Proverbs 25

NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 Here are some more of Solomon's proverbs, transcribed at the court of Hezekiah king of Judah:	1 Anche questi sono proverbi di Salomone, che hanno trascritto gli uomini di Ezechia, re di Giuda.
2 To conceal a matter, this is the glory of God, to sift it thoroughly, the glory of kings.	2 E' gloria per Dio nascondere una cosa, ma è gloria per i re penetrarla.
3 The heavens for height and the earth for depth, unfathomable, as are the hearts of kings.	3 I cieli sono in alto, la terra in basso e il cuore dei re sono impenetrabili.
4 From silver remove the dross and it emerges wholly purified;	4 Togli le scorie dall'argento e ne uscirà un vaso per mezzo dell'orefice;
5 from the king's presence remove the wicked and on uprightness his throne is founded.	5 togli l'empio dalla faccia del sovrano e nella giustizia si consolida il suo trono.
6 In the presence of the king do not give yourself airs, do not take a place among the great;	6 Non ti gloriare davanti al re e al posto coi grandi non ti mettere;
7 better to be invited, 'Come up here', than be humiliated in the presence of the prince.	7 perché è meglio ti si dica: "Sali qua!" che essere abbassato davanti al principe.
8 What your eyes have witnessed do not produce too quickly at the trial, for what are you to do at theend should your neighbour confute you?	8 Ciò che i tuoi occhi han visto non mostrarlo troppo in fretta nel processo; cosa farai infatti alla fine quando il tuo avversario ti avrà smentito?
9 Have the quarrel out with your neighbour. but do not disclose another's secret,	9 Risolvi la tua lite col tuo prossimo, ma senza rivelare ad altri il segreto,
10 for fear your listener put you to shame, and the loss of repute be irremediable.	10 perché, sapendolo, non ti vituperi e tu ci perda la reputazione.
11 Like apples of gold inlaid with silver is a word that is aptly spoken.	11 Pomi d'oro con intarsi d'argento è una parola detta al tempo giusto;
12 A golden ring, an ornament of finest gold, is a wise rebuke to an attentive ear.	12 un anello d'oro o una collana d'oro fino è il rimprovero del saggio per un orecchio attento.
13 The coolness of snow in harvest time, such is a trustworthy messenger to those who send him: herevives the soul of his master.	13 Come il fresco della neve al tempo della messe è un messaggero fedele per chi l'ha inviato; egli ravviva l'anima del suo signore.
14 Clouds and wind, but no rain: such is anyone whose promises are princely but never kept.	14 Nuvole e vento e niente pioggia: tal è chi promette un regalo e non lo fa.
15 With patience a judge may be cajoled: a soft tongue breaks bones.	15 Con la pazienza si placa un principe e una lingua delicata spezza le ossa.
16 Eat to your satisfaction what honey you may find, but not to excess or you wil bring it up again.	16 Hai trovato il miele: mangiane il necessario; perché tu non ti impinzi e debba vomitarlo.
17 Do not set foot too often in your neighbour's house, for fear the neighbour tire of you and come tohate you.	17 Trattieni il piede dalla casa del tuo prossimo, ché non si stufi di te e ti disprezzi.
18 A mace, a sword, a piercing arrow, such is anyone who bears false witness against a companion.	18 Mazza, spada, freccia appuntita: l'uomo che testimonia il falso contro il prossimo.
19 Decaying tooth, lame foot, such is the fickle when trusted in time of trouble:	19 Dente cariato e piede sciancato è il traditore nel giorno dell'angustia,
20 as well take off your coat in bitter weather. You are pouring vinegar on a wound when you sing songsto a sorrowing heart.	20 chi toglie il mantello in un giorno di freddo. Aceto in una piaga è cantare canzoni a un cuore afflitto.
21 If your enemy is hungry, give him something to eat; if thirsty, something to drink.	21 Se il tuo nemico ha fame, dagli da mangiare e se ha sete, dagli da bere;
22 By this you will be heaping red-hot coals on his head, and Yahweh wil reward you.	22 così tu ammassi carboni ardenti sul suo capo e il Signore ti ricompenserà.
23 The north wind begets the rain, and a backbiting tongue, black looks.	23 La tramontana genera la pioggia, la faccia irritata una lingua indiscreta.
24 Better the corner of a roof to live on than a house shared with a quarrelsome woman.	24 E' meglio abitare sotto l'angolo di un tetto che con una donna litigiosa in una stessa casa.
25 Cold water to a thirsty throat; such is good news from a distant land.	25 Acqua fresca per una gola assetata: una buona notizia da una terra lontana.
26 A churned -- up spring, a fountain fouled; such is the upright person trembling before the wicked.	26 Una sorgente torbida e una fontana inquinata è il giusto che tentenna davanti all'empio.
27 It is not good to eat too much honey, nor to seek for glory on top of glory.	27 Mangiare troppo miele non è bene; risparmia dunque parole lusinghiere.
28 An open town, and without defences: such is anyone who lacks self-control.	28 Una città aperta senza mura: l'uomo che non sa dominare il proprio spirito.
