NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA TINTORI
1 Yes, natural y stupid are all who are unaware of God, and who, from good things seen, have not beenable to discover Him-who-is, or, by studying the works, have not recognised the Artificer.	1 Vani son tutti gli uomini che non han cognizione di Dio, e dai beni visibili non han saputo co­ noscere colui che è, e dalla consi­derazione delle opere non han saputo conoscere chi ne fosse l'ar­tefice.
2 Fire, however, or wind, or the swift air, the sphere of the stars, impetuous water, heaven's lamps, arewhat they have held to be the gods who govern the world.	2 Ma il fuoco, il vento e la mobile aria o il giro delle stelle o l'onda impetuosa, o il sole o la luna presero come dèi reggitori del mondo.
3 If, charmed by their beauty, they have taken these for gods, let them know how much the Master ofthese excels them, since he was the very source of beauty that created them.	3 Che se, rapiti dalla loro bellezza, li credettero dèi argomentino quanto più bello debba essere il loro Signore, es­sendo tutte queste cose fatte dall'autore della bellezza.
4 And if they have been impressed by their power and energy, let them deduce from these how muchmightier is he that has formed them,	4 Se poi sono colpiti dal loro potere e dalla loro influenza, da ciò dovreb­bero capire che chi l'ha fatte de­ve sorpassarle in potenza.
5 since through the grandeur and beauty of the creatures we may, by analogy, contemplate their Author.	5 Infatti dalla grandezza e dalla bel­lezza delle creature si può giun­gere a vedere in modo da ricono­scerlo il loro creatore.
6 Small blame, however, attaches to them, for perhaps they go astray only in their search for God andtheir eagerness to find him;	6 Eppure questi sono i meno biasimevoli, perchè sbagliano per caso, ma cercano Dio e bramano di trovar­lo.
7 familiar with his works, they investigate them and fal victim to appearances, seeing so much beauty.	7 Mentre però lo cercano, in­vestigandone le opere, rimango­no presi da queste, perchè son belle e visibili,
8 But even so, they have no excuse:	8 però non sono scusabili,
9 if they are capable of acquiring enough knowledge to be able to investigate the world, how have theybeen so slow to find its Master?	9 perchè se giunsero a saperne tanto da potersi fare un'i­dea dell'universo, come non tro­vare più facilmente il Signore di esso?
10 But wretched are they, with their hopes set on dead things, who have given the title of gods to humanartefacts, gold or silver, skilfully worked, figures of animals, or useless stone, carved by some hand long ago.	10 Ma sciagurati, colla speran­za in cose morte, son quelli che danno il nome di dèi agli ogget­ti fatti dall'uomo, all'oro, all'ar­gento lavorato con arte, a ritrat­ti d'animali, ad un vil sasso ope­ra d'antica mano.
11 Take a woodcutter. He fel s a suitable tree, neatly strips off the bark al over and then with admirableskil works the wood into an object useful in daily life.	11 Ecco: un abile legnatolo sega nel bosco una dritta pianta, e, come si deve, ne toglie tutta la scorza; poi col­ la sua arte ne forma un mobile per gli usi della vita.
12 The bits left over from his work he uses for cooking his food, then eats his fil .	12 Degli avanzi di tal lavoro ne usa per pre­pararsi da mangiare.
13 There is stil a good-for-nothing bit left over, a gnarled and knotted bil et: he takes it and whittles itwith the concentration of his leisure hours, he shapes it with the skill of experience, he gives it a human shape	13 L'avanzo poi di tutte queste cose, buono a nulla, pezzo di legno sbilenco e pieno di nodi, a tempo avanzato lo digrossa diligentemente, e, se­ condo le regole dell'arte sua, gli dà una figura: lo fa simile all'imagine d'un uomo,
14 or perhaps he makes it into some vile animal, smears it with ochre, paints its surface red, coats overal its blemishes.	14 oppure gli dà la figura di qualche animale. Poi lo tinge col minio e col bel­ letto fa rubicondo il suo colore, dopo averne coperta ogni maga­gna.
15 He next makes a worthy home for it, lets it into the wal , fixes it with an iron clamp.	15 In seguito gli fa un'edico­ la conveniente, lo mette al muro e ve lo assicura con un ferro;
16 Thus he makes sure that it will not fal down -- being wel aware that it cannot help itself, since it isonly an image, and needs to be helped.	16 cosi perchè non caschi si dà cura di lui, ben sapendo che non può aiutarsi da se stesso, perchè è una statua ed ha bisogno d'aiuto.
17 And yet, if he wishes to pray for his goods, for his marriage, for his children, he does not blush toharangue this lifeless thing -- for health, he invokes what is weak,	17 E poi a lui fa voti e lo consulta sui suoi beni, sui suoi figli, sui ma­trimoni, e non si vergogna di par­lare ad un oggetto inanimato.
18 for life, he pleads with what is dead, for help, he goes begging to total inexperience, for a journey,what cannot even use its feet,	18 Per la sanità prega un infer­mo, per la vita si raccomanda ad un morto, e chiama in suo aiu­to uno che non è buono a nulla.
19 for profit, an undertaking, and success in pursuing his craft, he asks skil from something whosehands have no skil whatever.	19 Per fare un viaggio si racco­manda a chi non può muoversi, per fare acquisti o lavori e pel felice esito di qualsiasi cosa si raccomanda a chi non è buono a niente.
