NEW JERUSALEM	SAGRADA BIBLIA
1 Better a good name than costly oil, the day of death than the day of birth.	1 Boa fama vale mais que bom perfume; mais vale o dia da morte que o dia do nascimento.
2 Better go to the house of mourning than to the house of feasting; for to this end everyone comes, let theliving take this to heart.	2 Melhor é ir para a casa onde há luto que para a casa onde há banquete. Porque aí se vê aparecer o fim de todo homem e os vivos nele refletem.
3 Better sadness than laughter: a joyful heart may be concealed behind sad looks.	3 Tristeza vale mais que riso, porque a tristeza do semblante é boa para o coração.
4 The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning, the heart of fools in the house of gaiety.	4 O coração dos sábios está na casa do luto, o coração dos insensatos na casa da alegria.
5 Better attend to the reprimand of the wise than listen to a song sung by a fool.	5 É melhor ouvir a reprimenda de um sábio que a canção de um tolo,
6 For like the crackling of thorns under the cauldron is the laughter of fools: and that too is futile.	6 porque qual o crepitar dos espinhos na caldeira, tal é o riso do insensato. E isso é ainda vaidade.
7 But being oppressed drives a sage mad, and a present corrupts the heart.	7 A opressão torna um sábio insensato; os presentes corrompem o coração.
8 Better the end of a matter than its beginning, better patience than ambition.	8 Mais vale o fim de uma coisa que seu começo. Um espírito paciente vale mais que um espírito orgulhoso.
9 Do not be too easily exasperated, for exasperation dwel s in the heart of fools.	9 Não cedas prontamente ao espírito de irritação; é no coração dos insensatos que reside a irritação.
10 Do not ask why the past was better than the present, for this is not a question prompted by wisdom.	10 Não digas jamais: Como pode ser que os dias de outrora eram melhores que estes de agora? Porque não é a sabedoria que te inspira esta pergunta.
11 Wisdom is as good as a legacy, profitable to those who enjoy the light of the sun.	11 A sabedoria é tão boa como uma herança, e é de proveito aos que vêem o sol.
12 For as money protects, so does wisdom, and the advantage of knowledge is this: that wisdom bestowslife on those who possess her.	12 Pois está-se à sombra da sabedoria como se está à sombra do dinheiro: a utilidade do saber consiste em que a sabedoria dá vida ao que a possui.
13 Consider God's creation: who, for instance, can straighten what God has bent?	13 Considera a obra de Deus: quem poderá endireitar o que ele fez curvo?
14 When things are going wel , enjoy yourself, and when they are going badly, consider this: God hasdesigned the one no less than the other so that we should take nothing for granted.	14 No dia da felicidade, sê alegre; no dia da desgraça, pensa; porque Deus fez uma e outra, de tal modo que o homem não descubra o futuro.
15 In my futile life, I have seen everything: the upright person perishing in uprightness and the wickedperson surviving in wickedness.	15 No decurso de minha vã existência, vi tudo isso: há o justo que morre permanecendo justo e o ímpio que dura apesar de sua malícia.
16 Do not be upright to excess and do not make yourself unduly wise: why should you destroy yourself?	16 Não sejas justo excessivamente, nem sábio além da medida. Por que te tornarias estúpido?
17 Do not be wicked to excess, and do not be a fool: why die before your time?	17 Não sejas excessivamente mau, e não sejas insensato. Por que haverias de morrer antes de tua hora?
18 It is wise to hold on to one and not let go of the other, since the godfearing wil find both.	18 É bom que guardes isto, e que não negligencies aquilo: porque aquele que teme a Deus, realizará uma e outra coisa.
19 Wisdom makes the wise stronger than a dozen governors in a city.	19 A sabedoria dá ao sábio mais força que dez chefes de guerra reunidos numa cidade.
20 No one on earth is sufficiently upright to do good without ever sinning.	20 Não há homem justo sobre a terra que faça o bem sem jamais pecar.
21 Again, do not listen to all that people say, then you wil not hear your servant abusing you.	21 Não prestes atenção em todas as palavras que se dizem, para que não ouças dizer que teu servo fala mal de ti;
22 For often, as you very wel know, you have abused others.	22 porque teu coração bem sabe que tu mesmo, muitas vezes, falaste mal dos outros.
23 Thanks to wisdom, I have found all this to be true; I resolved to be wise, but this was beyond myreach!	23 Tudo isso eu perscrutei com sabedoria. Eu disse comigo mesmo: Eu quero ser sábio. Mas a sabedoria ficou longe de mim.
24 The past is out of reach, buried deep -- who can discover it?	24 Aquilo que acontece é longínquo, profundo, profundo: quem o poderá sondar?
25 But I have reached the point where, having learnt, explored and investigated wisdom and reflection, Irecognise evil as being a form of madness, and fol y as something stupid.	25 Eu me apliquei de todo o coração a perscrutar, a sondar a sabedoria e a razão das coisas, a reconhecer que a maldade é uma loucura e a falta de razão uma demência.
26 And I find woman more bitter than Death, she is a snare, her heart is a net, and her arms are chains.The man who is pleasing to God eludes her, but the sinner is captured by her.	26 Eu descobri que a mulher é coisa mais amarga que a morte, porque ela é um laço, e seu coração é uma rede, e suas mãos, cadeias. Aquele que é agradável a Deus lhe escapa, mas o pecador será preso por ela.
27 This is what I think, says Qoheleth, having examined one thing after another to draw some conclusion,	27 Eis o que encontrei, diz o Eclesiastes, procurando descobrir a razão de uma coisa depois de outra.
28 which I am still looking for, although unsuccessful y: one man in a thousand, I may find, but a womanbetter than other women-never.	28 Eis o que eu procuro continuamente sem descobrir: encontrei um homem entre mil, mas nenhuma mulher entre todas
29 This alone is my conclusion: God has created man straightforward, and human artifices are humaninventions.	29 Somente encontrei isto: Deus criou o homem reto, mas é ele que procura os extravios.
