Sirach 19

NEW JERUSALEM	JERUSALEM
1 A drunken workman wil never grow rich, and one who makes light of small matters will gradual y sink.	1 Un ouvrier buveur ne sera jamais riche, qui méprise les riens peu à peu s'appauvrit.
2 Wine and women corrupt intel igent men, the customer of whores loses al sense of shame.	2 Le vin et les femmes pervertissent les hommes sensés, qui fréquente les prostituées perdtoute pudeur.
3 Grubs and worms wil have him as their legacy, and the man who knows no shame will lose his life.	3 Des larves et des vers il sera la proie et l'homme téméraire y perdra la vie.
4 Being too ready to trust shows shal owness of mind, and sinning harms the sinner.	4 Celui qui a la confiance facile montre sa légèreté, celui qui pèche se fait tort à soi-même.
5 Taking pleasure in evil earns condemnation;	5 Celui qui prend plaisir au mal sera condamné,
6 by hating gossip one avoids evil.	6 celui qui hait le bavardage échappe au mal.
7 Never repeat what you are told and you wil come to no harm;	7 Ne rapporte jamais ce qu'on t'a dit et jamais on ne te nuira;
8 whether to friend or foe, do not talk about it, unless it would be sinful not to, do not reveal it;	8 à ton ami comme à ton ennemi ne raconte rien, à moins qu'il n'y ait faute pour toi, ne lerévèle pas;
9 you would be heard out, then mistrusted, and in due course you would be hated.	9 on t'écouterait, on se méfierait de toi et à l'occasion on te haïrait.
10 Have you heard something? Let it die with you. Courage! It wil not burst you!	10 As-tu entendu quelque chose? Sois un tombeau. Courage! tu n'en éclateras pas!
11 A fool wil suffer birthpangs over a piece of news, like a woman labouring with child.	11 Une parole entendue, et voilà le sot en travail comme la femme en mal d'enfant.
12 Like an arrow stuck in the flesh of the thigh, so is a piece of news inside a fool.	12 Une flèche plantée dans la cuisse, telle est une parole dans le ventre du sot.
13 Question your friend, he may have done nothing at al ; and if he has done anything, he wil not do itagain.	13 Va trouver ton ami: peut-être n'a-t-il rien fait, et s'il a fait quelque chose il nerecommencera pas.
14 Question your neighbour, he may have said nothing at al ; and if he has said anything, he wil not sayit again.	14 Va trouver ton voisin: peut-être n'a-t-il rien dit, et s'il a dit quelque chose il ne le redira pas.
15 Question your friend, for slander is very common, do not believe al you hear.	15 Va trouver ton ami, car on calomnie souvent, ne crois pas tout ce qu'on te dit.
16 People sometimes make a slip, without meaning what they say; and which of us has never sinned byspeech?	16 Souvent on glisse sans mauvaise intention; qui n'a jamais péché en parole?
17 Question your neighbour before you threaten him, and defer to the Law of the Most High.	17 Va trouver ton voisin avant d'en venir aux menaces, obéis à la loi du Très-Haut.

20 Wisdom consists entirely in fearing the Lord, and wisdom is entirely constituted by the fulfil ing of theLaw.	20 Toute sagesse est crainte du Seigneur et en toute sagesse il y a l'accomplissement de la loi.

22 Being learned in evil, however, is not wisdom, there is no prudence in the advice of sinners.	22 Mais connaître le mal n'est pas la sagesse et le conseil des pécheurs n'est pas la prudence.
23 There is a cleverness that is detestable; whoever has no wisdom is a fool.	23 Il y a un savoir-faire qui est abominable; est insensé celui à qui manque la sagesse.
24 Better be short of sense and ful of fear, than abound in shrewdness and violate the Law.	24 Mieux vaut être pauvre d'intelligence avec la crainte que surabonder de prudence et violerla loi.
25 There is a wickedness which is scrupulous but nonetheless dishonest, and there are those whomisuse kindness to win their case.	25 Il y a un habile savoir-faire au service de l'injustice et tel pour établir son droit use defourberie.
26 There is the person who wil walk bowed down with grief, when inwardly this is nothing but deceit:	26 Tel marche courbé sous le chagrin mais au fond de lui ce n'est que ruse:
27 he hides his face and pretends to be deaf, if he is not unmasked, he wil take advantage of you.	27 baissant la tête et faisant le sourd, s'il n'est pas démasqué il prend l'avantage sur toi.
28 There is the person who is prevented from sinning by lack of strength, yet he wil do wrong when hegets the chance.	28 Tel se sent trop faible pour pécher, qui fera le mal à la première occasion.
29 You can tel a person by his appearance, you can tell a thinker by the look on his face.	29 A son air on connaît un homme, à son visage on connaît l'homme de sens.
30 The way a person dresses, the way he laughs, the way he walks, tel you what he is.	30 L'habit d'un homme, son rire, sa démarche révèlent ce qu'il est.
