Sirach 18

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA MARTINI
1 He who lives for ever has created the sum of things.	1 Colui, che vive in eterno, creò tutte insieme le cose. Iddio solo sarà riconosciuto giusto, ed egli è il Re invincibile, che sussiste in eterno.
2 The Lord alone wil be found just.	2 Chi è capace di raccontare le opere fatte da lui?
3	3 Ma chi può penetrare le sue meraviglie?
4 He has given no one the power to proclaim his works to the end, and who can fathom his magnificentdeeds?	4 E la onnipotente grandezza di lui chi mai la spiegherà? O chi tenterà di riferire le sue misericordie?
5 Who can assess his magnificent strength, and who can go further and tel al of his mercies?	5 Nulla v'è da levare, né da aggiungere alle mirabili opere di Dio, e queste sono incomprensibili.
6 Nothing can be added to them, nothing subtracted, it is impossible to fathom the marvels of the Lord.	6 Quando l'uomo avrà finito, allora sarà da capo, e quando si fermerà, sarà, nell'incertezza.
7 When someone finishes he is only beginning, and when he stops he is as puzzled as ever.	7 Che è l'uomo? ed a che può egli esser utile? e che è il bene, o il male di lui?
8 What is a human being, what purpose does he serve? What is good and what is bad for him?	8 Il numero de' giorni dell'uomo al più di cento anni: come una goccia di acqua marina, e come un granello d'arena, così son questi pochi anni al di dell'eternità.
9 The length of his life: a hundred years at most.	9 Per questo il Signore è paziente con essi, e versa sopra di loro la sua misericordia.
10 Like a drop of water from the sea, or a grain of sand, such are these few years compared with eternity.	10 Vede egli la presunzione del loro cuore cattiva, e la perdizione loro, che è deplorabile.
11 This is why the Lord is patient with them and pours out his mercy on them.	11 Per questo una piena benignità, usa con essi, e mostra loro la via dell'equità.
12 He sees and recognises how wretched their end is, and so he makes his forgiveness the greater.	12 La compassione dell'uomo è verso il suo prossimo; ma la misericordia di Dio ad ogni carne si estende.
13 Human compassion extends to neighbours, but the Lord's compassion extends to everyone; rebuking,correcting and teaching, bringing them back as a shepherd brings his flock.	13 Egli ha misericordia, e gli ammaestra, e li guida come fa un pastor col suo gregge.
14 He has compassion on those who accept correction, and who fervently search for his judgements.	14 Egli è benigno con quegli, che ascoltano il magistero della misericordia, e sono solleciti nell'eseguire i suoi precetti.
15 My child, do not temper your favours with blame nor any of your gifts with words that hurt.	15 Figliuolo, non aggiugnere al benefizio i rimproveri, e al dono, che tu facci, non unire l'asprezza di male parole.
16 Does not dew relieve the heat? In the same way a word is worth more than a gift.	16 Non è egli vero, che la rugiada tempera il caldo? così pure la buona parola vai più del dono.
17 Why surely, a word is better than a good present, but a generous person is ready with both.	17 Non vedi tu, che la parola vai più del dono? ma l'uomo giusto ha l'una, e l'altra cosa.
18 A fool wil offer nothing but insult, and a grudging gift makes the eyes smart.	18 Lo stolto fa degli odiosi rimproveri, e il dono dell'uomo mal costumato fa strugger gli occhi.
19 Learn before you speak, take care of yourself before you fal ill.	19 Prima del giudizio assicurati di tua giustizia, e prima di parlare, impara.
20 Examine yourself before judgement comes, and on the day of visitation you will be acquitted.	20 Prima di cadere in languore prendi la medicina, e prima del giudizio disamina te stesso, e dinanzi a Dio troverai misericordia.
21 Humble yourself before you fall il , repent as soon as the sin is committed.	21 Prima di cader nella malattia umiliati, e nel tempo di tua infermità fa conoscere la tua conversione.
22 Let nothing prevent your discharging a vow in good time, and do not wait till death to set matters right.	22 Nissuna cosa ti ritenga dal sempre orare, e non dubitare di far opere di giustizia fino alla morte: perocché la mercede di Dio dura in eterno.
23 Prepare yourself before making a vow, and do not be like someone who tempts the Lord.	23 Prima dell'orazione prepara l'anima tua, non essere come uno, che tenti Dio.
24 Bear in mind the retribution of the last days, the time of vengeance when God averts his face.	24 Ricordati dell'ira (che verrà) nel di finale, e del tempo della retribuzione, quando (Dio) cangerà di visaggio.
25 In a time of plenty remember times of famine, think of poverty and want when you are rich.	25 Ricordati della povertà nel tempo di abbondanza, e delle miserie della povertà nel tempo di ricchezza.
26 The time slips by between dawn and dusk, everything passes quickly for the Lord.	26 Dal mattino alla sera il tempo si cambierà, e tutto quesio si fa ben presto sotto gli occhi di Dio.
27 The wise wil be cautious in everything, in sinful times wil take care not to offend.	27 L'uomo saggio teme di tutto; e ne' giorni de' peccati si guarderà dalla negligenza.
28 Every person of sense recognises wisdom, and wil respect anyone who has found her.	28 Ogni uomo sensato sa distinguere la saggezza, e da lode a chi l'ha trovata.
29 Those who understand sayings have toiled for their wisdom and have poured out accurate maxims.	29 Gli uomini giudiziosi si diportano con prudenza nel parlare, e intendono la verità, e la giustizia, e spargono quasi pioggia proverbi, e sentenze.
30 Do not be governed by your passions, restrain your desires.	30 Non andar dietro alle tue cupidità, e raffrena i tuoi appetiti.
31 If you al ow yourself to satisfy your desires, this wil make you the laughing-stock of your enemies.	31 Se soddisfarai le cupidità dell'anima tua, ella farà, che abbian di te allegrezza i tuoi nemici.
32 Do not indulge in luxurious living, do not get involved in such society.	32 Non prender piacere ai tumulti, anche di piccol momento; perocché vi ai trovano conflitti perpetui.
33 Do not beggar yourself by banqueting on credit when there is nothing in your pocket.	33 Guardati dall'impoverire prendendo a usura per contendere, mentre hai vuoto il sacchetto; perocché saresti ingiusto contro la tua propria vita.
