NEW JERUSALEM	KÁLDI-NEOVULGÁTA
1 Better a good name than costly oil, the day of death than the day of birth.	1 Jobb a jó név az illatos olajnál, s a halál napja a születés napjánál.
2 Better go to the house of mourning than to the house of feasting; for to this end everyone comes, let theliving take this to heart.	2 Jobb a gyásznak házába menni, mint a lakoma házába térni, mert az minden embert a közös végre figyelmeztet, s az élő ott megszívleli a jövőt.
3 Better sadness than laughter: a joyful heart may be concealed behind sad looks.	3 Jobb a komorság a nevetésnél, mert az arc szomorúságától javul a bűnös lelke.
4 The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning, the heart of fools in the house of gaiety.	4 Ott a bölcsek szíve, ahol gyász van, a balgák szíve pedig ott, ahol öröm lakik.
5 Better attend to the reprimand of the wise than listen to a song sung by a fool.	5 Jobb a bölcsnek feddését hallani, mint a hízelgő balgák énekét hallgatni.
6 For like the crackling of thorns under the cauldron is the laughter of fools: and that too is futile.	6 Mert amilyen az égő tövis ropogása az edény alatt, olyan az oktalan kacagása! Ez is csak hiúság!
7 But being oppressed drives a sage mad, and a present corrupts the heart.	7 A zsarolás a bölcset balgává teszi, s az ajándék megrontja a szívet.
8 Better the end of a matter than its beginning, better patience than ambition.	8 »Jobb a dolog vége az elejénél, jobb a türelmes a kevélynél.«
9 Do not be too easily exasperated, for exasperation dwel s in the heart of fools.	9 Ne légy hirtelen a bosszúságra, mert a bosszúság a balgák keblében lakik.
10 Do not ask why the past was better than the present, for this is not a question prompted by wisdom.	10 Ne mondd: »Miért van az, hogy azelőtt jobb idők jártak, mint most?« Mert balga az ilyen kérdés!
11 Wisdom is as good as a legacy, profitable to those who enjoy the light of the sun.	11 Jobb a bölcsesség a vagyonnál, és nagyobb előny azoknak, akik a napot látják.
12 For as money protects, so does wisdom, and the advantage of knowledge is this: that wisdom bestowslife on those who possess her.	12 Mert amint megoltalmaz a bölcsesség, ugyanúgy megoltalmaz a pénz is; a tudomány és a bölcsesség mégis hasznosabb, mert életet ad a birtokosának.
13 Consider God's creation: who, for instance, can straighten what God has bent?	13 Szemléld Isten művét, hogy senki sem tudja egyenessé tenni, amit görbének alkotott!
14 When things are going wel , enjoy yourself, and when they are going badly, consider this: God hasdesigned the one no less than the other so that we should take nothing for granted.	14 A jólét napjain élvezd a jót, a balsors napján pedig gondold meg, hogy ezt is, mint azt, Isten alkotta, azért, hogy az embernek ne lehessen jogos panasza ellene.
15 In my futile life, I have seen everything: the upright person perishing in uprightness and the wickedperson surviving in wickedness.	15 Hívságos napjaim folyamán ezeket is láttam: Van igaz ember, aki igazvolta mellett is tönkremegy, és van bűnös, aki gonoszsága mellett is sokáig él.
16 Do not be upright to excess and do not make yourself unduly wise: why should you destroy yourself?	16 Ne akarj túlságosan igaz és a kelleténél bölcsebb lenni, hogy balgává ne légy!
17 Do not be wicked to excess, and do not be a fool: why die before your time?	17 Ne légy szerfelett gonosz, és ne légy ostoba, hogy meg ne halj időd előtt!
18 It is wise to hold on to one and not let go of the other, since the godfearing wil find both.	18 Jó, ha megőrzöd, amid van; de a többiről se vedd le kezedet, mert aki féli Istent, nem hanyagol el semmit.
19 Wisdom makes the wise stronger than a dozen governors in a city.	19 A bölcsesség több erőt ad a bölcsnek, mint a város tíz hatalmassága.
20 No one on earth is sufficiently upright to do good without ever sinning.	20 Mert nincs a földön igaz ember, aki jót tenne, és ne vétkeznék.
21 Again, do not listen to all that people say, then you wil not hear your servant abusing you.	21 Ne is ügyelj minden szóbeszédre, hogy meg ne halld, hogyan átkoz téged a szolgád,
22 For often, as you very wel know, you have abused others.	22 hiszen magadban jól tudod, hogy te is gyakran átkoztál másokat.
23 Thanks to wisdom, I have found all this to be true; I resolved to be wise, but this was beyond myreach!	23 Mindezt megtapasztaltam bölcsességben, s azt mondtam: »Bölcs akarok lenni!« De a bölcsesség messzire távozott tőlem,
24 The past is out of reach, buried deep -- who can discover it?	24 még messzebbre, mint azelőtt volt, mert igencsak mély az! Ki tudná megtalálni?
25 But I have reached the point where, having learnt, explored and investigated wisdom and reflection, Irecognise evil as being a form of madness, and fol y as something stupid.	25 Mindent megvizsgáltam elmémmel, hogy megismerjem, kikémleljem, hogy felkeressem a bölcsességet és a tudást, és hogy felismerjem a balga gonoszságát és a dőrék tévelygését.
26 And I find woman more bitter than Death, she is a snare, her heart is a net, and her arms are chains.The man who is pleasing to God eludes her, but the sinner is captured by her.	26 Úgy találtam, hogy még a halálnál is keserűbb az asszony, aki olyan, mint a vadász csapdája: háló a szíve, karjai bilincsek. Aki Isten előtt kedves, megmenekül tőle, a bűnös azonban beleakad.
27 This is what I think, says Qoheleth, having examined one thing after another to draw some conclusion,	27 Lám, ezt találtam, mondja a Prédikátor, amikor az egyik dolgot a másikkal összevetettem, hogy eljussak a tudáshoz,
28 which I am still looking for, although unsuccessful y: one man in a thousand, I may find, but a womanbetter than other women-never.	28 amelyet lelkem folyton keresett, de meg nem talált: Embert ezer között egyet találtam, de asszonyt ugyanannyi között egyet sem találtam!
29 This alone is my conclusion: God has created man straightforward, and human artifices are humaninventions.	29 Csak azt találtam, hogy Isten az embert igaznak alkotta, de az beleártotta magát mindenféle mesterkedésbe.
