NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 Yes, natural y stupid are all who are unaware of God, and who, from good things seen, have not beenable to discover Him-who-is, or, by studying the works, have not recognised the Artificer.	1 Veramente sono vani per natura tutti gli uomini che ignorano Dio e che dai beni visibili non furono capaci di conoscere colui che è, né, considerando le opere, seppero riconoscere l'artefice,
2 Fire, however, or wind, or the swift air, the sphere of the stars, impetuous water, heaven's lamps, arewhat they have held to be the gods who govern the world.	2 ma o il fuoco o il vento o l'aria veloce o la volta stellata o l'acqua impetuosa o i luminari del cielo stimarono dèi, governatori del mondo.
3 If, charmed by their beauty, they have taken these for gods, let them know how much the Master ofthese excels them, since he was the very source of beauty that created them.	3 Se, dilettati dalla loro bontà, hanno ritenuto dèi tali cose, sappiano quanto più buono di loro è il Signore, perché chi li ha creati è la sorgente della bontà.
4 And if they have been impressed by their power and energy, let them deduce from these how muchmightier is he that has formed them,	4 Se li ha colpiti la forza e l'energia, riconoscano quanto più potente di loro è colui che le ha formate.
5 since through the grandeur and beauty of the creatures we may, by analogy, contemplate their Author.	5 Infatti dalla grandezza e bontà delle creature, ragionando, si può conoscere il loro autore.
6 Small blame, however, attaches to them, for perhaps they go astray only in their search for God andtheir eagerness to find him;	6 Tuttavia, per costoro minore è il biasimo, perché essi forse s'ingannano mentre cercano e vogliono trovare Dio.
7 familiar with his works, they investigate them and fal victim to appearances, seeing so much beauty.	7 Vivendo in mezzo alle sue opere, ricercano e si lasciano persuadere dall'apparenza, perché buono è ciò che si vede.
8 But even so, they have no excuse:	8 Ma neppure costoro sono scusabili;
9 if they are capable of acquiring enough knowledge to be able to investigate the world, how have theybeen so slow to find its Master?	9 perché se tanto furono capaci di conoscere, da poter scrutare il corso del mondo, come mai non hanno trovato più presto il loro Signore?
10 But wretched are they, with their hopes set on dead things, who have given the title of gods to humanartefacts, gold or silver, skilfully worked, figures of animals, or useless stone, carved by some hand long ago.	10 Infelici invece coloro le cui speranze sono in cose morte, coloro che invocarono come dèi le opere di mani umane, oro e argento, lavorati con arte, immagini di animali o una pietra inutile, opera di mano antica.
11 Take a woodcutter. He fel s a suitable tree, neatly strips off the bark al over and then with admirableskil works the wood into an object useful in daily life.	11 Ecco che un falegname tagliò un albero facile a lavorarsi, ne staccò diligentemente tutta la corteccia, lo lavorò convenientemente e ne formò un oggetto utile ai bisogni della vita,
12 The bits left over from his work he uses for cooking his food, then eats his fil .	12 mentre bruciò gli avanzi del lavoro per prepararsi il cibo e saziarsi.
13 There is stil a good-for-nothing bit left over, a gnarled and knotted bil et: he takes it and whittles itwith the concentration of his leisure hours, he shapes it with the skill of experience, he gives it a human shape	13 L'avanzo di quanto non era buono a nulla, un pezzo di legno tortuoso e pieno di nodi, egli lo prese e lo incise con cura nei momenti di tempo libero, e, meccanicamente, nel riposo gli diede una forma, lo raffigurò a un'immagine di uomo,
14 or perhaps he makes it into some vile animal, smears it with ochre, paints its surface red, coats overal its blemishes.	14 o lo fece simile a qualche animale vile; lo spalmò di minio e tinse di belletto rosso la sua superficie, fece scomparire ogni macchia,
15 He next makes a worthy home for it, lets it into the wal , fixes it with an iron clamp.	15 gli fece un'abitazione degna di lui e lo pose nella parete, assicurandolo con ferro.
16 Thus he makes sure that it will not fal down -- being wel aware that it cannot help itself, since it isonly an image, and needs to be helped.	16 Perché non avesse a cadere, si prese cura di lui, sapendo che non può aiutarsi da sé: infatti è un'immagine e ha bisogno di aiuto.
17 And yet, if he wishes to pray for his goods, for his marriage, for his children, he does not blush toharangue this lifeless thing -- for health, he invokes what is weak,	17 Pregando per i beni, per le nozze e per i figli, non si vergogna di rivolgere la parola a una cosa inanimata; per la salute invoca ciò che è debole,
18 for life, he pleads with what is dead, for help, he goes begging to total inexperience, for a journey,what cannot even use its feet,	18 per la vita prega ciò che è morto, per un aiuto supplica il più inesperto, per un viaggio chi non può servirsi dei piedi,
19 for profit, an undertaking, and success in pursuing his craft, he asks skil from something whosehands have no skil whatever.	19 per un guadagno, un'impresa e il successo negli affari chiede energia a chi non ha vigore nelle mani.
