Sirach 19

NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 A drunken workman wil never grow rich, and one who makes light of small matters will gradual y sink.	1 Chi sgobba ma s'ubriaca non arricchisce, e chi disprezza le piccole perdite presto va in rovina.
2 Wine and women corrupt intel igent men, the customer of whores loses al sense of shame.	2 Il vino e le donne fanno perdere il senno, ma è più pericoloso bazzicare le prostitute.
3 Grubs and worms wil have him as their legacy, and the man who knows no shame will lose his life.	3 Putredine e vermi saranno la sua sorte, l'uomo senza scrupoli sarà spiantato.
4 Being too ready to trust shows shal owness of mind, and sinning harms the sinner.	4 Chi si fida troppo presto è di cuore leggero, e chi fa il peccato sbaglia a suo danno.
5 Taking pleasure in evil earns condemnation;	5 Chi si rallegra nel male sarà condannato,
6 by hating gossip one avoids evil.	6 e chi odia le chiacchiere evita tanti guai.
7 Never repeat what you are told and you wil come to no harm;	7 Non ripetere la parola udita, così non avrai mai danno.
8 whether to friend or foe, do not talk about it, unless it would be sinful not to, do not reveal it;	8 Non propagare le cose dell'amico o del nemico, parla solo se il silenzio diventa complicità.
9 you would be heard out, then mistrusted, and in due course you would be hated.	9 Venutolo a sapere, l'altro starà guardingo con te, e quando avrà l'occasione te la farà pagare.
10 Have you heard something? Let it die with you. Courage! It wil not burst you!	10 Se hai sentito una parola, essa muoia con te; sta' tranquillo che non ti scoppierà dentro.
11 A fool wil suffer birthpangs over a piece of news, like a woman labouring with child.	11 Di fronte a un segreto lo stolto ha le doglie, come una donna al momento del parto.
12 Like an arrow stuck in the flesh of the thigh, so is a piece of news inside a fool.	12 Come freccia conficcata nella carne è il segreto nel petto dello stolto.
13 Question your friend, he may have done nothing at al ; and if he has done anything, he wil not do itagain.	13 Con l'amico, verifica la dicerìa sul suo conto, se fosse vera, non continuerà a sbagliare.
14 Question your neighbour, he may have said nothing at al ; and if he has said anything, he wil not sayit again.	14 Tratta con l'interessato quanto gli si attribuisce, così, se l'ha detto, non lo ripeterà.
15 Question your friend, for slander is very common, do not believe al you hear.	15 Appura con l'amico quello che spesso è una calunnia, e non credere a tutto quello che senti.
16 People sometimes make a slip, without meaning what they say; and which of us has never sinned byspeech?	16 Si può scivolare, ma senza volerlo, e chi non ha sbagliato con la lingua?
17 Question your neighbour before you threaten him, and defer to the Law of the Most High.	17 Richiama il tuo vicino, prima di minacciarlo, così osserverai la legge dell'Altissimo.
18	18 Tutta la sapienza è timore del Signore, e in ogni sapienza c'è la pratica della legge.
19	19 La conoscenza del male non è sapienza, e non c'è senno nel consiglio dei peccatori.
20 Wisdom consists entirely in fearing the Lord, and wisdom is entirely constituted by the fulfil ing of theLaw.	20 C'è un'astuzia che è abominevole e chi manca di sapienza è un dissennato.
21	21 E' meglio il timore del Signore con poca intelligenza che l'eccellere della mente con l'offesa della legge.
22 Being learned in evil, however, is not wisdom, there is no prudence in the advice of sinners.	22 C'è un'astuzia cavillosa e quindi ingiusta, e c'è chi imbroglia ma per ottenere la sentenza giusta.
23 There is a cleverness that is detestable; whoever has no wisdom is a fool.	23 C'è il malvagio che si mostra piegato dall'afflizione mentre dentro è pieno di menzogna;
24 Better be short of sense and ful of fear, than abound in shrewdness and violate the Law.	24 fingendosi sordo e con la testa bassa, quando non è visto ti scavalcherà;
25 There is a wickedness which is scrupulous but nonetheless dishonest, and there are those whomisuse kindness to win their case.	25 se non ti nuoce per mancanza di forza, alla prima occasione ti farà del male.
26 There is the person who wil walk bowed down with grief, when inwardly this is nothing but deceit:	26 L'uomo si può riconoscere a prima vista, e chi è saggio da come si presenta.
27 he hides his face and pretends to be deaf, if he is not unmasked, he wil take advantage of you.	27 L'abbigliamento, il sorriso dei denti, il modo d'incedere rivelano il suo tipo.
28 There is the person who is prevented from sinning by lack of strength, yet he wil do wrong when hegets the chance.
29 You can tel a person by his appearance, you can tell a thinker by the look on his face.
30 The way a person dresses, the way he laughs, the way he walks, tel you what he is.
