Sirach 18

NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 He who lives for ever has created the sum of things.	1 El que vive para siempre creó todas las cosas por igual;
2 The Lord alone wil be found just.	2 sólo el Señor será hallado justo y no hay otro fuera de él.
3	3 El gobierna el mundo con la palma de la mano y todo obedece a su voluntad, ya que él, por su poder, es el Rey de todas las cosas y separa las sagradas de las profanas.
4 He has given no one the power to proclaim his works to the end, and who can fathom his magnificentdeeds?	4 A nadie le dio el poder de anunciar sus obras: ¿quién rastreará su grandeza?
5 Who can assess his magnificent strength, and who can go further and tel al of his mercies?	5 ¿Quién podrá medir la magnitud de su fuerza y quién pretenderá narrar sus misericordias?
6 Nothing can be added to them, nothing subtracted, it is impossible to fathom the marvels of the Lord.	6 No hay nada que quitar, nada que añadir, y es imposible rastrear las maravillas del Señor.
7 When someone finishes he is only beginning, and when he stops he is as puzzled as ever.	7 Cuando el hombre llega al fin, está sólo al comienzo; cuando se detiene, no sale de su estupor.
8 What is a human being, what purpose does he serve? What is good and what is bad for him?	8 ¿Qué es el hombre? ¿Para qué sirve? ¿Cuál es su bien y cuál es su mal?
9 The length of his life: a hundred years at most.	9 La vida de un hombre dura cien años a lo más:
10 Like a drop of water from the sea, or a grain of sand, such are these few years compared with eternity.	10 como una gota del mar y como un grano de arena, son sus pocos años frente a la eternidad.
11 This is why the Lord is patient with them and pours out his mercy on them.	11 Por eso el Señor es paciente con ellos y derrama sobre ellos su misericordia.
12 He sees and recognises how wretched their end is, and so he makes his forgiveness the greater.	12 El ve y conoce qué miserable es su fin, y por eso multiplica su perdón.
13 Human compassion extends to neighbours, but the Lord's compassion extends to everyone; rebuking,correcting and teaching, bringing them back as a shepherd brings his flock.	13 El hombre sólo tiene misericordia de su prójimo, pero el Señor es misericordioso con todos los vivientes. El reprende, corrige y enseña, y los hace volver como el pastor a su rebaño.
14 He has compassion on those who accept correction, and who fervently search for his judgements.	14 El tiene misericordia con los que aceptan la instrucción y está siempre dispuestos a cumplir sus decretos.
15 My child, do not temper your favours with blame nor any of your gifts with words that hurt.	15 Hijo mío, no eches en cara los beneficios que haces ni acompañes tus dones con palabras ofensivas.
16 Does not dew relieve the heat? In the same way a word is worth more than a gift.	16 ¿No calma el rocío el calor ardiente? Así, una buena palabra puede más que un regalo.
17 Why surely, a word is better than a good present, but a generous person is ready with both.	17 ¿Acaso no vale más una palabra que un obsequio? Pero el hombre caritativo sabe unir las dos cosas.
18 A fool wil offer nothing but insult, and a grudging gift makes the eyes smart.	18 El necio reprende sin ningún miramiento y el don del avaro hace correr las lágrimas.
19 Learn before you speak, take care of yourself before you fal ill.	19 Antes de hablar, instrúyete, y cuídate antes de caer enfermo.
20 Examine yourself before judgement comes, and on the day of visitation you will be acquitted.	20 Antes de juzgar, examínate a ti mismo, y hallarás perdón cuando el Señor te visite.
21 Humble yourself before you fall il , repent as soon as the sin is committed.	21 Humíllate antes de caer enfermo y arrepiéntete apenas hayas pecado.
22 Let nothing prevent your discharging a vow in good time, and do not wait till death to set matters right.	22 Que nada te impida cumplir tus votos en el momento debido, y no esperes hasta la muerte para estar en regla.
23 Prepare yourself before making a vow, and do not be like someone who tempts the Lord.	23 Antes de hacer un voto, prepárate a cumplirlo, y no seas como un hombre que tienta al Señor.
24 Bear in mind the retribution of the last days, the time of vengeance when God averts his face.	24 Recuerda la ira de los últimos días y el tiempo del castigo, cuando el Señor apartará su rostro.
25 In a time of plenty remember times of famine, think of poverty and want when you are rich.	25 En tiempo de abundancia, recuerda el tiempo de hambre, y en los días de riqueza, la pobreza y la penuria.
26 The time slips by between dawn and dusk, everything passes quickly for the Lord.	26 De la mañana a la tarde, el tiempo cambia, y todo pasa rápidamente delante del Señor.
27 The wise wil be cautious in everything, in sinful times wil take care not to offend.	27 El hombre sabio está siempre alerta, y en la ocasión de pecado, se cuida para no faltar.
28 Every person of sense recognises wisdom, and wil respect anyone who has found her.	28 Todo hombre prudente conoce la sabiduría y rinde homenaje al que la encuentra.
29 Those who understand sayings have toiled for their wisdom and have poured out accurate maxims.	29 Los que hablan con sensatez son sabios ellos mismos y derraman como lluvia proverbios acertados
30 Do not be governed by your passions, restrain your desires.	30 No te dejes guiar por tus pasiones, sino refrena tus deseos.
31 If you al ow yourself to satisfy your desires, this wil make you the laughing-stock of your enemies.	31 Si cedes a los impulsos de la pasión, ella hará de ti la irrisión de tus enemigos.
32 Do not indulge in luxurious living, do not get involved in such society.	32 Que tu alegría no consista en darte todos los gustos ni te endeudes para pagar lo que ellos cuestan.
33 Do not beggar yourself by banqueting on credit when there is nothing in your pocket.	33 No te empobrezcas yendo de fiesta con dinero prestado, cuando no tienes nada en el bolsillo.
