Proverbs 25

1 Here are some more of Solomon's proverbs, transcribed at the court of Hezekiah king of Judah:	1 Anche questi proverbi sono di Salomone, e furon messi insieme dagli uomini di Ezechia re di Giuda.
2 To conceal a matter, this is the glory of God, to sift it thoroughly, the glory of kings.	2 E' gloria di Dio tenere nascosta la parola, è gloria del re saperne investigare il senso.
3 The heavens for height and the earth for depth, unfathomable, as are the hearts of kings.	3 L'altezza del cielo, la profondità della terra, e il cuore dei re sono impenetrabili.
4 From silver remove the dross and it emerges wholly purified;	4 Togli all'argento le scorie, e ne verrà un vaso purissimo.
5 from the king's presence remove the wicked and on uprightness his throne is founded.	5 Togli gli empi dal cospetto del re, e il suo trono si stabilirà sopra la giustizia.
6 In the presence of the king do not give yourself airs, do not take a place among the great;	6 Non ti dare importanza dinanzi al re, non ti mettere nel posto dei grandi.
7 better to be invited, 'Come up here', than be humiliated in the presence of the prince.	7 E'meglio infatti che ti sia dotto: « Sali quassù » che esser umiliato dinanzi al principe.
8 What your eyes have witnessed do not produce too quickly at the trial, for what are you to do at theend should your neighbour confute you?	8 Quello che i tuoi occhi hanno visto non lo dir subito nel litigio, perchè poi non potrai riparare il torto, quando avrai disonorato l'amico.
9 Have the quarrel out with your neighbour. but do not disclose another's secret,	9 Tratta il tuo affare col tuo amico, e non rivelare il tuo segreto a uno straniero;
10 for fear your listener put you to shame, and the loss of repute be irremediable.	10 affinchè egli non t'insulti quando l'avrà saputo, e non cessi di svergognarti. Il favore e l'amicizia liberano; conservali per non esser disprezzato.
11 Like apples of gold inlaid with silver is a word that is aptly spoken.	11 Pomi d'oro in legature d'argento sono le parole dette a tempo.
12 A golden ring, an ornament of finest gold, is a wise rebuke to an attentive ear.	12 Orecchino d'oro con brillante è saggia ammonizione a docile orecchio.
13 The coolness of snow in harvest time, such is a trustworthy messenger to those who send him: herevives the soul of his master.	13 Come il fresco della neve al tempo della messe, così l'ambasciatore fedele è per colui che l'ha inviato: egli fa riposare l'anima di lui.
14 Clouds and wind, but no rain: such is anyone whose promises are princely but never kept.	14 Nubi e vento senza punta pioggia, tal è il millantatore che non adempie le promesse.
15 With patience a judge may be cajoled: a soft tongue breaks bones.	15 Colla pazienza si potrà lenire il principe, e la parola blanda toglierà le durezze.
16 Eat to your satisfaction what honey you may find, but not to excess or you wil bring it up again.	16 Hai trovato del miele? Mangiane quanto ti basti, chè, empiendotene, tu non l'abbia a vomitare.
17 Do not set foot too often in your neighbour's house, for fear the neighbour tire of you and come tohate you.	17 Ritira il piede dalla casa del tuo vicino, affinchè egli, stufo di te, non ti pigli a noia.
18 A mace, a sword, a piercing arrow, such is anyone who bears false witness against a companion.	18 Dardo, spada, acuta saetta è l'uomo che attesta il falso contro il suo prossimo.
19 Decaying tooth, lame foot, such is the fickle when trusted in time of trouble:	19 Dente cariato, piede slogato è chi spera nell'infedele nel giorno della sventura.
20 as well take off your coat in bitter weather. You are pouring vinegar on a wound when you sing songsto a sorrowing heart.	20 Perde il mantello nel giorno del freddo, mette l'aceto nel nitro chi canta canzoni a cuore afflitto. Come la tignola alla veste e il tarlo al legno, così la tristezza nuoce al cuore dell'uomo.
21 If your enemy is hungry, give him something to eat; if thirsty, something to drink.	21 Se il tuo nemico ha fame, dàgli da mangiare, se ha sete, dàgli da bere.
22 By this you will be heaping red-hot coals on his head, and Yahweh wil reward you.	22 Così ammucchierai sul suo capo ardenti carboni e il Signore ti ricompenserà.
23 The north wind begets the rain, and a backbiting tongue, black looks.	23 Il tramontano caccia la pioggia, e la faccia severa la lingua del detrattore.
24 Better the corner of a roof to live on than a house shared with a quarrelsome woman.	24 Meglio dimorare in un angolo del tetto, che in una comoda casa con donna litigiosa.
25 Cold water to a thirsty throat; such is good news from a distant land.	25 Acqua fresca al trafelato è buona notizia da paese lontano.
26 A churned -- up spring, a fountain fouled; such is the upright person trembling before the wicked.	26 Fonte intorbidata coi piedi e sorgente inquinata è il giusto che cade davanti all'empio.
27 It is not good to eat too much honey, nor to seek for glory on top of glory.	27 Come a chi mangia troppo miele non gli sa buono, così chi scruta la maestà sarà oppresso dalla gloria.
28 An open town, and without defences: such is anyone who lacks self-control.	28 Città aperta e senza mura è l'uomo che non sa frenare il suo spirito nel parlare.
