NEW JERUSALEMNOVA VULGATA
Dinah, who was Jacob's daughter by Leah, went out to visit some of the women of that region.1 Egressa est autem Dina filia, quam Lia pepererat Iacob, ut videret filias regionis illius.
Shechem son of Hamor the Hivite, headman of the region, saw her, seized her and forced her tosleep with him.2 Quam cum vidisset Sichem filius Hemmor Hevaei principis terrae illius, adamavit eam et rapuit; et dormivit cum illa, vi opprimens illam.
He was captivated by Dinah daughter of Jacob; he fel in love with the girl and tried to win her heart.3 Et conglutinata est anima eius cum ea, et amavit puellam et locutus est ad cor eius.
Accordingly Shechem said to his father Hamor, 'Get me this girl; I want to marry her.'4 Dixitque ad Hemmor patrem suum: “ Accipe mihi puellam hanc coniugem ”.
Meanwhile, Jacob had heard how his daughter Dinah had been dishonoured, but since his sons wereout in the countryside with his livestock, Jacob said nothing until they came back.5 Cum audisset Iacob quod violasset Dinam filiam suam, absentibus filiis et in pastu pecorum occupatis, siluit, donec redirent.
Hamor father of Shechem was visiting Jacob to discuss the matter with him,6 Egresso autem Hemmor patre Sichem, ut loqueretur ad Iacob,
when Jacob's sons returned from the countryside and heard the news; the men were outraged andinfuriated that Shechem had insulted Israel by sleeping with Jacob's daughter -- a thing total y unacceptable.7 ecce filii Iacob veniebant de agro, auditoque, quod acciderat, contristati et irati sunt valde, eo quod foedam rem esset operatus in Israel et, violata filia Iacob, rem illicitam perpetrasset.
Hamor reasoned with them as fol ows, 'My son Shechem's heart is set on your daughter. Please al owher to marry him.8 Locutus est itaque Hemmor ad eos: “ Sichem filii mei adhaesit anima filiae vestrae; date eam illi uxorem,
Intermarry with us; give us your daughters and take our daughters for yourselves.9 et iungamus vicissim conubia: filias vestras tradite nobis et filias nostras accipite vobis.
We can live together, and the country wil be open to you, for you to live in, and move about in, andacquire holdings.'10 Et habitate nobiscum; terra in potestate vestra est: manete, perambulate et possidete eam ”.
Then Shechem addressed the girl's father and brothers, 'Grant me this favour, and I will give youwhatever you ask.11 Sed et Sichem ad patrem et ad fratres eius ait: “ Inveniam gratiam coram vobis et, quaecumque statueritis, dabo.
Demand as high a bride-price from me as you please, and I wil pay as much as you ask. Only let memarry the girl.'12 Augete mihi valde dotem et munera; libens tribuam, quod petieritis. Tantum date mihi puellam hanc uxorem ”.
Jacob's sons gave Shechem and his father Hamor a crafty answer, speaking as they did because hehad dishonoured their sister Dinah.13 Responderunt filii Iacob Sichem et Hemmor patri eius in dolo ob stuprum sororis:
'We cannot do this,' they said to them. 'To give our sister to an uncircumcised man would be adisgrace for us.14 “ Non possumus facere, quod petitis, dare sororem nostram homini incircumciso, opprobrium enim esset nobis.
We can agree only on one condition: that you become like us by circumcising al your males.15 In hoc tantum valebimus acquiescere vobis: si esse volueritis similes nostri, circumcidatur in vobis omne masculini sexus;
Then we wil give you our daughters, taking yours for ourselves; and we wil stay with you to makeone nation.16 tunc dabimus et accipiemus mutuo filias nostras ac vestras et habitabimus vobiscum erimusque unus populus.
But if you will not agree to our terms about being circumcised, we shal take our daughter and go.'17 Si autem circumcidi nolueritis, tollemus filiam nostram et recedemus ”.
Hamor and Shechem son of Hamor were pleased with what they heard.18 Placuit oblatio eorum Hemmor et Sichem filio eius,
The young man did not hesitate about doing this, for he was deeply in love with Jacob's daughter.Moreover he was the most respected member of his entire family.19 nec distulit adulescens quin statim, quod petebatur, expleret; amabat enim filiam Iacob valde, et ipse erat inclitus in omni domo patris sui.
Hamor and his son Shechem went to the gate of their town and spoke to their fellow-townsmen asfol ows,20 Ingressique portam urbis, Hemmor et Sichem filius eius locuti sunt ad viros civitatis suae:
'These men are friendly; let them settle in the region and move about freely in it; there is plenty ofroom here for them; we shal marry their daughters and give our daughters to them.21 “ Viri isti pacifici sunt erga nos; maneant in terra et perambulent eam, quae spatiosa et lata est eis; filias eorum accipiemus uxores et nostras illis dabimus.
But these men will agree to settle with us and become a single nation only on this condition: that alour males be circumcised like them.22 Tantum in hoc valebunt viri acquiescere nobis, ut maneant nobiscum et efficiamur unus populus, si circumcidamus masculos nostros ritum gentis imitantes;
Wil not the livestock they own, al their animals, become ours? Then let us give our assent to this, sothat they can settle with us.'23 et pecora et substantia et armenta eorum nostra erunt. Tantum in hoc acquiescamus, et habitabunt nobiscum ”.
Al the citizens of the town agreed to the proposal made by Hamor and his son Shechem, and al themales were circumcised.24 Assensique sunt omnes, circumcisis cunctis maribus, qui egrediebantur e porta civitatis suae.
Now on the third day, when the men were stil in pain, Jacob's two sons Simeon and Levi, Dinah'sbrothers, each took his sword and advanced unopposed against the town and slaughtered al the males.25 Et ecce, die tertio, quando gravissimus vulnerum dolor est, arreptis duo filii Iacob Simeon et Levi fratres Dinae gladiis, ingressi sunt urbem securi; interfectisque omnibus masculis,
They kil ed Hamor and his son Shechem with the sword, removed Dinah from Shechem's house andcame away.26 Hemmor et Sichem pariter necaverunt, tollentes Dinam de domo Sichem sororem suam.
When Jacob's other sons came on the slain, they pil aged the town in reprisal for the dishonouring oftheir sister.27 Filii Iacob irruerunt super occisos, et depopulati sunt urbem in ultionem stupri.
They seized their flocks, cattle, donkeys, everything else in the town and in the countryside,28 Oves eorum et armenta et asinos cunctaque, quae in civitate et in agris erant, tulerunt.
and al their possessions. They took al their children and wives captive and looted everything to befound in the houses.29 Omnes opes eorum, parvulos quoque et uxores duxerunt captivas et diripuerunt omnia, quae in domibus erant.
Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, 'You have done me an il turn by bringing me into bad odour with thepeople of the region, the Canaanites and the Perizzites. I have few men, whereas they wil unite against me todefeat me and destroy me and my family.'30 Iacob autem dixit ad Simeon et Levi: “ Turbastis me et odiosum fecistis me Chananaeis et Pherezaeis habitatoribus terrae huius. Nos pauci sumus; illi congregati percutient me, et delebor ego et domus mea ”.
They retorted, 'Should our sister be treated like a whore?'31 Responderunt: “ Numquid ut scorto abuti debuere sorore nostra? ”.
