1 Then again, I contemplate al the oppression that is committed under the sun. Take for instance thetears of the oppressed. No one to comfort them! The power their oppressors wield. No one to comfort them!	1 - E mi rivolsi ad altro, e vidi tutte le oppressioni che si commettono sotto il sole: le lacrime degl'innocenti [oppressi], e nessun consolatore!l'impotenza a resistere alle violenze degli oppressori, e nessuno che gli aiuti [e conforti]!
2 So, rather than the living who stil have lives to live, I congratulate the dead who have already metdeath;	2 E proclamai i morti più beati de' vivi,
3 happier than both of these are those who are yet unborn and have not seen the evil things that are doneunder the sun.	3 e più felici d'entrambi chi non è nato ancora, nè ha visto il male che si fa sotto il sole!
4 I see that al effort and all achievement spring from mutual jealousy. This too is futility and chasing afterthe wind.	4 Osservai poi tutte le fatiche degli uomini, e m'accòrsi che l'industria dell'uno è esposta all'invidia dell'altro. Anche in ciò è vanità e inutile affanno!
5 The fool folds his arms and eats his own flesh away.	5 Lo stolto [invece] incrocia le manie consuma le proprie carni.
6 Better one hand full of repose than two hands ful of achievements to chase after the wind.	6 Meglio un pugno [di roba] con pace, che le due mani piene con travaglio e afflizione di spirito!
7 And something else futile I observe under the sun:	7 Considerando [ancora], vidi un'altra vanità sotto il sole.
8 a person is quite alone -- no child, no brother; and yet there is no end to his efforts, his eyes can neverhave their fil of riches. For whom, then, do I work so hard and grudge myself pleasure? This too is futile, a sorry business.	8 Ecco uno ch'è solo, e non ha altri dopo di sè, nè figliuolo nè fratello. Eppure, non la smette di affaticarsi, nè i suoi occhi si sazian di ricchezze. Non pensa a dire: «Per chi travaglio ioe privo del benessere l'anima mia?». Anche in questo è vanità e tristissima afflizione!
9 Better two than one alone, since thus their work is real y rewarding.	9 Meglio esser due insieme che uno solo, perchè han profitto dalla loro unione [ne' travagli].
10 If one should fal , the other helps him up; but what of the person with no one to help him up when hefal s?	10 Se uno cade, lo sostiene [e lo rialza] l'altro. Ma guai a chi è solo, perchè, cadendo, non ha chi lo sollevi!
11 Again: if two sleep together they keep warm, but how can anyone keep warm alone?	11 Se due uomini dormono insieme, si riscaldan l'un l'altro; ma un solo come si riscalderà?
12 Where one alone would be overcome, two wil put up resistance; and a threefold cord is not quicklybroken.	12 E se altri soverchia l'uno, in due gli terranno testa: una fune a tre fila difficilmente si rompe.
13 Better a youngster poor and wise than a monarch old and sil y who wil no longer take advice-	13 Meglio un giovane povero e saggio, che un re vecchio e stolto, che non sa provveder per il futuro,
14 even though stepping from prison to the throne, even though born a beggar in that kingdom.	14 perchè anche dalla prigione e da' ceppi uno può talora uscir fuori a regnare, e altri [invece], nato re, finir nella miseria.
15 I observe that al who live and move under the sun support the young newcomer who takes over.	15 Vidi tutti gli uomini andarsene alla luce del solecol giovane successore che prendeva il posto dell'altro.
16 He takes his place at the head of innumerable subjects; but his successors wil not think the morekindly of him for that. This too is futile and chasing after the wind.	16 Infinita la gente che sfilava al suo cospetto; ma quei che verran dopo, non si rallegreranno di lui! Anche questo è vanità e afflizione di spirito!
17 Watch your step when you go to the House of God: drawing near to listen is better than the offering ofa sacrifice by fools, though they do not know that they are doing wrong.	17 Bada ai tuoi passi nell'avviarti alla casa di Dio, e accostati per ascoltare [la sua voce]; perchè molto migliore è l'obbedienza che le vittime degli stolti, i quali non avvertono il male che fanno.
