NEW JERUSALEMLXX
A sagacious ruler educates his people, and he makes his subjects understand order.1 κριτης σοφος παιδευσει τον λαον αυτου και ηγεμονια συνετου τεταγμενη εσται
As the magistrate is, so will his officials be, as the governor is, so wil be the inhabitants of his city.2 κατα τον κριτην του λαου ουτως και οι λειτουργοι αυτου και κατα τον ηγουμενον της πολεως παντες οι κατοικουντες αυτην
An undisciplined king wil be the ruin of his people, a city owes its prosperity to the intel igence of itsleading men.3 βασιλευς απαιδευτος απολει τον λαον αυτου και πολις οικισθησεται εν συνεσει δυναστων
The government of the earth is in the hands of the Lord, he sets the right leader over it at the right time.4 εν χειρι κυριου η εξουσια της γης και τον χρησιμον εγερει εις καιρον επ' αυτης
Human success is in the hands of the Lord. He invests the scribe with honour.5 εν χειρι κυριου ευοδια ανδρος και προσωπω γραμματεως επιθησει δοξαν αυτου
Do not resent your neighbour's every offence, and never act in a fit of passion.6 επι παντι αδικηματι μη μηνιασης τω πλησιον και μη πρασσε μηδεν εν εργοις υβρεως
Pride is hateful to God and humanity, and injustice is abhorrent to both.7 μισητη εναντι κυριου και ανθρωπων υπερηφανια και εξ αμφοτερων πλημμελης η αδικια
Sovereignty passes from nation to nation because of injustice, arrogance and money.8 βασιλεια απο εθνους εις εθνος μεταγεται δια αδικιας και υβρεις και χρηματα
What has dust and ashes to pride itself on? Even in life its entrails are repel ent.9 τι υπερηφανευεται γη και σποδος οτι εν ζωη ερριψα τα ενδοσθια αυτου
A long illness makes a fool of the doctor; a king today is a corpse tomorrow.10 μακρον αρρωστημα σκωπτει ιατρος και βασιλευς σημερον και αυριον τελευτησει
For in death the portion of al alike wil be insects, wild animals and worms.11 εν γαρ τω αποθανειν ανθρωπον κληρονομησει ερπετα και θηρια και σκωληκας
The first stage of pride is to desert the Lord and to turn one's heart away from one's Maker.12 αρχη υπερηφανιας ανθρωπου αφιστασθαι απο κυριου και απο του ποιησαντος αυτον απεστη η καρδια αυτου
Since the first stage of pride is sin, whoever clings to it will pour forth filth. This is why the Lord inflictsunexpected punishments on such people, utterly destroying them.13 οτι αρχη υπερηφανιας αμαρτια και ο κρατων αυτης εξομβρησει βδελυγμα δια τουτο παρεδοξασεν κυριος τας επαγωγας και κατεστρεψεν εις τελος αυτους
The Lord has turned mighty princes off their thrones and seated the humble there instead.14 θρονους αρχοντων καθειλεν ο κυριος και εκαθισεν πραεις αντ' αυτων
The Lord has plucked up the proud by the roots, and planted the lowly in their place.15 ριζας εθνων εξετιλεν ο κυριος και εφυτευσεν ταπεινους αντ' αυτων
The Lord has overthrown the lands of the nations and destroyed them to the very foundations of theearth.16 χωρας εθνων κατεστρεψεν ο κυριος και απωλεσεν αυτας εως θεμελιων γης
Sometimes he has taken them away and destroyed them, and blotted out their memory from the earth.17 εξηρεν εξ αυτων και απωλεσεν αυτους και κατεπαυσεν απο γης το μνημοσυνον αυτων
Pride was not created for human beings, nor furious rage for those born of woman.18 ουκ εκτισται ανθρωποις υπερηφανια ουδε οργη θυμου γεννημασιν γυναικων
What race deserves honour? The human race. What race deserves honour? Those who fear the Lord. What race deserves contempt? The human race. What race deserves contempt? Those who break the Law.19 σπερμα εντιμον ποιον σπερμα ανθρωπου σπερμα εντιμον ποιον οι φοβουμενοι τον κυριον σπερμα ατιμον ποιον σπερμα ανθρωπου σπερμα ατιμον ποιον οι παραβαινοντες εντολας
A leader is honoured by his brothers, and those who fear the Lord are honoured by him.20 εν μεσω αδελφων ο ηγουμενος αυτων εντιμος και οι φοβουμενοι κυριον εν οφθαλμοις αυτου
21 -
The rich, the noble, the poor, let them pride themselves on fearing the Lord.22 πλουσιος και ενδοξος και πτωχος το καυχημα αυτων φοβος κυριου
It is not right to despise one who is poor but intel igent, and it is not good to honour one who is asinner.23 ου δικαιον ατιμασαι πτωχον συνετον και ου καθηκει δοξασαι ανδρα αμαρτωλον
Magnate, magistrate, potentate, all are to be honoured, but none is greater than the one who fears theLord.24 μεγισταν και κριτης και δυναστης δοξασθησεται και ουκ εστιν αυτων τις μειζων του φοβουμενου τον κυριον
A wise slave wil have free men waiting on him, and the enlightened wil not complain.25 οικετη σοφω ελευθεροι λειτουργησουσιν και ανηρ επιστημων ου γογγυσει
Do not try to be smart when you do your work, do not put on airs when you are in difficulties.26 μη σοφιζου ποιησαι το εργον σου και μη δοξαζου εν καιρω στενοχωριας σου
Better the hardworking who has plenty of everything, than the pretentious at a loss for a meal.27 κρεισσων εργαζομενος και περισσευων εν πασιν η περιπατων δοξαζομενος και απορων αρτων
My child, be modest in your self-esteem, and value yourself at your proper worth.28 τεκνον εν πραυτητι δοξασον την ψυχην σου και δος αυτη τιμην κατα την αξιαν αυτης
Who can justify one who inflicts injuries on himself, or respect one who is ful of self-contempt?29 τον αμαρτανοντα εις την ψυχην αυτου τις δικαιωσει και τις δοξασει τον ατιμαζοντα την ζωην αυτου
The poor is honoured for wit, and the rich for wealth.30 πτωχος δοξαζεται δι' επιστημην αυτου και πλουσιος δοξαζεται δια τον πλουτον αυτου
Honoured in poverty, how much the more in wealth! Dishonoured in wealth, how much the more inpoverty!31 ο δεδοξασμενος εν πτωχεια και εν πλουτω ποσαχως και ο αδοξος εν πλουτω και εν πτωχεια ποσαχως
