NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA CEI 2008
1 Yes, natural y stupid are all who are unaware of God, and who, from good things seen, have not beenable to discover Him-who-is, or, by studying the works, have not recognised the Artificer.	1 Davvero vani per natura tutti gli uomini che vivevano nell’ignoranza di Dio, e dai beni visibili non furono capaci di riconoscere colui che è, né, esaminandone le opere, riconobbero l’artefice.
2 Fire, however, or wind, or the swift air, the sphere of the stars, impetuous water, heaven's lamps, arewhat they have held to be the gods who govern the world.	2 Ma o il fuoco o il vento o l’aria veloce, la volta stellata o l’acqua impetuosa o le luci del cielo essi considerarono come dèi, reggitori del mondo.
3 If, charmed by their beauty, they have taken these for gods, let them know how much the Master ofthese excels them, since he was the very source of beauty that created them.	3 Se, affascinati dalla loro bellezza, li hanno presi per dèi, pensino quanto è superiore il loro sovrano, perché li ha creati colui che è principio e autore della bellezza.
4 And if they have been impressed by their power and energy, let them deduce from these how muchmightier is he that has formed them,	4 Se sono colpiti da stupore per la loro potenza ed energia, pensino da ciò quanto è più potente colui che li ha formati.
5 since through the grandeur and beauty of the creatures we may, by analogy, contemplate their Author.	5 Difatti dalla grandezza e bellezza delle creature per analogia si contempla il loro autore.
6 Small blame, however, attaches to them, for perhaps they go astray only in their search for God andtheir eagerness to find him;	6 Tuttavia per costoro leggero è il rimprovero, perché essi facilmente s’ingannano cercando Dio e volendolo trovare.
7 familiar with his works, they investigate them and fal victim to appearances, seeing so much beauty.	7 Vivendo in mezzo alle sue opere, ricercano con cura e si lasciano prendere dall’apparenza perché le cose viste sono belle.
8 But even so, they have no excuse:	8 Neppure costoro però sono scusabili,
9 if they are capable of acquiring enough knowledge to be able to investigate the world, how have theybeen so slow to find its Master?	9 perché, se sono riusciti a conoscere tanto da poter esplorare il mondo, come mai non ne hanno trovato più facilmente il sovrano?
10 But wretched are they, with their hopes set on dead things, who have given the title of gods to humanartefacts, gold or silver, skilfully worked, figures of animals, or useless stone, carved by some hand long ago.	10 Infelici anche coloro le cui speranze sono in cose morte e che chiamarono dèi le opere di mani d’uomo, oro e argento, lavorati con arte, e immagini di animali, oppure una pietra inutile, opera di mano antica.
11 Take a woodcutter. He fel s a suitable tree, neatly strips off the bark al over and then with admirableskil works the wood into an object useful in daily life.	11 Ecco un falegname: dopo aver segato un albero maneggevole, ha tagliato facilmente tutta la corteccia intorno e, avendolo lavorato abilmente, ha preparato un oggetto utile alle necessità della vita;
12 The bits left over from his work he uses for cooking his food, then eats his fil .	12 raccolti poi gli avanzi del suo lavoro, li consuma per prepararsi il cibo e saziarsi.
13 There is stil a good-for-nothing bit left over, a gnarled and knotted bil et: he takes it and whittles itwith the concentration of his leisure hours, he shapes it with the skill of experience, he gives it a human shape	13 Quanto avanza ancora, buono proprio a nulla, legno contorto e pieno di nodi, lo prende e lo scolpisce per occupare il tempo libero; con l’abilità dei momenti di riposo gli dà una forma, lo fa simile a un’immagine umana
14 or perhaps he makes it into some vile animal, smears it with ochre, paints its surface red, coats overal its blemishes.	14 oppure a quella di un animale spregevole. Lo vernicia con minio, ne colora di rosso la superficie e ricopre con la vernice ogni sua macchia;
15 He next makes a worthy home for it, lets it into the wal , fixes it with an iron clamp.	15 quindi, preparatagli una degna dimora, lo colloca sul muro, fissandolo con un chiodo.
16 Thus he makes sure that it will not fal down -- being wel aware that it cannot help itself, since it isonly an image, and needs to be helped.	16 Provvede perché non cada, ben sapendo che non è in grado di aiutarsi da sé; infatti è solo un’immagine e ha bisogno di aiuto.
17 And yet, if he wishes to pray for his goods, for his marriage, for his children, he does not blush toharangue this lifeless thing -- for health, he invokes what is weak,	17 Quando prega per i suoi beni, per le nozze e per i figli, non si vergogna di parlare a quell’oggetto inanimato, e per la sua salute invoca un essere debole,
18 for life, he pleads with what is dead, for help, he goes begging to total inexperience, for a journey,what cannot even use its feet,	18 per la sua vita prega una cosa morta, per un aiuto supplica un essere inetto, per il suo viaggio uno che non può usare i suoi piedi;
19 for profit, an undertaking, and success in pursuing his craft, he asks skil from something whosehands have no skil whatever.	19 per un guadagno, un lavoro e un successo negli affari, chiede abilità a uno che è il più inabile con le mani.
