Yes, natural y stupid are all who are unaware of God, and who, from good things seen, have not beenable to discover Him-who-is, or, by studying the works, have not recognised the Artificer.1 Certamente furono fatui, per natura, tutti quegli uomini che rimasero presi nell’ignoranza di Dio, e, per via dei beni visibili, non seppero conoscere Colui che è, né arrivarono all’artefice, facendo attenzione alle opere!
Fire, however, or wind, or the swift air, the sphere of the stars, impetuous water, heaven's lamps, arewhat they have held to be the gods who govern the world.2 Ma o il fuoco o il vento o la fluida aria o il giro degli astri o le acque impetuose o i luminari del cielo ritennero per dèi che governano il mondo.
If, charmed by their beauty, they have taken these for gods, let them know how much the Master ofthese excels them, since he was the very source of beauty that created them.3 Ora, se attratti dalla bellezza, ritennero per dèi queste cose, sappiano, dunque, quanto più bello è il loro Signore! È proprio il Principe e l’Autore della belezza che le ha create.
And if they have been impressed by their power and energy, let them deduce from these how muchmightier is he that has formed them,4 E se sono colpiti dal potere e dalla loro efficienza, intendano da ciò quanto più è potente chi le ha costruite!
since through the grandeur and beauty of the creatures we may, by analogy, contemplate their Author.5 Dalla grandezza, infatti, e dalla bellezza delle creature, se ne intuisce, per via di confronti, il loro primo fattore.
Small blame, however, attaches to them, for perhaps they go astray only in their search for God andtheir eagerness to find him;6 Pure, a costoro va un biasimo minore: perché forse essi hanno potuto sviare presto, nel cercare e voler trovare Dio.
familiar with his works, they investigate them and fal victim to appearances, seeing so much beauty.7 Trattando infatti le opere di lui, cercano, ma si lasciano convincere dall’apparenza per le belle cose che vedono.
But even so, they have no excuse:8 Ecco nemmeno essi vanno giustificati:
if they are capable of acquiring enough knowledge to be able to investigate the world, how have theybeen so slow to find its Master?9 capaci, infatti, di saper tanto da rendersi conto dell’universo, come non ne hanno trovato più presto il Signore?
But wretched are they, with their hopes set on dead things, who have given the title of gods to humanartefacts, gold or silver, skilfully worked, figures of animals, or useless stone, carved by some hand long ago.10 Ma disgraziati quelli la cui speranza è in cose morte; coloro che invocano per dèi le opere delle mani dell’uomo, l’oro e l’argento lavorati con arte, figure di anima, o pietre insignificanti, opera di mano antica!
Take a woodcutter. He fel s a suitable tree, neatly strips off the bark al over and then with admirableskil works the wood into an object useful in daily life.11 Se un legnaiuolo capace, dopo aver segato un tronco trattabile, lo scorteccia accuratamente attorno, e, dopo aver messo in opera bellamente l'arte, ne fa un arnese, utile agli usi della della vita,
The bits left over from his work he uses for cooking his food, then eats his fil .12 lo scarto del suo lavoro, gli serve a far da mangiare. E si sazia.
There is stil a good-for-nothing bit left over, a gnarled and knotted bil et: he takes it and whittles itwith the concentration of his leisure hours, he shapes it with the skill of experience, he gives it a human shape13 Dopo, ciò che resta, non serve a nulla, un ceppo distorto e cresciuto con nodi, dopo averlo preso lo sbozza con garbo e, consacrandogli il suo ozio, gli dà la figura, con un’abilità da diletto, lo riduce a immagine di uomo,
or perhaps he makes it into some vile animal, smears it with ochre, paints its surface red, coats overal its blemishes.14 o lo forma a guisa di qualche animale vile. Datogli quindi il minio e coloratagli in rosso la pelle e verniciata ogni macchia,
He next makes a worthy home for it, lets it into the wal , fixes it with an iron clamp.15 e dopo avergli fatto un cantuccio degno, lo colloca nella parete, assicurandolo con il ferro.
Thus he makes sure that it will not fal down -- being wel aware that it cannot help itself, since it isonly an image, and needs to be helped.16 Egli allora prende cura di lui affinché non cada, sapendo che non si può aiutare: è infatti un simulacro e ha bisogno di aiuto.
And yet, if he wishes to pray for his goods, for his marriage, for his children, he does not blush toharangue this lifeless thing -- for health, he invokes what is weak,17 Pregandolo per i beni e per le sue nozze e per i figli, non si vergogna di parlare a uno, privo di anima. Per la salute invoca ciò che è infermo
for life, he pleads with what is dead, for help, he goes begging to total inexperience, for a journey,what cannot even use its feet,18 e, per la vita, prega ciò che è morto; supplica di aiuto chi non può rendere servizio, per un viaggio chi non sa camminare;
for profit, an undertaking, and success in pursuing his craft, he asks skil from something whosehands have no skil whatever.19 per negozi e imprese, per prosperosità nell’opera chiede abilità a chi è assai inabile di mani!
