce la legge dell'Altissimo.
22 Being learned in evil, however, is not wisdom, there is no prudence in the advice of sinners.	22 V'ha una destrezza, che da nel segno, ma ella è iniqua.
23 There is a cleverness that is detestable; whoever has no wisdom is a fool.	23 Ed havvi chi con frutto discorre esponendo la verità. V'ha chi maliziosamente si umilia; ma il cuore di lui è pieno di frode:
24 Better be short of sense and ful of fear, than abound in shrewdness and violate the Law.	24 E v'ha chi si abbassa eccessiva mente con grandi sommissioni, e china la faccia, e finge di non vedere quello, che è segreto:
25 There is a wickedness which is scrupulous but nonetheless dishonest, and there are those whomisuse kindness to win their case.	25 Ma se per mancanza di forze gli è vietato di peccare, trovata ch'egli abbia l'opportunità di far del male, il farà.
26 There is the person who wil walk bowed down with grief, when inwardly this is nothing but deceit:	26 L'uomo si riconosce all'aspetto, e da quel, che apparisce sul volto, si conosce l'uomo assennato.
27 he hides his face and pretends to be deaf, if he is not unmasked, he wil take advantage of you.	27 La maniera di vestire, di ridere, e di camminare annunziano l'esser dell'uomo.
28 There is the person who is prevented from sinning by lack of strength, yet he wil do wrong when hegets the chance.	28 Havvi una correzione falsa, quand'uno per ira vomita ingiurie, e si fa giudizio, che si trova non esser retto; ed havvi che si tace, e questi è prudente.
29 You can tel a person by his appearance, you can tell a thinker by the look on his face.
30 The way a person dresses, the way he laughs, the way he walks, tel you what he is.
