¹ A drunken workman wil never grow rich, and one who makes light of small matters will gradual y sink.	¹ Wer das tut, wird niemals reich, wer das wenige gering schätzt, richtet sich zugrunde.
² Wine and women corrupt intel igent men, the customer of whores loses al sense of shame.	² Wein und Weiber machen das Herz zügellos; wer sich an Dirnen hängt, wird frech.
³ Grubs and worms wil have him as their legacy, and the man who knows no shame will lose his life.	³ [Moder und Würmer nehmen ihn in Besitz, freche Gier richtet den zugrunde, über den sie herrscht.]
⁴ Being too ready to trust shows shal owness of mind, and sinning harms the sinner.	⁴ Wer schnell vertraut, ist leichtfertig, wer sündigt, verfehlt sich gegen sich selbst.
⁵ Taking pleasure in evil earns condemnation;	⁵ Wer sich über eine Schlechtigkeit freut, wird selbst verachtet, [wer den Lüsten widerstrebt, krönt sein Leben.
⁶ by hating gossip one avoids evil.	⁶ Wer seine Zunge beherrscht, lebt ohne Streit;] wer Gerede verbreitet, dem fehlt es an Verstand.
⁷ Never repeat what you are told and you wil come to no harm;	⁷ Verbreite niemals ein Gerede, dann wird auch dich niemand schmähen.
⁸ whether to friend or foe, do not talk about it, unless it would be sinful not to, do not reveal it;	⁸ Rede weder über Freund noch Feind; wenn du einen Freund hast, enthülle nichts über ihn!
⁹ you would be heard out, then mistrusted, and in due course you would be hated.	⁹ Denn wer dich hört, wird sich vor dir hüten und dir zur gegebenen Zeit seinen Groll zeigen.
¹⁰ Have you heard something? Let it die with you. Courage! It wil not burst you!	¹⁰ Hast du etwas gehört, so sterbe es in dir; sei unbesorgt, es wird dich nicht zerreißen.
¹¹ A fool wil suffer birthpangs over a piece of news, like a woman labouring with child.	¹¹ Um eines Wortes willen kommt der Tor in Wehen wie eine Gebärende durch ihre Leibesfrucht.
¹² Like an arrow stuck in the flesh of the thigh, so is a piece of news inside a fool.	¹² Wie ein Pfeil im Schenkel sitzt, so steckt das Wort im Leib des Toren.
¹³ Question your friend, he may have done nothing at al ; and if he has done anything, he wil not do itagain.	¹³ Stell den Freund zur Rede, ob er etwas getan hat, und wenn er es getan hat - damit er es nicht wieder tut.
¹⁴ Question your neighbour, he may have said nothing at al ; and if he has said anything, he wil not sayit again.	¹⁴ Stell deinen Nächsten zur Rede, ob er etwas gesagt hat, und wenn er es gesagt hat - damit er es nicht wiederholt.
¹⁵ Question your friend, for slander is very common, do not believe al you hear.	¹⁵ Stell den Freund zur Rede, denn oft gibt es Verleumdung; trau nicht jedem Wort!
¹⁶ People sometimes make a slip, without meaning what they say; and which of us has never sinned byspeech?	¹⁶ Mancher gleitet aus, doch ohne Absicht. Wer hätte noch nie mit seiner Zunge gesündigt?
¹⁷ Question your neighbour before you threaten him, and defer to the Law of the Most High.	¹⁷ Stell deinen Nächsten zur Rede, ehe du ihm Vorwürfe machst. Gib dem Gesetz des Höchsten Raum!

²² Being learned in evil, however, is not wisdom, there is no prudence in the advice of sinners.	²² Schlechtes zu kennen ist keine Weisheit, der Rat der Sünder ist keine Klugheit.
²³ There is a cleverness that is detestable; whoever has no wisdom is a fool.	²³ Es gibt eine Schläue, die ein Gräuel ist, und es gibt Einfältige, die nichts Schlechtes tun.
²⁴ Better be short of sense and ful of fear, than abound in shrewdness and violate the Law.	²⁴ Besser ist es, arm an Klugheit und gottesfürchtig zu sein, als reich an Einsicht, aber das Gesetz zu übertreten.

²⁷ he hides his face and pretends to be deaf, if he is not unmasked, he wil take advantage of you.	²⁷ Er schlägt den Blick nieder und stellt sich taub; wo er nicht durchschaut wird, tritt er gegen dich auf.
²⁸ There is the person who is prevented from sinning by lack of strength, yet he wil do wrong when hegets the chance.	²⁸ Wenn ihm die Kraft fehlt, Unrecht zu tun, tut er doch Böses, sobald er Gelegenheit findet.
²⁹ You can tel a person by his appearance, you can tell a thinker by the look on his face.	²⁹ Am Aussehen erkennt man den Menschen, am Gesichtsausdruck erkennt ihn der Weise.
³⁰ The way a person dresses, the way he laughs, the way he walks, tel you what he is.	³⁰ Die Kleidung des Menschen offenbart sein Verhalten, die Schritte des Menschen zeigen, was an ihm ist.
