Proverbs 25

NEW JERUSALEM	JERUSALEM
1 Here are some more of Solomon's proverbs, transcribed at the court of Hezekiah king of Judah:	1 Voici encore des proverbes de Salomon, que transcrivirent les gens d'Ezéchias, roi de Juda.
2 To conceal a matter, this is the glory of God, to sift it thoroughly, the glory of kings.	2 C'est la gloire de Dieu de celer une chose, c'est la gloire des rois de la scruter.
3 The heavens for height and the earth for depth, unfathomable, as are the hearts of kings.	3 Les cieux, par leur hauteur, la terre, par sa profondeur, et le coeur des rois sont insondables.
4 From silver remove the dross and it emerges wholly purified;	4 Ote de l'argent les scories, il en sortira totalement purifié;
5 from the king's presence remove the wicked and on uprightness his throne is founded.	5 ôte le méchant de la présence du roi, et sur la justice s'affermira son trône.
6 In the presence of the king do not give yourself airs, do not take a place among the great;	6 En face du roi, ne prends pas de grands airs, ne te mets à la place des grands;
7 better to be invited, 'Come up here', than be humiliated in the presence of the prince.	7 car mieux vaut qu'on te dise: "Monte ici!" que d'être abaissé en présence du prince. Ce que tesyeux ont vu,
8 What your eyes have witnessed do not produce too quickly at the trial, for what are you to do at theend should your neighbour confute you?	8 ne le produis pas trop vite au procès, car que feras-tu à la fin si ton prochain te confond?
9 Have the quarrel out with your neighbour. but do not disclose another's secret,	9 Avec ton prochain vide ta querelle, mais sans révéler le secret d'autrui,
10 for fear your listener put you to shame, and the loss of repute be irremediable.	10 de crainte que celui qui entend ne te bafoue et que ta diffamation soit sans retour.
11 Like apples of gold inlaid with silver is a word that is aptly spoken.	11 Des pommes d'or avec des ciselures d'argent, telle est une parole dite à propos.
12 A golden ring, an ornament of finest gold, is a wise rebuke to an attentive ear.	12 Un anneau d'or, un joyau d'or fin, telle une sage réprimande à l'oreille attentive.
13 The coolness of snow in harvest time, such is a trustworthy messenger to those who send him: herevives the soul of his master.	13 La fraîcheur de la neige au jour de la moisson, tel est un messager fidèle: il réconforte l'âme deson maître.
14 Clouds and wind, but no rain: such is anyone whose promises are princely but never kept.	14 Nuages et vent, mais point de pluie! tel est l'homme qui promet royalement, mais ne tient pas.
15 With patience a judge may be cajoled: a soft tongue breaks bones.	15 Par la patience un juge se laisse fléchir, la langue douce broie les os.
16 Eat to your satisfaction what honey you may find, but not to excess or you wil bring it up again.	16 As-tu trouvé du miel? Manges-en à ta faim; garde-toi de t'en gorger, tu le vomirais.
17 Do not set foot too often in your neighbour's house, for fear the neighbour tire of you and come tohate you.	17 Dans la maison du prochain, fais-toi rare, de crainte que, fatigué de toi, il ne te prenne engrippe.
18 A mace, a sword, a piercing arrow, such is anyone who bears false witness against a companion.	18 Une massue, une épée, une flèche aiguë: tel est l'homme qui porte un faux témoignage contreson prochain.
19 Decaying tooth, lame foot, such is the fickle when trusted in time of trouble:	19 Dent gâtée, pied boiteux: le traître en qui l'on se confie au jour du malheur,
20 as well take off your coat in bitter weather. You are pouring vinegar on a wound when you sing songsto a sorrowing heart.	20 autant ôter son manteau par un temps glacial. C'est mettre du vinaigre sur du nitre que dechanter des chansons à un coeur affligé.
21 If your enemy is hungry, give him something to eat; if thirsty, something to drink.	21 Si ton ennemi a faim, donne-lui à manger, s'il a soif, donne-lui à boire,
22 By this you will be heaping red-hot coals on his head, and Yahweh wil reward you.	22 c'est amasser des charbons sur sa tête et Yahvé te le revaudra.
23 The north wind begets the rain, and a backbiting tongue, black looks.	23 L'aquilon engendre la pluie, la langue dissimulatrice un visage irrité.
24 Better the corner of a roof to live on than a house shared with a quarrelsome woman.	24 Mieux vaut habiter à l'angle d'un toit que faire maison commune avec une femme querelleuse.
25 Cold water to a thirsty throat; such is good news from a distant land.	25 De l'eau fraîche pour une gorge altérée: telle est une bonne nouvelle venant d'un pays lointain.
26 A churned -- up spring, a fountain fouled; such is the upright person trembling before the wicked.	26 Fontaine piétinée, source souillée: tel est un juste tremblant devant un méchant.
27 It is not good to eat too much honey, nor to seek for glory on top of glory.	27 Il n'est pas bon de manger trop de miel, ni de rechercher gloire sur gloire.
28 An open town, and without defences: such is anyone who lacks self-control.	28 Ville ouverte, sans remparts: tel un homme qui ne se possède pas.
