Sirach 18

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBLIA
1 He who lives for ever has created the sum of things.	1 El que vive eternamente lo creó todo por igual,
2 The Lord alone wil be found just.	2 sólo el Señor será llamado justo.
3
4 He has given no one the power to proclaim his works to the end, and who can fathom his magnificentdeeds?	4 A nadie dio poder de proclamar sus obras, pues ¿quién podrá rastrear sus maravillas?
5 Who can assess his magnificent strength, and who can go further and tel al of his mercies?	5 El poder de su majestad, ¿quién lo calculará? ¿quién pretenderá contar sus misericordias?
6 Nothing can be added to them, nothing subtracted, it is impossible to fathom the marvels of the Lord.	6 Nada hay que quitar, nada que añadir, y no se pueden rastrear las maravillas del Señor.
7 When someone finishes he is only beginning, and when he stops he is as puzzled as ever.	7 Cuando el hombre cree acabar, comienza entonces, cuando se para, se queda perplejo.
8 What is a human being, what purpose does he serve? What is good and what is bad for him?	8 ¿Qué es el hombre? ¿para qué sirve? ¿cuál es su bien y cuál su mal?
9 The length of his life: a hundred years at most.	9 El número de los días del hombre mucho será si llega a los cien años.
10 Like a drop of water from the sea, or a grain of sand, such are these few years compared with eternity.	10 Como gota de agua del mar, como grano de arena, tan pocos son sus años frente a la eternidad.
11 This is why the Lord is patient with them and pours out his mercy on them.	11 Por eso el Señor es paciente con ellos, y derrama sobre ellos su misericordia.
12 He sees and recognises how wretched their end is, and so he makes his forgiveness the greater.	12 El ve y sabe que su fin es miserable, por eso multiplica su perdón.
13 Human compassion extends to neighbours, but the Lord's compassion extends to everyone; rebuking,correcting and teaching, bringing them back as a shepherd brings his flock.	13 La misericordia del hombre sólo alcanza a su prójimo, la misericorida del Señor abarca a todo el mundo. El reprende, adoctrina y enseña, y hace volver, como un pastor, a su rebaño.
14 He has compassion on those who accept correction, and who fervently search for his judgements.	14 Tiene piedad de los que acogen la instrucción, y de los que se afanan por sus juicios.
15 My child, do not temper your favours with blame nor any of your gifts with words that hurt.	15 Hijo, con tus beneficios no mezcles el reproche ni a tus regalos juntes palabras tristes.
16 Does not dew relieve the heat? In the same way a word is worth more than a gift.	16 ¿No aplaca el rocío el viento ardiente? Así vale más la palabra que el regalo.
17 Why surely, a word is better than a good present, but a generous person is ready with both.	17 ¿No ves que la palabra es más que un buen presente? Pues el hombre dadivoso une los dos.
18 A fool wil offer nothing but insult, and a grudging gift makes the eyes smart.	18 El necio aun sin dar hace afrenta, quema los ojos el don del envidioso.
19 Learn before you speak, take care of yourself before you fal ill.	19 Antes de hablar infórmate, cuídate antes de estar enfermo.
20 Examine yourself before judgement comes, and on the day of visitation you will be acquitted.	20 Antes de juzgar examínate a ti mismo, y en el día de la visita encontrarás perdón.
21 Humble yourself before you fall il , repent as soon as the sin is committed.	21 Antes de estar enfermo humíllate, cuando peques muestra arrepentimiento.
22 Let nothing prevent your discharging a vow in good time, and do not wait till death to set matters right.	22 Nada te impida cumplir tu voto en el momento dado, no aguardes hasta la muerte para justificarte.
23 Prepare yourself before making a vow, and do not be like someone who tempts the Lord.	23 Antes de hacer un voto prepárate; no seas como el hombre que tienta al Señor.
24 Bear in mind the retribution of the last days, the time of vengeance when God averts his face.	24 Acuérdate de la ira de los últimos días, y del momento del castigo, cuando Dios vuelva su rostro.
25 In a time of plenty remember times of famine, think of poverty and want when you are rich.	25 En tiempo de abundancia recuerda el tiempo de hambre, la pobreza y la penuria en días de riqueza.
26 The time slips by between dawn and dusk, everything passes quickly for the Lord.	26 De la mañana a la tarde corre el tiempo, todo pasa presto delante del Señor.
27 The wise wil be cautious in everything, in sinful times wil take care not to offend.	27 El hombre sabio es precavido en todo, en la ocasión de pecar se anda con cuidado.
28 Every person of sense recognises wisdom, and wil respect anyone who has found her.	28 Todo hombre prudente conoce la sabiduría, al que la encuentra le da su parabién.
29 Those who understand sayings have toiled for their wisdom and have poured out accurate maxims.	29 Los prudentes en palabras hacen sabiduría y prodigan los proverbios acertados.
30 Do not be governed by your passions, restrain your desires.	30 No vayas detrás de tus pasiones, tus deseos refrena.
31 If you al ow yourself to satisfy your desires, this wil make you the laughing-stock of your enemies.	31 Si te consientes en todos los deseos, te harás la irrisión de tus enemigos.
32 Do not indulge in luxurious living, do not get involved in such society.	32 No te complazcas en la buena vida, no te avengas a asociarte con ella.
33 Do not beggar yourself by banqueting on credit when there is nothing in your pocket.	33 No te empobrezcas festejando con dinero prestado, cuando nada tienes en tu bolsa.
