1 A drunken workman wil never grow rich, and one who makes light of small matters will gradual y sink.	1 Un ouvrier buveur ne deviendra jamais riche; qui se néglige dans les petites choses déchoira petit à petit.
2 Wine and women corrupt intel igent men, the customer of whores loses al sense of shame.	2 Le vin et les femmes corrompent les meilleurs; qui fréquente les prostituées perdra toute honte.
3 Grubs and worms wil have him as their legacy, and the man who knows no shame will lose his life.	3 Il n’y gagnera que la pourriture et les vers: ainsi finira celui qui n’a plus de honte.
4 Being too ready to trust shows shal owness of mind, and sinning harms the sinner.	4 Qui fait trop vite confiance est une tête légère, qui cède au péché se fait du tort à lui-même.
5 Taking pleasure in evil earns condemnation;	5 Qui se complaît dans la médisance sera condamné,
6 by hating gossip one avoids evil.	6 qui déteste les bavardages échappe au mal.
7 Never repeat what you are told and you wil come to no harm;	7 Ne répète jamais ce qu’on t’a dit, et jamais tu n’auras à en souffrir.
8 whether to friend or foe, do not talk about it, unless it would be sinful not to, do not reveal it;	8 Ne dis rien à personne, ami ou ennemi; ne le répète pas, sauf si ton silence devait être coupable.
9 you would be heard out, then mistrusted, and in due course you would be hated.	9 On t’écouterait sans doute, mais après on se méfierait de toi et à la fin on te détesterait.
10 Have you heard something? Let it die with you. Courage! It wil not burst you!	10 As-tu entendu quelque chose? Enterre-le en toi; courage, cela ne te fera pas éclater!
11 A fool wil suffer birthpangs over a piece of news, like a woman labouring with child.	11 Pour un mot qu’il a entendu, le sot est dans les douleurs, il est comme une femme qui attend un bébé.
12 Like an arrow stuck in the flesh of the thigh, so is a piece of news inside a fool.	12 Le secret est insupportable aux entrailles du sot: c’est pour lui comme une flèche plantée dans sa cuisse.
13 Question your friend, he may have done nothing at al ; and if he has done anything, he wil not do itagain.	13 Explique-toi avec ton prochain: peut-être n’a-t-il rien fait, et s’il l’a fait, il ne le fera plus.
14 Question your neighbour, he may have said nothing at al ; and if he has said anything, he wil not sayit again.	14 Explique-toi avec ton prochain: peut-être n’a-t-il rien dit, et s’il l’a dit, il ne recommencera pas.
15 Question your friend, for slander is very common, do not believe al you hear.	15 Explique-toi avec ton prochain, car souvent on calomnie: ne crois pas tout ce qu’on raconte.
16 People sometimes make a slip, without meaning what they say; and which of us has never sinned byspeech?	16 Il arrive qu’on glisse sans mauvaise intention; qui n’a jamais péché par la langue?
17 Question your neighbour before you threaten him, and defer to the Law of the Most High.	17 Explique-toi donc avec ton prochain avant d’en venir aux menaces: ensuite tu t’en tiendras à la Loi du Très-Haut.

20 Wisdom consists entirely in fearing the Lord, and wisdom is entirely constituted by the fulfil ing of theLaw.	20 La crainte du Seigneur est le tout de la sagesse; en toute sagesse il y a la pratique de la Loi.

22 Being learned in evil, however, is not wisdom, there is no prudence in the advice of sinners.	22 Savoir faire le mal n’est pas une sagesse; elle n’est pas davantage dans les desseins des pécheurs.
23 There is a cleverness that is detestable; whoever has no wisdom is a fool.	23 Il y a une forme d’habileté qui est odieuse: elle est folie, puisqu’elle n’a nulle sagesse.
24 Better be short of sense and ful of fear, than abound in shrewdness and violate the Law.	24 Mieux vaut avoir l’esprit limité et craindre le Seigneur, qu’être habile à transgresser la Loi.
25 There is a wickedness which is scrupulous but nonetheless dishonest, and there are those whomisuse kindness to win their case.	25 Il y a une habileté qui ne cherche que l’injustice: on défigure les choses en prétendant faire valoir le droit.
26 There is the person who wil walk bowed down with grief, when inwardly this is nothing but deceit:	26 Il se fait la victime, il va plié sous le fardeau, mais au fond ce n’est que comédie.
27 he hides his face and pretends to be deaf, if he is not unmasked, he wil take advantage of you.	27 Il cache son visage et fait le sourd, mais attention: à la première distraction il te roulera.
28 There is the person who is prevented from sinning by lack of strength, yet he wil do wrong when hegets the chance.	28 Un autre ne pèche pas parce qu’il n’en a pas les moyens; à la première occasion il fera le mal.
29 You can tel a person by his appearance, you can tell a thinker by the look on his face.	29 C’est au regard qu’on reconnaît un homme, c’est à son visage qu’on connaît l’homme responsable.
30 The way a person dresses, the way he laughs, the way he walks, tel you what he is.	30 La façon dont un homme s’habille, sa façon de rire et de marcher disent ce qu’il est.
