1 Then again, I contemplate al the oppression that is committed under the sun. Take for instance thetears of the oppressed. No one to comfort them! The power their oppressors wield. No one to comfort them!	1 Mi rivolsi ad altre cose, e osservai le prepotenze, che si fanno sotto del sole, e le lagrime degli innocenti, e nessuno, che li consoli; e come resistere non possono all'altrui violenza, privi di chi lor rechi soccorso.
2 So, rather than the living who stil have lives to live, I congratulate the dead who have already metdeath;	2 E i morti preferii a quelli che vivono.
3 happier than both of these are those who are yet unborn and have not seen the evil things that are doneunder the sun.	3 E più felice degli altri giudicai esser colui, che non è ancor nato, e non ha veduti i mali, che si fanno sotto del sole.
4 I see that al effort and all achievement spring from mutual jealousy. This too is futility and chasing afterthe wind.	4 Contemplai eziandio tutti i travagli degli uomini e osservai l'industria essere esposta all'invidia del prossimo; e perciò anche in questo è vanità, e cura inutile.
5 The fool folds his arms and eats his own flesh away.	5 Lo stolto stropiccia una mano coll'altra, e mangia le proprie carni, e dice:
6 Better one hand full of repose than two hands ful of achievements to chase after the wind.	6 Val più una pugnata di roba con pace, che l'aver piene ambedue le mani, con travaglio, e afflizione di spirito.
7 And something else futile I observe under the sun:	7 Considerai, e vidi sotto del sole un'altra vanità:
8 a person is quite alone -- no child, no brother; and yet there is no end to his efforts, his eyes can neverhave their fil of riches. For whom, then, do I work so hard and grudge myself pleasure? This too is futile, a sorry business.	8 V'ha un uomo che è solo, e non ha alcuno dopo di se, né figliuolo, né fratello, e con tutto ciò non rifina di lavorare: i suoi occhi non si saziano di ricchezze, e non pensa giammai, né dice: per chi mi affanno, e privo l'anima mia dell'uso de beni? In questo ancora è vanità, e afflizione stranissima.
9 Better two than one alone, since thus their work is real y rewarding.	9 E adunque meglio esser due insieme, che esser solo; perocché trovano vantaggio nella loro serietà.
10 If one should fal , the other helps him up; but what of the person with no one to help him up when hefal s?	10 Se uno cade, l'altro il sostiene. Guai a chi è solo, perché caduto ch'ei sia, non ha chi lo rialzi.
11 Again: if two sleep together they keep warm, but how can anyone keep warm alone?	11 E se dormono due insieme si riscalderanno l'un l'altro. Un solo come farà a riscaldarsi?
12 Where one alone would be overcome, two wil put up resistance; and a threefold cord is not quicklybroken.	12 E se alcuno soverchia l'uno, i due gli fanno testa: una cordicella a tre fila si rompe difficilmente.
13 Better a youngster poor and wise than a monarch old and sil y who wil no longer take advice-	13 È più stimabile un fanciullo povero, ma saggio, che un re vecchio, e stolto, il quale non sa prevedere il futuro.
14 even though stepping from prison to the throne, even though born a beggar in that kingdom.	14 Perocché qualche volta dalla carcere, e dalle catene passa taluno al regno, e un altro, che nacque re, va a finire nella miseria.
15 I observe that al who live and move under the sun support the young newcomer who takes over.	15 Vidi tutti i viventi, che camminano sotto del sole, seguire il giovinetto, che succederà dopo del padre.
16 He takes his place at the head of innumerable subjects; but his successors wil not think the morekindly of him for that. This too is futile and chasing after the wind.	16 Infinito è il numero di tutta la gente, che andavano innanzi a lui, e quelli, ancora, che poi verranno, non saran contenti di questo. Or anche in questo è vanità, e afflizione di spirito.
17 Watch your step when you go to the House of God: drawing near to listen is better than the offering ofa sacrifice by fools, though they do not know that they are doing wrong.	17 In entrando nella casa di Dio rifletti a' tuoi passi, e accostati per ascoltare; perocché molto migliore è l'obbedienza, che le vittime degli stolti, i quali non conoscono il male, che fanno.
