Sirach 18

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA RICCIOTTI
1 He who lives for ever has created the sum of things.	1 Colui che vive in eterno creò insieme tutte le cose. Il Signore solo è giusto, e sussiste invitto re in eterno.
2 The Lord alone wil be found just.	2 Chi è da tanto da raccontarne le opere?
3	3 chi può scrutare le sue magnificenze?
4 He has given no one the power to proclaim his works to the end, and who can fathom his magnificentdeeds?	4 Chi esprimerà la potenza della sua grandezza? e chi potrà ridire la sua misericordia?
5 Who can assess his magnificent strength, and who can go further and tel al of his mercies?	5 Nulla c'è da togliere, nulla da aggiungere; nè è possibile penetrare i portenti di Dio.
6 Nothing can be added to them, nothing subtracted, it is impossible to fathom the marvels of the Lord.	6 Quando l'uomo avrà finito [di cercare], sarà [appena] al principio, e quando avrà cessato, si troverà stordito.
7 When someone finishes he is only beginning, and when he stops he is as puzzled as ever.	7 Cos'è l'uomo e a che serve? che cos'è il bene di lui e che il suo male?
8 What is a human being, what purpose does he serve? What is good and what is bad for him?	8 Il numero de' giorni dell'uomo, a dir molto, è di cento anni: come una goccia d'acqua del mare e un granello d'arena, così pochi son gli anni nel giorno dell'eternità!
9 The length of his life: a hundred years at most.	9 Perciò il Signore è paziente con gli uomini, ed effonde su loro la sua misericordia.
10 Like a drop of water from the sea, or a grain of sand, such are these few years compared with eternity.	10 Egli vede la presunzione del loro cuore ch'è cattiva, e conosce la loro rovina ch'è triste;
11 This is why the Lord is patient with them and pours out his mercy on them.	11 perciò abbonda con essi in indulgenza, e mostra loro la via della giustizia.
12 He sees and recognises how wretched their end is, and so he makes his forgiveness the greater.	12 La pietà dell'uomo è verso il suo vicino; ma la misericordia del Signore [si stende] a ogni carne.
13 Human compassion extends to neighbours, but the Lord's compassion extends to everyone; rebuking,correcting and teaching, bringing them back as a shepherd brings his flock.	13 E compatisce, ammaestra, corregge, [riconduce] come un pastore il suo gregge.
14 He has compassion on those who accept correction, and who fervently search for his judgements.	14 Ha pietà di chi accetta la correzione della [sua] misericordia, e di chi è sollecito ne' suoi precetti.
15 My child, do not temper your favours with blame nor any of your gifts with words that hurt.	15 Figliuolo, ne' benefizi [che fai] non infligger vituperio, e in un dono qualsiasi non dar tristezza con male parole.
16 Does not dew relieve the heat? In the same way a word is worth more than a gift.	16 La rugiada non smorza forse l'ardore [del vento d'Oriente]? così la parola vai meglio del dono.
17 Why surely, a word is better than a good present, but a generous person is ready with both.	17 Ecco, non è forse una parola amichevole da più d'un buon dono? or l'una or l'altro si ritrovan presso l'uomo dabbene.
18 A fool wil offer nothing but insult, and a grudging gift makes the eyes smart.	18 Lo stolto brutalmente offende, e il dono del malevolo fa strugger gli occhi.
19 Learn before you speak, take care of yourself before you fal ill.	19 Prima di giudicare, fatti provvista di giudizio; prima di parlare impara.
20 Examine yourself before judgement comes, and on the day of visitation you will be acquitted.	20 Prima della malattia curati, e prima del giudizio esamina te stesso, e al cospetto di Dio troverai propiziazione.
21 Humble yourself before you fall il , repent as soon as the sin is committed.	21 Prima d'ammalarti umiliati, e nel tempo dell'infermità mostra la tua [buona] condotta,
22 Let nothing prevent your discharging a vow in good time, and do not wait till death to set matters right.	22 Nulla ti trattenga dal pregar sempre, nè ti peritare di accrescere la tua giustizia sino alla morte, perchè la ricompensa di Dio dura in eterno.
23 Prepare yourself before making a vow, and do not be like someone who tempts the Lord.	23 Prima della preghiera disponi l'anima tua, e non essere come uno che tenta Iddio.
24 Bear in mind the retribution of the last days, the time of vengeance when God averts his face.	24 Ricordati dell'ira [divina] nel dì finale, e del tempo della retribuzione, quando Egli volterà in là la faccia.
25 In a time of plenty remember times of famine, think of poverty and want when you are rich.	25 Ricordati della penuria nel tempo dell'abbondanza, e degli stenti della miseria ne' giorni della ricchezza.
26 The time slips by between dawn and dusk, everything passes quickly for the Lord.	26 Dalla mattina alla sera si muta il tempo; e tutto, così, rapidamente si cambia al cospetto di Dio.
27 The wise wil be cautious in everything, in sinful times wil take care not to offend.	27 L'uomo saggio va cauto in ogni cosa, e ne' giorni de' peccati si guarda da' falli.
28 Every person of sense recognises wisdom, and wil respect anyone who has found her.	28 Ogni intelligente riconosce la sapienza, e a chi l'ha trovata rende omaggio.
29 Those who understand sayings have toiled for their wisdom and have poured out accurate maxims.	29 Gl'intenditori di [saggi] detti, son savi essi stessi, e comprendono la verità e la giustizia, e spandono quasi pioggia proverbi e sentenze.
30 Do not be governed by your passions, restrain your desires.	30 Non andar dietro alle tue passioni, e allontanati dalle tue voglie.
31 If you al ow yourself to satisfy your desires, this wil make you the laughing-stock of your enemies.	31 Se accorderai all'anima tua le sue passioni, farà di te il ludibrio de' tuoi nemici.
32 Do not indulge in luxurious living, do not get involved in such society.	32 Non prender gusto ai disordini, per piccoli che siano, perchè continuamente In essi si commette [del male].
33 Do not beggar yourself by banqueting on credit when there is nothing in your pocket.	33 Non t'impoverire per gare [di lusso e stravizi], prendendo a prestito, quando nulla hai nella borsa: perchè vorresti male alla tua propria vita.
