NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 Better a good name than costly oil, the day of death than the day of birth.	1 Meglio un buon nome che un buon profumo e il giorno della morte che quello della nascita.
2 Better go to the house of mourning than to the house of feasting; for to this end everyone comes, let theliving take this to heart.	2 Meglio andare in una casa dove si fa cordoglio, che in una casa dove si fa baldoria, perché è questa la fine di tutti gli uomini e il vivo così ci riflette.
3 Better sadness than laughter: a joyful heart may be concealed behind sad looks.	3 Meglio la tristezza del riso, perché davanti a un volto triste il cuore si fa migliore.
4 The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning, the heart of fools in the house of gaiety.	4 Il pensiero del sapiente è rivolto alla casa in cordoglio, il pensiero dello stolto alla casa in allegria.
5 Better attend to the reprimand of the wise than listen to a song sung by a fool.	5 Meglio ascoltare il rimprovero del sapiente piuttosto che l'adulazione degli stolti,
6 For like the crackling of thorns under the cauldron is the laughter of fools: and that too is futile.	6 perché come lo scoppiettio degli sterpi sotto la pentola, così è il riso dello stolto. Ma anche questo è vanità,
7 But being oppressed drives a sage mad, and a present corrupts the heart.	7 perché l'oppressione può rendere stolto il sapiente, e un donativo può corrompere il cuore.
8 Better the end of a matter than its beginning, better patience than ambition.	8 Meglio la fine di una cosa che il suo inizio, meglio la longanimità che la superbia.
9 Do not be too easily exasperated, for exasperation dwel s in the heart of fools.	9 Non essere facile ad irritarti nell'intimo, perché l'irritazione ha sede nel seno degli stolti.
10 Do not ask why the past was better than the present, for this is not a question prompted by wisdom.	10 Non ti domandare com'è che il tempo passato è migliore di quello di oggi, perché questo problema non viene da saggezza.
11 Wisdom is as good as a legacy, profitable to those who enjoy the light of the sun.	11 E' bene avere oltre alla sapienza un patrimonio: è un vantaggio per quelli che vedono il sole,
12 For as money protects, so does wisdom, and the advantage of knowledge is this: that wisdom bestowslife on those who possess her.	12 perché si vive all'ombra della sapienza, si vive all'ombra del danaro; ma vale di più il sapere, perché la sapienza fa vivere chi la possiede.
13 Consider God's creation: who, for instance, can straighten what God has bent?	13 Cerca di capire l'opera di Dio, perché nessuno può raddrizzare ciò che egli ha fatto curvo.
14 When things are going wel , enjoy yourself, and when they are going badly, consider this: God hasdesigned the one no less than the other so that we should take nothing for granted.	14 Nei giorni felici sii lieto, nei giorni del dolore rifletti: gli uni come gli altri vengono per volere di Dio, perché l'uomo non possa sapere mai nulla del proprio futuro.
15 In my futile life, I have seen everything: the upright person perishing in uprightness and the wickedperson surviving in wickedness.	15 Tutto ho veduto nei giorni miei vani. C'è il giusto che perisce nonostante la sua giustizia, e l'empio che vive a lungo nonostante la sua malvagità.
16 Do not be upright to excess and do not make yourself unduly wise: why should you destroy yourself?	16 Cerca perciò di non essere né troppo giusto né troppo saggio, se non vuoi perire.
17 Do not be wicked to excess, and do not be a fool: why die before your time?	17 Ma non essere nemmeno troppo cattivo né troppo stolto, se non vuoi perire prima del tuo tempo.
18 It is wise to hold on to one and not let go of the other, since the godfearing wil find both.	18 E' bene che tu stia attaccato a una cosa, ma che tu non ti discosti nemmeno dall'altra. Quel che conta è che tu tema Dio, e riuscirai in entrambe le cose.
19 Wisdom makes the wise stronger than a dozen governors in a city.	19 La sapienza rappresenta per il saggio una forza maggiore di quella di dieci potenti in una città,
20 No one on earth is sufficiently upright to do good without ever sinning.	20 per quanto sulla terra non ci sia nessun uomo che sia giusto, che faccia il bene senza peccare.
21 Again, do not listen to all that people say, then you wil not hear your servant abusing you.	21 Inoltre, non prestare attenzione a tutte le parole che si dicono, perché non ti capiti di sentire il tuo servo parlar male di te,
22 For often, as you very wel know, you have abused others.	22 ché la tua coscienza sa che anche tu, molte volte, hai parlato male degli altri.
23 Thanks to wisdom, I have found all this to be true; I resolved to be wise, but this was beyond myreach!	23 Poiché è con la sapienza che avevo fatte tutte queste considerazioni, decisi di diventare sapiente, ma la sapienza era lontana da me.
24 The past is out of reach, buried deep -- who can discover it?	24 Lontano è il reale ed estremamente profondo. Nessuno ne verrà a capo.
25 But I have reached the point where, having learnt, explored and investigated wisdom and reflection, Irecognise evil as being a form of madness, and fol y as something stupid.	25 Allora mi detti a riflettere nel mio cuore per cercare la sapienza e l'interpretazione delle cose, facendo esperienza del male, dell'insipienza, della stoltezza e della follia.
26 And I find woman more bitter than Death, she is a snare, her heart is a net, and her arms are chains.The man who is pleasing to God eludes her, but the sinner is captured by her.	26 E questo ho trovato, che la donna è più amara della morte, perché essa è un laccio, il suo cuore è una rete e catene le sue braccia. Chi è gradito a Dio ne può scampare, ma il peccatore ci resta preso.
27 This is what I think, says Qoheleth, having examined one thing after another to draw some conclusion,	27 Ecco, questo è ciò che ho trovato, ha detto Qohèlet, nel cercare la ragione di tutto, cosa per cosa:
28 which I am still looking for, although unsuccessful y: one man in a thousand, I may find, but a womanbetter than other women-never.	28 aquello che cerco, non l'ho trovato.
29 This alone is my conclusion: God has created man straightforward, and human artifices are humaninventions.	29 Ma questo l'ho trovato: Dio ha fatto l'uomo semplice; è lui che va in cerca di tanti e tanti perché.
