NEW JERUSALEMNOVA VULGATA
There was a lul of three years, with no fighting between Aram and Israel.1 Transierunt igitur tres anni absque bello inter Syriam et Israel.
Then, in the third year, Jehoshaphat king of Judah paid a visit to the king of Israel.2 In anno autem tertio descendit Iosaphat rex ludae ad regem Israel,
The king of Israel said to his officers, 'You are aware that Ramoth in Gilead belongs to us? And yet wedo nothing to wrest it away from the king of Aram.'3 dixitque rex Israel ad servos suos: “ Ignoratis quod nostra sit Ramoth Galaad et neglegimus tollere eam de manu regis Syriae? ”.
He said to Jehoshaphat, 'Wil you come with me to attack Ramoth in Gilead?' Jehoshaphat replied tothe king of Israel, 'I will be as you, my men as yours, my horses as yours.'4 Et ait ad Iosaphat: “ Veniesne mecum ad proeliandum in Ramoth Galaad? ”.
Jehoshaphat, however, said to the king of Israel, 'First, please enquire what the word of Yahweh is.'5 Dixitque Iosaphat ad regem Israel: “ Sicut ego sum, ita et tu; populus meus et populus tuus unum sunt, et equites mei et equites tui ”. Dixitque Iosaphat ad regem Israel: “ Quaere, oro te, hodie sermonem Domini ”.
The king of Israel then cal ed the prophets together, about four hundred of them. 'Should I go andattack Ramoth in Gilead,' he asked, 'or should I hold back?' 'Go ahead,' they replied, 'for Yahweh has alreadygiven it to the king.'6 Congregavit ergo rex Israel prophetas quadringentos circiter viros et ait ad eos: “ Ire debeo in Ramoth Galaad ad bellandum, an quiescere? ”. Qui responderunt: “ Ascende, et dabit Dominus in manu regis ”.
Jehoshaphat, however, said, 'Is there no other prophet of Yahweh here, so that we can enquirethrough him?'7 Dixit autem Iosaphat: “ Non est hic et alius propheta Domini, ut interrogemus per eum? ”.
The king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, 'There is one more man through whom we can consultYahweh, but I hate him because he never has a favourable prophecy for me, only unfavourable ones; he isMicaiah son of Imlah.' 'I hope the king's words are unjustified,' said Jehoshaphat.8 Et ait rex Israel ad Iosaphat: “ Remansit vir unus, per quem possimus interrogare Dominum; sed ego odi eum, quia non prophetat mihi bonum sed malum: Michaeas filius Iemla ”. Cui Iosaphat ait: “ Ne loquaris ita, rex ”.
The king of Israel then summoned a court official and said, 'Bring Micaiah son of Imlah immediately.'9 Vocavit ergo rex Israel eunuchum quendam et dixit ei: “ Festina adducere Michaeam filium Iemla ”.
The king of Israel and Jehoshaphat king of Judah were sitting each on his throne, wearing their robes,in an open space just outside the gate of Samaria, with al the prophets in a state of ecstasy before them.10 Rex autem Israel et Iosaphat rex Iudae sedebat unusquisque in solio suo vestiti cultu regio in area iuxta ostium portae Samariae; et universi prophetae prophetabant in conspectu eorum.
Zedekiah son of Kenaanah, who had made himself some iron horns, said, 'Yahweh says, "With hornslike these you wil gore the Aramaeans til you make an end of them." '11 Fecit quoque sibi Sedecias filius Chanaana cornua ferrea et ait: “ Haec dicit Dominus: His ventilabis Syriam, donec deleas eam ”.
And all the prophets cried ecstatical y in the same vein, saying, 'March on Ramoth in Gilead! Success is sure, for Yahweh has already given it to the king!'12 Omnesque prophetae similiter prophetabant dicentes: “ Ascende in Ramoth Galaad et vade prospere, et tradet Dominus in manu regis ”.
The messenger who had gone to summon Micaiah said to him, 'Look here, what the prophets aresaying is uniformly favourable to the king. I hope you wil say the same as they do and speak favourably.'13 Nuntius vero, qui ierat ut vocaret Michaeam, locutus est ad eum dicens: “ Ecce sermones prophetarum ore uno regi bona praedicant; sit ergo sermo tuus similis eorum, et loquere bona ”.
Micaiah said, 'As Yahweh lives, I shal speak as Yahweh tel s me!'14 Cui Michaeas ait: “ Vivit Dominus quia, quodcumque dixerit mihi Dominus, hoc loquar! ”.
When he came to the king, the king said, 'Micaiah, should we go and attack Ramoth in Gilead, orshould we hold back?' He replied, 'Go ahead! Success is sure, for Yahweh has already given it to the king!'15 Venit itaque ad regem, et ait illi rex: “ Michaea, ire debemus in Ramoth Galaad ad proeliandum, an cessare? ”. Cui ille respondit: “ Ascende et vade prospere, et tradet Dominus in manu regis ”.
The king then said, 'How often must I put you on oath to tell me nothing but the truth in the name ofYahweh?'16 Dixit autem rex ad eum: “ Iterum atque iterum adiuro te, ut non loquaris mihi, nisi quod verum est in nomine Domini ”.
Then he spoke out: I saw al Israel scattered on the mountains like sheep without a shepherd. AndYahweh said, 'These have no master, let them all go safely home!'17 Et ille ait:
“ Vidi cunctum Israel
dispersum in montibus
quasi oves non habentes pastorem. Et ait Dominus: “Non habent isti dominum; revertatur unusquisque in domum suam in pace” ”.
At this the king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, 'Did I not tell you that he never gives me favourableprophecies, but only unfavourable ones?'18 Dixit ergo rex Israel ad Iosaphat: “ Numquid non dixi tibi quia non prophetat mihi bonum sed semper malum? ”.
Micaiah went on, 'Now listen to the word of Yahweh. I saw Yahweh seated on his throne with thewhole array of heaven standing by him, on his right and on his left.19 Ille vero addens ait: “ Propterea audi sermonem Domini: Vidi Dominum sedentem super solium suum et omnem exercitum caeli assistentem ei a dextris et a sinistris.
Yahweh said, "Who will entice Ahab into marching to his death at Ramoth in Gilead?" At which someanswered one way, and some another.20 Et ait Dominus: “Quis decipiet Achab, ut ascendat et cadat in Ramoth Galaad?”. Et dixit unus verba huiuscemodi et alius aliter.
A spirit then came forward and stood before Yahweh and said, "I wil entice him."21 Egressus est autem spiritus et stetit coram Domino et ait: “Ego decipiam illum”. Cui locutus est Dominus: “In quo?”.
"How?" Yahweh asked. He replied, "I shal go and be a deceptive spirit in the mouths of al hisprophets." Yahweh said, "You wil succeed in enticing him. Go and do it."22 Et ille ait: “Egrediar et ero spiritus mendax in ore omnium prophetarum eius”. Et dixit Dominus: “Decipies et praevalebis; egredere et fac ita”.
And now, you see, Yahweh has put a deceptive spirit into the mouths of al your prophets here, for infact Yahweh has pronounced disaster on you.'23 Nunc igitur ecce dedit Dominus spiritum mendacii in ore omnium prophetarum tuorum, qui hic sunt, et Dominus locutus est contra te malum ”.
Zedekiah son of Chenaanah then came up, struck Micaiah on the cheek and said, 'Which way didYahweh's spirit leave me, to speak to you?'24 Accessit autem Sedecias filius Chanaana et percussit Michaeam in maxillam et dixit: “ Quomodo transivit spiritus Domini a me, ut loqueretur tibi? ”.
'That is what you will find out,' Micaiah retorted, 'the day you go from room to room, trying to hide.'25 Et ait Michaeas: “ Visurus es in die illa, quando ingredieris cubiculum intra cubiculum, ut abscondaris ”.
The king of Israel said, 'Seize Micaiah and hand him over to Amon, governor of the city, and Joash,the king's son,26 Et ait rex Israel: “ Tolle Michaeam, et maneat apud Amon principem civitatis et apud Ioas filium regis,
and say, "These are the king's orders: Put this man in prison and feed him on nothing but bread andwater until I am safely home." '27 et dic eis: “Haec dicit rex: Mittite virum istum in carcerem et sustentate eum pane tribulationis et aqua angustiae, donec revertar in pace” ”.
Micaiah said, 'If you ever do get home safely, Yahweh has not spoken through me.'28 Dixitque Michaeas: “ Si reversus fueris in pace, non est locutus Dominus in me ”. Et ait: “ Audite, populi omnes! ”.
The king of Israel and Jehoshaphat king of Judah marched on Ramoth in Gilead.29 Ascendit itaque rex Israel et Iosaphat rex Iudae in Ramoth Galaad.
The king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, 'I shal disguise myself to go into battle, but you put on yourrobes.' So the king of Israel disguised himself and went into battle.30 Dixitque rex Israel ad Iosaphat: “ Mutato aspectu ineundum est proelium; tu autem induere vestibus tuis ”. Porro rex Israel mutavit aspectum et ingressus est bellum.
Now, the king of Aram had given his chariot commanders the fol owing order, 'Do not attack anyoneof whatever rank, except the king of Israel.'31 Rex autem Syriae praeceperat principibus curruum triginta duobus dicens: “ Non pugnabitis contra minorem et maiorem quempiam, nisi contra regem Israel solum ”.
So, when the chariot commanders saw Jehoshaphat, they thought, 'That is obviously the king ofIsrael,' and surrounded him to attack. But when Jehoshaphat shouted his war cry32 Cum ergo vidissent principes curruum Iosaphat, suspicati sunt quod ipse esset rex Israel et impetu facto pugnabant contra eum. Et exclamavit Iosaphat;
the chariot commanders, realising that he was not the king of Israel, broke off their pursuit.33 intellexeruntque principes curruum quod non esset rex Israel et cessaverunt ab eo.
Someone, however, drawing his bow without any special aim, shot the king of Israel between thejoints of his armour. 'Turn about!' said the king to his charioteer. 'Get me out of the fighting; I am col apsing.'34 Vir autem quidam tetendit arcum in incertum sagittam dirigens et percussit regem Israel inter iuncturas et loricam. At ille dixit aurigae suo: “ Verte manum tuam et eice me de exercitu, quia graviter vulneratus sum ”.
But the battle grew fiercer as the day went on and the king had to be held upright in his chariot facingthe Aramaeans, the blood from the wound running into the bottom of the chariot, until in the evening he died.35 Aggravatum est ergo proelium in die illa; et rex Israel stabat in curru suo contra Syros et mortuus est vespere: fluebat autem sanguis plagae in sinum currus.
At sundown a shout ran through the ranks, 'Every man back to his town, every man back to hiscountry!36 Et clamor insonuit in universo exercitu ad solis occasum: “ Unusquisque revertatur in civitatem et in terram suam! ”.
The king is dead.' He was taken to Samaria and in Samaria the king was buried.37 Mortuus est igitur rex et perlatus est Samariam; sepelieruntque regem in Samaria.
They washed the chariot at the Pool of Samaria; the dogs licked up the blood, and the prostituteswashed in it, in accordance with the word which Yahweh had spoken.38 Et laverunt currum eius in piscina Samariae; et linxerunt canes sanguinem eius, et scorta laverunt se iuxta verbum Domini, quod locutus fuerat.
The rest of the history of Ahab, his entire career, the ivory house he erected, al the towns he built, isthis not recorded in the Book of the Annals of the Kings of Israel?39 Reliqua vero gestorum Achab et universa, quae fecit, et domus eburnea, quam aedificavit, cunctaeque urbes, quas exstruxit, nonne haec scripta sunt in libro annalium regum Israel?
When Ahab fel asleep with his ancestors, his son Ahaziah succeeded him.40 Dormivit ergo Achab cum patribus suis; et regnavit Ochozias filius eius pro eo.
Jehoshaphat son of Asa became king of Judah in the fourth year of Ahab king of Israel.41 Iosaphat vero filius Asa regnare coeperat super Iudam anno quarto Achab regis Israel;
Jehoshaphat was thirty-five years old when he came to the throne, and he reigned for twenty-fiveyears in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Azubah daughter of Shilhi.42 triginta quinque annorum erat, cum regnare coepisset, et viginti quinque annos regnavit in Ierusalem. Nomen matris eius Azuba filia Selachi.
In every way he followed the example of his father Asa undeviatingly, doing what is pleasing toYahweh.43 Et ambulavit in omni via Asa patris sui et non declinavit ex ea; fecitque, quod rectum erat in conspectu Domini.
The high places, however, were not abolished; the people stil offered sacrifice and incense on thehigh places.44 Verumtamen excelsa non abstulit; adhuc enim populus sacrificabat et adolebat in excelsis.
Jehoshaphat was at peace with the king of Israel.45 Pacemque fecit Iosaphat cum rege Israel.
The rest of the history of Jehoshaphat, the valour he showed, the wars he waged, is this not recordedin the Book of the Annals of the Kings of Judah?46 Reliqua autem gestorum Iosaphat et opera eius, quae fortiter gessit, et proelia, nonne haec scripta sunt in libro annalium regum Iudae?
The few male sacred prostitutes left over from the days of his father Asa, he expel ed from thecountry.47 Sed et reliquias prostibulorum, qui remanserant in diebus Asa patris eius, abstulit de terra.
At the time, Edom had no king, and King48 Nec erat tunc rex in Edom sed praefectus regius.
Jehoshaphat built ships of Tarshish to go to Ophir for gold, but they never made the voyage since theships were wrecked at Ezion-Geber.49 Rex vero Iosaphat fecerat naves Tharsis, quae navigarent in Ophir propter aurum; et ire non potuerunt, quia confractae sunt in Asiongaber.
Ahaziah son of Ahab then proposed to Jehoshaphat, 'Let my men go to sea with yours.' ButJehoshaphat would not agree.50 Tunc ait Ochozias filius Achab ad Iosaphat: “ Vadant servi mei cum servis tuis in navibus ”. Et noluit Iosaphat.
When Jehoshaphat fel asleep with his ancestors he was buried in the City of his ancestor, David; hisson Jehoram succeeded him.51 Dormivitque Iosaphat cum patribus suis et sepultus est cum eis in civitate David patris sui; regnavitque Ioram filius eius pro eo.
Ahaziah son of Ahab became king of Israel in Samaria in the seventeenth year of Jehoshaphat king ofJudah, and reigned over Israel for two years.52 Ochozias autem filius Achab regnare coeperat super Israel in Samaria anno septimo decimo Iosaphat regis Iudae regnavitque super Israel duobus annis.
He did what is displeasing to Yahweh, by following the example of his father and mother, and ofJeroboam son of Nebat who had led Israel into sin.53 Et fecit malum in conspectu Domini et ambulavit in via patris sui et matris suae et in via Ieroboam filii Nabat, qui peccare fecit Israel;
He served Baal and worshipped him, and provoked the anger of Yahweh God of Israel just as hisfather had done.54 servivit quoque Baal et adoravit eum et irritavit Dominum, Deum Israel, iuxta omnia, quae fecerat pater eius.
