1 Yes, natural y stupid are all who are unaware of God, and who, from good things seen, have not beenable to discover Him-who-is, or, by studying the works, have not recognised the Artificer.	1 Or vani sono tutti gli uomini, i quali non hanno cognizione di Dio; e dalle buone cose, che veggonsi non sono giunti a conoscere colui, che è, né dalla considerazione delle opere conobber chi fosse l'artefice:
2 Fire, however, or wind, or the swift air, the sphere of the stars, impetuous water, heaven's lamps, arewhat they have held to be the gods who govern the world.	2 Ma dei, e rettori del mondo credettero essere o il fuoco, o il vento, o il mobil aere, o il coro delle stelle, o la massa delle acque, o il sole, o la luna.
3 If, charmed by their beauty, they have taken these for gods, let them know how much the Master ofthese excels them, since he was the very source of beauty that created them.	3 Che se rapiti dalla bellezza di tali cose ne fecero dei, comprender debbono quanto più bello di esse sia il loro Signore, mentre tutte queste cose dall'autore della bellezza furono fatte.
4 And if they have been impressed by their power and energy, let them deduce from these how muchmightier is he that has formed them,	4 Se poi la virtù ammirarono, e gli effetti delle medesime cose, da queste debbon intendere, che colui, il qual le creò, in virtù le sorpassa:
5 since through the grandeur and beauty of the creatures we may, by analogy, contemplate their Author.	5 Imperocché dalla grandezza, e bellezza della creatura potrà intelligibilmente vedersi il lor Creatore:
6 Small blame, however, attaches to them, for perhaps they go astray only in their search for God andtheir eagerness to find him;	6 Eppure meno è da dolersi di questi. Perocché errano forse in cercando Dio, e bramando di ritrovarlo.
7 familiar with his works, they investigate them and fal victim to appearances, seeing so much beauty.	7 Conciossiaché lui cercano, investigando le opere sue, e ne rimangono presi, perché buone sono le cose, che veggonsi.
8 But even so, they have no excuse:	8 Contuttociò neppur a questi si dee perdonare;
9 if they are capable of acquiring enough knowledge to be able to investigate the world, how have theybeen so slow to find its Master?	9 Imperocché se poteron saperne tanto da penetrare le cose del mondo, come mai il Signore di esso non iscopersero più agevolmente?
10 But wretched are they, with their hopes set on dead things, who have given the title of gods to humanartefacts, gold or silver, skilfully worked, figures of animals, or useless stone, carved by some hand long ago.	10 Ma sgraziatissimi sono, e la loro speranza hanno in cose morte coloro, che danno il nome di dei alle opere delle mani degli uomini, all'oro, all'argento lavorato con arte, e alle immagini di animali, o ad un vil sasso, opera di antica mano.
11 Take a woodcutter. He fel s a suitable tree, neatly strips off the bark al over and then with admirableskil works the wood into an object useful in daily life.	11 Come quando un legnaiuolo perito tronca una diritta pianta dal bosco, e con buon modo tutta ne rade la corteccia, e dell'arte sua ne forma un mobile atto a servire per le bisogne della vita,
12 The bits left over from his work he uses for cooking his food, then eats his fil .	12 E degli avanzi di tal lavoro ne fa uso per farsi da mangiare;
13 There is stil a good-for-nothing bit left over, a gnarled and knotted bil et: he takes it and whittles itwith the concentration of his leisure hours, he shapes it with the skill of experience, he gives it a human shape	13 E un pezzo di questi non buono a farne nulla, bischenco, e pieno di nodi, a tempo avanzato lo lavora diligente mente collo scalpello, e secondo le regole dell'arte sua gli da figura, e lo fa simile all'immagine di un uomo,
14 or perhaps he makes it into some vile animal, smears it with ochre, paints its surface red, coats overal its blemishes.	14 Ovver gli di somiglianzà ad alcuno animale; e lo liscia col minio, e gli da color rosso col belletto, e lo pulisce da tutte le sue macchie,
15 He next makes a worthy home for it, lets it into the wal , fixes it with an iron clamp.	15 E degna stanza a lui prepara, e lo colloca alla muraglia, dove lo assicura col ferro,
16 Thus he makes sure that it will not fal down -- being wel aware that it cannot help itself, since it isonly an image, and needs to be helped.	16 Affinchè non vada per terra, usando per esso tal diligenza, perché sa, ch'ei non può da se aitarsi, perché è un simolacro, ed ha bisogno di aiuto:
17 And yet, if he wishes to pray for his goods, for his marriage, for his children, he does not blush toharangue this lifeless thing -- for health, he invokes what is weak,	17 E a lui porge voti, e lo consulta intorno alle sue facoltà, e intorno a' figliuoli, e intorno ad un matrimonio; e non si vergogna di parlare con uno, che è senz'anima:
18 for life, he pleads with what is dead, for help, he goes begging to total inexperience, for a journey,what cannot even use its feet,	18 E da un invalido chiede con suppliche la sanità, e da un morto la vita, e in suo aiuto invoca un impotente:
19 for profit, an undertaking, and success in pursuing his craft, he asks skil from something whosehands have no skil whatever.	19 E per fare un viaggio si raccomanda a chi nop può muoversi, e per far degli acquisti, o qualche lavoro, e pel felice evento di qualsisia cosa, fa preghiere a chi non è buono a nulla.
