Sirach 19

NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 A drunken workman wil never grow rich, and one who makes light of small matters will gradual y sink.	1 Un obrero bebedor nunca se enriquecerá, y el que se descuida en lo pequeño, caerá poco a poco.
2 Wine and women corrupt intel igent men, the customer of whores loses al sense of shame.	2 Vino y mujeres extravían a los inteligentes, y el que anda con prostitutas es más temerario aún:
3 Grubs and worms wil have him as their legacy, and the man who knows no shame will lose his life.	3 la podredumbre y los gusanos se adueñarán de él, y el hombre temerario será extirpado.
4 Being too ready to trust shows shal owness of mind, and sinning harms the sinner.	4 El que se confía demasiado pronto, es un espíritu frívolo, y el que peca, se perjudica a sí mismo.
5 Taking pleasure in evil earns condemnation;	5 El que se complace en el mal será condenado,
6 by hating gossip one avoids evil.	6 y el que detesta la locuacidad se libra del mal.
7 Never repeat what you are told and you wil come to no harm;	7 No repitas jamás lo que has oído, y no perderás nada.
8 whether to friend or foe, do not talk about it, unless it would be sinful not to, do not reveal it;	8 No se lo digas a nadie, sea amigo o enemigo, y a no ser que incurras en pecado, no lo reveles:
9 you would be heard out, then mistrusted, and in due course you would be hated.	9 te escucharían, pero se pondrían en guardia contra ti y, llegado el momento, te odiarían.
10 Have you heard something? Let it die with you. Courage! It wil not burst you!	10 ¿Has oído algo? Que muera contigo; no tengas miedo, no te hará reventar.
11 A fool wil suffer birthpangs over a piece of news, like a woman labouring with child.	11 El necio sufre cuando guarda un secreto, como la parturienta por su criatura.
12 Like an arrow stuck in the flesh of the thigh, so is a piece of news inside a fool.	12 Como una flecha clavada en el muslo es el secreto en el pecho del necio.
13 Question your friend, he may have done nothing at al ; and if he has done anything, he wil not do itagain.	13 Aclara las cosas con tu amigo: a lo mejor no hizo nada, y si lo hizo, para que no lo vuelva a hacer.
14 Question your neighbour, he may have said nothing at al ; and if he has said anything, he wil not sayit again.	14 Aclara las cosas con tu prójimo: a lo mejor no dijo nada, y si lo dijo, para que no lo repita.
15 Question your friend, for slander is very common, do not believe al you hear.	15 Aclara las cosas con tu amigo: con frecuencia se calumnia, y no debes fiarte de todo lo que se dice.
16 People sometimes make a slip, without meaning what they say; and which of us has never sinned byspeech?	16 Se puede cometer un desliz sin querer, ¿y quién no ha pecado con su lengua?
17 Question your neighbour before you threaten him, and defer to the Law of the Most High.	17 Aclara las cosas con tu prójimo antes de amenazarlo, y luego da lugar a la Ley del Altísimo.
18	18 [Comienza por temer al Señor, y él te aceptará; si tienes sabiduría, él te amará.]
19	19 [El conocimiento de los mandamientos del Señor es una instrucción que da vida; los que hacen lo que le agrada recogerán los frutos del árbol de la inmortalidad.]
20 Wisdom consists entirely in fearing the Lord, and wisdom is entirely constituted by the fulfil ing of theLaw.	20 Toda sabiduría es temor del Señor y toda sabiduría entraña la práctica de la Ley.
21	21 [El servidor que dice a su señor: «No haré lo que te agrada», incluso si después lo hace, irrita a aquel que lo alimenta.]
22 Being learned in evil, however, is not wisdom, there is no prudence in the advice of sinners.	22 No es sabiduría saber hacer el mal y no hay prudencia en el consejo de los pecadores.
23 There is a cleverness that is detestable; whoever has no wisdom is a fool.	23 Hay una astucia que resulta abominable, y el que carece de sabiduría es insensato.
24 Better be short of sense and ful of fear, than abound in shrewdness and violate the Law.	24 Es preferible el poco inteligente que teme al Señor, al muy inteligente que quebranta la Ley.
25 There is a wickedness which is scrupulous but nonetheless dishonest, and there are those whomisuse kindness to win their case.	25 Hay una astucia sutil, pero injusta, y hay quien usa de artimañas para hacer valer su derecho.
26 There is the person who wil walk bowed down with grief, when inwardly this is nothing but deceit:	26 Hay un malvado que va encorvado por la tristeza, pero su interior está lleno de falsedad:
27 he hides his face and pretends to be deaf, if he is not unmasked, he wil take advantage of you.	27 se cubre el rostro y aparenta no oír, pero si nadie lo ve, te saca ventaja.
28 There is the person who is prevented from sinning by lack of strength, yet he wil do wrong when hegets the chance.	28 Si le falta fuerza para pecar, cuando encuentre una ocasión, te perjudicará.
29 You can tel a person by his appearance, you can tell a thinker by the look on his face.	29 Por la mirada se reconoce a un hombre, y por su aspecto, al hombre sabio.
30 The way a person dresses, the way he laughs, the way he walks, tel you what he is.	30 La vestimenta del hombre, su manera de reír y todo su porte revelan lo que él es.
