NEW JERUSALEMNOVA VULGATA
Elisha had said to the woman whose son he had raised to life, 'Move away with your family, and livewhere you can in some foreign country, for Yahweh has cal ed up a famine -- it is already coming on the country-- for seven years.'1 Eliseus autem locutus est ad mulierem, cuius vivere fecerat fi lium, dicens: “ Surge, vade tu et domus tua et peregrinare ubicumque reppereris; vocavit enim Dominus famem, et veniet super terram septem annis ”.
The woman hurried to do what the man of God had told her: she set out, she and her family, and forseven years she lived in Philistine territory.2 Quae surrexit et fecit iuxta verbum hominis Dei et vadens cum domo sua peregrinata est in terra Philisthim septem annis.
When the seven years were over, the woman returned from Philistine territory and went to lodge a claimwith the king for her house and land.3 Cumque finiti essent anni septem, reversa est mulier de terra Philisthim; et egressa est, ut interpellaret regem pro domo sua et agris suis.
Now the king was talking to Gehazi, the servant of the man of God. 'Tel me', he was saying, 'al aboutthe marvels which Elisha did.'4 Rex autem loquebatur cum Giezi puero viri Dei dicens: “ Narra mihi omnia magnalia, quae fecit Eliseus ”.
Gehazi was just tel ing the king how Elisha had raised the dead child to life, when the woman whose sonElisha had raised lodged her claim with the king for her house and land. 'My lord king,' Gehazi said, 'this is thevery woman, and that is her son whom Elisha raised to life.'5 Cumque ille narraret regi quomodo mortuum suscitasset, apparuit mulier, cuius vivificaverat filium, clamans ad regem pro domo sua et pro agris suis. Dixitque Giezi: “ Domine mi rex, haec est mulier, et hic filius eius, quem suscitavit Eliseus ”.
The king questioned the woman, who told him the story. The king then delegated one of the officials toher with this order, 'See that al her property is restored to her, and al the revenue from her land from the dayshe left the country until now.'6 Et interrogavit rex mulierem, quae narravit ei. Deditque ei rex eunuchum unum dicens: “ Restitue ei omnia, quae sua sunt, et universos reditus agrorum a die, qua reliquit terram usque ad praesens ”.
Elisha went to Damascus. Ben-Hadad king of Aram was il , and was told, 'The man of God has come althe way to us.'7 Venit quoque Eliseus Damascum, et Benadad rex Syriae aegrotabat. Nuntiaveruntque ei dicentes: “ Venit vir Dei huc ”.
Then the king said to Hazael, 'Take a present with you and go and meet the man of God; consultYahweh through him, and find out if I shal recover from my il ness.'8 Et ait rex ad Hazael: “ Tolle tecum munera et vade in occursum viri Dei et consule Dominum per eum dicens: Si evadere potero de infirmitate mea hac? ”.
So Hazael went to meet Elisha, taking with him as a present the best that Damascus could offer, a loadfor forty camels. He arrived and, presenting himself, said, 'Your son Ben-Hadad king of Aram has sent me to askyou, "Shall I recover from my illness?" '9 Ivit igitur Hazael in occursum eius habens secum munera et omnia bona Damasci, onera quadraginta camelorum. Cumque stetisset coram eo, ait: “ Filius tuus Benadad rex Syriae misit me ad te dicens: “Si sanari potero de infirmitate mea hac?” ”.
Elisha replied, 'Go and tell him, "You might recover," though Yahweh has shown me that he wilcertainly die.'10 Dixitque ei Eliseus: “ Vade, dic ei: Sanaberis. Porro ostendit mihi Dominus quia morte morietur ”.
Then the face of the man of God went rigid, and his look grew strangely fixed, and he wept.11 Stetitque facies eius, et conturbatus est usque ad suffusionem vultus flevitque vir Dei.
'Why', Hazael asked, 'does my lord weep?' 'Because I know', Elisha replied, 'what harm you wil do tothe Israelites: you wil burn down their fortresses, put their picked warriors to the sword, dash their little childrento pieces, disembowel their pregnant women.'12 Cui Hazael ait: “ Quare dominus meus flet? ”. At ille respondit: “ Quia scio, quae facturus sis filiis Israel mala: civitates eorum munitas igne succendes et iuvenes eorum interficies gladio et parvulos eorum elides et praegnantes discindes ”.
'But what is your servant?' Hazael said. 'How could this dog achieve anything so great?' 'In a visionfrom Yahweh,' Elisha replied, 'I have seen you king of Aram.'13 Dixitque Hazael: “ Quid enim sum servus tuus canis, ut faciam rem istam magnam? ”. Et ait Eliseus: “ Ostendit mihi Dominus te regem Syriae fore ”.
Leaving Elisha, Hazael went back to his master who asked, 'What did Elisha say to you?' He replied,'He told me that you might recover.'14 Qui cum recessisset ab Eliseo, venit ad dominum suum. Qui ait ei: “ Quid tibi dixit Eliseus? ”. At ille respondit: “ Dixit mihi: Recipies sanitatem ”.
Next day he took a blanket, soaked it in water, and spread it over his face. So died Ben-Hadad, andHazael succeeded him.15 Cumque venisset dies altera, tulit stragulum et intinxit aqua et expandit super faciem eius, et mortuus est; regnavitque Hazael pro eo.
In the fifth year of Jehoram son of Ahab, king of Israel, Jehoram son of Jehoshaphat became king ofJudah.16 Anno quinto Ioram filii Achab regis Israel — Iosaphat autem erat rex Iudae — regnavit Ioram filius Iosaphat regis Iudae.
He was thirty-two years old when he came to the throne, and he reigned for eight years in Jerusalem.17 Triginta duorum erat annorum, cum regnare coepisset, et octo annis regnavit in Ierusalem.
He followed the example of the kings of Israel as the House of Ahab were doing; he had married one ofAhab's daughters; and he did what is displeasing to Yahweh.18 Ambulavitque in viis regum Israel, sicut ambulaverat domus Achab; filia enim Achab erat uxor eius. Et fecit, quod malum est coram Domino.
But Yahweh was unwil ing to destroy Judah, because of his servant David, and was faithful to thepromise which he had made him to leave him a lamp for ever in his presence.19 Noluit autem Dominus disperdere Iudam propter David servum suum, sicut promiserat ei, ut daret illi lucernam et filiis eius cunctis diebus.
In his time Edom threw off the domination of Judah and set up a king for itself.20 In diebus eius recessit Edom, ne esset sub Iuda, et constituit sibi regem.
Jehoram crossed to Zair, and with him al the chariots . . . Under cover of dark, he and his chariotcommanders broke through the Edomites surrounding him; the people fled to their tents.21 Venitque Ioram Seira et omnis currus cum eo; et surrexit nocte percussitque Idumaeos, qui eum circumdederant, et principes curruum; et populus fugit in tabernacula sua.
Even so, Edom threw off the domination of Judah, remaining free to the present day. Libnah alsorevolted at that time.22 Recessit ergo Edom, ne esset sub Iuda, usque ad diem hanc. Tunc recessit et Lobna in tempore illo.
The rest of the history of Jehoram, his entire career, is this not recorded in the Book of the Annals ofthe Kings of Judah?23 Reliqua autem gestorum Ioram et universa, quae fecit, nonne haec scripta sunt in libro annalium regum Iudae?
Then Jehoram fel asleep with his ancestors and was buried with them in the City of David; his sonAhaziah succeeded him.24 Et dormivit Ioram cum patribus suis sepultusque est cum eis in civitate David; et regnavit Ochozias filius eius pro eo.
In the twelfth year of Jehoram son of Ahab, king of Israel, Ahaziah son of Jehoram, king of Judah, became king.25 Anno duodecimo Ioram filii Achab regis Israel regnavit Ochozias filius Ioram regis Iudae.
Ahaziah was twenty-two years old when he came to the throne, and he reigned for one year inJerusalem. His mother's name was Athaliah granddaughter of Omri king of Israel.26 Viginti duorum annorum erat Ochozias, cum regnare coepisset, et uno anno regnavit in Ierusalem. Nomen matris eius Athalia filia Amri regis Israel.
He followed the example of the House of Ahab and did what is displeasing to Yahweh, as the House ofAhab were doing, to whom he was related by marriage.27 Et ambulavit in viis domus Achab et fecit, quod malum est coram Domino, sicut domus Achab; gener enim domus Achab fuit.
He went with Jehoram son of Ahab to make war on Hazael king of Aram at Ramoth in Gilead, but theAramaeans wounded Jehoram.28 Abiit quoque cum Ioram filio Achab ad proeliandum contra Hazael regem Syriae in Ramoth Galaad; et vulneraverunt Syri Ioram.
King Jehoram returned to Jezreel to recover from the wounds which he had received at Ramah, fighting against Hazael king of Aram. Ahaziah son of Jehoram, king of Judah, went down to Jezreel to visitJehoram son of Ahab because he was ailing.29 Qui reversus est, ut curaretur in Iezrahel de vulneribus, quibus vulneraverant eum Syri in Rama proeliantem contra Hazael regem Syriae. Porro Ochozias filius Ioram rex Iudae descendit invisere Ioram filium Achab in Iezrahel, quia aegrotabat.
