NEW JERUSALEM	BIBLES DES PEUPLES
1 Dinah, who was Jacob's daughter by Leah, went out to visit some of the women of that region.	1 Dinah était la fille de Léa et de Jacob. Comme elle était sortie pour voir les filles du pays,
2 Shechem son of Hamor the Hivite, headman of the region, saw her, seized her and forced her tosleep with him.	2 Sichem, fils de Hamor le Hivvite, prince du pays, la vit et la prit. Il coucha avec elle et la viola.
3 He was captivated by Dinah daughter of Jacob; he fel in love with the girl and tried to win her heart.	3 Son cœur s’attacha à Dinah fille de Jacob, il aima la jeune fille et parla à son cœur.
4 Accordingly Shechem said to his father Hamor, 'Get me this girl; I want to marry her.'	4 Sichem dit à Hamor son père: “Prends-moi donc cette jeune fille pour femme.”
5 Meanwhile, Jacob had heard how his daughter Dinah had been dishonoured, but since his sons wereout in the countryside with his livestock, Jacob said nothing until they came back.	5 Jacob apprit qu’il avait souillé Dinah, sa fille; mais comme ses fils étaient dans la campagne avec le troupeau, Jacob garda le silence jusqu’à leur retour.
6 Hamor father of Shechem was visiting Jacob to discuss the matter with him,	6 Hamor, le père de Sichem, alla trouver Jacob pour parler avec lui de cette affaire.
7 when Jacob's sons returned from the countryside and heard the news; the men were outraged andinfuriated that Shechem had insulted Israel by sleeping with Jacob's daughter -- a thing total y unacceptable.	7 À leur retour des champs, les fils de Jacob apprirent ce qui s’était passé: scandalisés, ils entrèrent dans une violente colère parce que Sichem venait de commettre une chose inadmissible en Israël: il avait couché avec la fille de Jacob! Cela ne se fait pas!
8 Hamor reasoned with them as fol ows, 'My son Shechem's heart is set on your daughter. Please al owher to marry him.	8 Hamor leur dit ceci: “Mon fils Sichem est épris de votre fille, acceptez de la lui donner en mariage.
9 Intermarry with us; give us your daughters and take our daughters for yourselves.	9 Alliez-vous avec nous par des mariages. Vous nous donnerez vos filles et vous prendrez nos filles.
10 We can live together, and the country wil be open to you, for you to live in, and move about in, andacquire holdings.'	10 Vous habiterez avec nous, le pays sera vôtre. Habitez-y, parcourez-le et prenez-en possession.”
11 Then Shechem addressed the girl's father and brothers, 'Grant me this favour, and I will give youwhatever you ask.	11 Sichem dit au père et aux frères de la jeune fille: “Veuillez me pardonner et je vous donnerai ce que vous me demanderez.
12 Demand as high a bride-price from me as you please, and I wil pay as much as you ask. Only let memarry the girl.'	12 Imposez-moi un prix et un cadeau important, je donnerai ce que vous aurez demandé et ensuite vous me donnerez la jeune fille pour qu’elle soit ma femme.”
13 Jacob's sons gave Shechem and his father Hamor a crafty answer, speaking as they did because hehad dishonoured their sister Dinah.	13 Les fils de Jacob donnèrent une réponse à Sichem et à son père Hamor, mais c’était seulement pour l’avoir, parce qu’il avait souillé leur sœur Dinah.
14 'We cannot do this,' they said to them. 'To give our sister to an uncircumcised man would be adisgrace for us.	14 Ils dirent donc: “ Il ne nous est pas possible de donner notre sœur à un homme incirconcis, ce serait une honte pour nous.
15 We can agree only on one condition: that you become like us by circumcising al your males.	15 Nous ne donnerons notre accord qu’à une seule condition: devenez comme nous, faites circoncire chez vous tous les mâles.
16 Then we wil give you our daughters, taking yours for ourselves; and we wil stay with you to makeone nation.	16 Alors nous vous donnerons nos filles et nous prendrons vos filles pour nous, nous habiterons avec vous et nous ne ferons plus qu’un seul peuple.
17 But if you will not agree to our terms about being circumcised, we shal take our daughter and go.'	17 Mais si vous n’êtes pas d’accord, si vous ne vous faites pas circoncire, nous reprendrons notre fille et nous partirons.”
18 Hamor and Shechem son of Hamor were pleased with what they heard.	18 Ce discours plut à Hamor et à son fils Sichem.
19 The young man did not hesitate about doing this, for he was deeply in love with Jacob's daughter.Moreover he was the most respected member of his entire family.	19 Le jeune homme ne tarda pas à s’exécuter car il désirait la fille de Jacob. Or il était le plus considéré de toute la maison de son père.
20 Hamor and his son Shechem went to the gate of their town and spoke to their fellow-townsmen asfol ows,	20 Hamor et son fils Sichem vinrent donc à la porte de la ville et s’adressèrent ainsi aux hommes de leur ville:
21 'These men are friendly; let them settle in the region and move about freely in it; there is plenty ofroom here for them; we shal marry their daughters and give our daughters to them.	21 “Ces gens sont pacifiques, laissons-les habiter le pays avec nous et qu’ils puissent y circuler: le pays est vaste. Nous épouserons leurs filles et nous leur donnerons nos filles.
22 But these men will agree to settle with us and become a single nation only on this condition: that alour males be circumcised like them.	22 Cependant ces hommes mettent une condition pour habiter avec nous et ne plus faire qu’un seul peuple: nous devons circoncire chez nous tous les mâles comme ils le font chez eux.
23 Wil not the livestock they own, al their animals, become ours? Then let us give our assent to this, sothat they can settle with us.'	23 Ne voyez-vous pas que tout ce qu’ils possèdent nous appartiendra, tous leurs troupeaux, tous leurs animaux? Donnons-leur notre accord et ils habiteront avec nous.”
24 Al the citizens of the town agreed to the proposal made by Hamor and his son Shechem, and al themales were circumcised.	24 Tous ceux qui passaient par la porte de la ville écoutèrent Hamor et son fils Sichem. Tous les mâles furent donc circoncis, tous ceux qui passaient par la porte de la ville.
25 Now on the third day, when the men were stil in pain, Jacob's two sons Simeon and Levi, Dinah'sbrothers, each took his sword and advanced unopposed against the town and slaughtered al the males.	25 Or le troisième jour, comme ils étaient souffrants, deux des fils de Jacob, Siméon et Lévi, frères de Dinah, prirent leur épée, entrèrent sans aucun risque dans la ville et tuèrent tous les mâles.
26 They kil ed Hamor and his son Shechem with the sword, removed Dinah from Shechem's house andcame away.	26 Ils massacrèrent Hamor et son fils Sichem, ils reprirent Dinah dans la maison de Sichem et partirent.
27 When Jacob's other sons came on the slain, they pil aged the town in reprisal for the dishonouring oftheir sister.	27 Les fils de Jacob dépouillèrent les morts et pillèrent la ville parce qu’on avait souillé leur sœur.
28 They seized their flocks, cattle, donkeys, everything else in the town and in the countryside,	28 Ils prirent leur petit bétail, leur gros bétail, leurs ânes, tout ce qui était dans la ville et tout ce qui était dans les champs.
29 and al their possessions. They took al their children and wives captive and looted everything to befound in the houses.	29 Ils prirent toutes leurs richesses, leurs petits enfants ainsi que leurs femmes, et pillèrent tout ce qui était dans les maisons.
30 Jacob said to Simeon and Levi, 'You have done me an il turn by bringing me into bad odour with thepeople of the region, the Canaanites and the Perizzites. I have few men, whereas they wil unite against me todefeat me and destroy me and my family.'	30 Alors Jacob dit à Siméon et à Lévi: “Vous voulez mon malheur! Vous m’avez rendu odieux aux habitants du pays, aux Cananéens et aux Périsites, et moi je n’ai que très peu d’hommes. Ils vont se réunir contre moi, ils me battront et nous serons exterminés, moi et ma famille.”
31 They retorted, 'Should our sister be treated like a whore?'	31 Mais ses fils répondirent: “Est-ce qu’on traite notre sœur comme une prostituée?”
