Genesis 21

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA TINTORI
1 Yahweh treated Sarah as he had said, and did what he had promised her.	1 Il Signore poi visitò Sara, come aveva promesso e adempì la sua parola.
2 Sarah conceived and bore Abraham a son in his old age, at the time God had promised.	2 E Sara nella sua vecchiaia concepì e partorì un figlio, nel tempo predettole da Dio.
3 Abraham named the son born to him Isaac, the son to whom Sarah had given birth.	3 E Abramo pose il nome di Isacco al figlio partoritogli da Sara;
4 Abraham circumcised his son Isaac when he was eight days old, as God had commanded him.	4 e l'ottavo giorno lo circoncise, come Dio gli aveva comandato.
5 Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him.	5 Abramo aveva cento anni, quando gli nacque il suo figliolo Isacco,
6 Sarah said: God has given me cause to laugh! Al who hear about this wil laugh with me!	6 E Sara disse: « Dio m'ha dato di che ridere, e chiunque ne avrà notizia riderà con me ».
7 She added: Whoever would have told Abraham that Sarah would nurse children! Yet I have borne ason in his old age.	7 E aggiunse: « Chi avrebbe mai creduto che Abramo avrebbe sentito dire che Sara allatta un figlio partorito a lui già vecchio! »
8 The child grew and was weaned, and Abraham gave a great banquet on the day Isaac was weaned.	8 Crebbe intanto il fanciullo e fu slattato; e, nel giorno in cui fu divezzato, Abramo fece un gran convito.
9 Now Sarah watched the son that Hagar the Egyptian had borne to Abraham, playing with her sonIsaac.	9 Or avendo Sara veduto che il figlio dell'egiziana Agar si prendeva giuoco del suo figliolo Isacco, disse ad Abramo:
10 'Drive away that slave-girl and her son,' she said to Abraham, 'this slave-girl's son is not to share theinheritance with my son Isaac.'	10 « Caccia questa schiava e il suo figlio, perchè il figlio della schiava non deve essere erede col mio figlio Isacco ».
11 This greatly distressed Abraham, because the slave-girl's child too was his son,	11 Queste parole dispiacquero molto ad Abramo, per riguardo al suo figlio;
12 but God said to him, 'Do not distress yourself on account of the boy and your slave-girl. Do whateverSarah says, for Isaac is the one through whom your name wil be carried on.	12 ma il Signore gli disse: «Non t'incresca di fare tutto quello che ha detto Sara riguardo al fanciullo e alla tua schiava, acconsenti pure, perchè da Isacco uscirà la progenie che porterà il tuo nome.
13 But the slave-girl's son I shal also make into a great nation, for he too is your child.'	13 Però anche del figlio della schiava io farò una grande nazione, perchè è tua progenie ».
14 Early next morning, Abraham took some bread and a skin of water and, giving them to Hagar, putthe child on her shoulder and sent her away. She wandered off into the desert of Beersheba.	14 Abramo adunque, alzatosi la mattina presto, prese del pane e un otre di acqua, lo pose sulle spalle di Agar, le consegnò il fanciullo, e la licenziò. Ed essa, partitasi, andò errando pel deserto di Bersabee.
15 When the skin of water was finished she abandoned the child under a bush.	15 Venuta a mancare l'acqua nell'otre, essa, abbandonato il fanciullo sotto un arbusto lì vicino,
16 Then she went and sat down at a distance, about a bowshot away, thinking, 'I cannot bear to see thechild die.' Sitting at a distance, she began to sob.	16 andò a sedere dirimpetto, alla distanza d'un tiro d'arco, dicendo: « Non vo' veder morire il fanciullo! » Sedutagli così di faccia, diede in alte grida e pianse.
17 God heard the boy crying, and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven. 'What is wrong,Hagar?' he asked. 'Do not be afraid, for God has heard the boy's cry in his plight.	17 Giunta a Dio la voce del fanciullo, l'angelo di Dio chiamò Agar dal cielo e le disse: « Che fai, o Agar! Non temere, perchè Dio ha ascoltata la voce del fanciullo dal luogo ove si trova.
18 Go and pick the boy up and hold him safe, for I shal make him into a great nation.'	18 Alzati e, preso il ragazzo, conducilo per mano, perchè io lo farò divenire un gran popolo ».
19 Then God opened Hagar's eyes and she saw a well, so she went and fil ed the skin with water andgave the boy a drink.	19 E avendole Dio aperti gli occhi, essa vide un pozzo d'acqua: andò a empir l'otre e diede da bere al fanciullo.
20 God was with the boy. He grew up and made his home in the desert, and he became an archer.	20 Dio fu con lui, ed egli crebbe ed abitò nel deserto, e divenne fin da giovane esperto nel tirar l'arco.
21 He made his home in the desert of Paran, and his mother got him a wife from Egypt.	21 Abitò nel deserto di Faran, e sua madre gli diede per moglie una donna del paese d'Egitto.
22 About then, Abimelech and Phicol, the commander of his army, said to Abraham, 'Since God is withyou in everything you do,	22 Nel medesimo tempo Abimelec con Ficol, capo del suo esercito, disse ad Abramo: « Dio è con te in tutto quello che fai:
23 swear to me by God, here and now, that you wil not act treacherously towards me or my kith andkin, but behave with the same faithful love to me and the land of which you are a guest as I have behaved toyou.'	23 giura dunque per Iddio che non farai del male nè a me nè ai miei posteri, nè alla mia stirpe; ma che userai verso di me e verso la terra in cui sei stato pellegrino, la stessa benevolenza che io ho usata verso di te ».
24 'Yes,' Abraham replied, 'I swear it.'	24 E Abramo disse: « Lo giurerò ».
25 Abraham then reproached Abimelech about a well that Abimelech's servants had seized.	25 Poi fece ad Abimelec delle rimostranze relativamente ad un pozzo d'acqua, del quale i servi d'Abimelec s'erano impadroniti colla violenza.
26 'I do not know who has done this,' Abimelech said. 'You yourself have never mentioned it to me and,for myself, I heard nothing of it til today.'	26 E Abimelec rispose: « Non so chi l'abbia potuto fare; del resto anche tu non m'hai fatto saper nulla, ed io non ne sento parlare che oggi ».
27 Abraham then took sheep and cattle and presented them to Abimelech, and the two of them made acovenant.	27 Allora Abramo prese delle pecore e dei buoi e li diede ad Abimelec, e i due fecero alleanza.
28 Abraham put seven lambs of the flock on one side.	28 Abramo poi mise da parte sette agnelle del gregge.
29 'Why have you put these seven lambs on one side?' Abimelech asked Abraham.	29 E Abimelec gli disse: « Che vorrebbero dire queste sette agnelle che hai messe da parte? »
30 He replied, 'You must accept these seven lambs from me as evidence that I have dug this wel .'	30 Abramo rispose: « Che tu accetterai dalla mia mano queste sette agnelle, affinchè mi servano a testimoniare che l'ho scavato io il pozzo ».
31 This was why the place was cal ed Beersheba: because there the two of them swore an oath.	31 Per questo quel luogo fu chiamato Bersabee, perchè ambedue vi giurarono.
32 After they had made a covenant at Beersheba, Abimelech and Phicol, the commander of his army,left and went back to Philistine territory.	32 Così fecero alleanza al pozzo del giuramento.
33 And Abraham planted a tamarisk at Beersheba and there he invoked the name of Yahweh.	33 Dopo, Abimelec e Ficol, capo del suo esercito, se ne andarono e tornarono nella terra dei Palestinesi. E Abramo piantò un bosco a Bersabee, ed ivi invocò il nome del Signore Dio eterno.
34 Abraham stayed for a long while in Philistine territory.	34 E per molto tempo fu coltivatore della terra dei Palestinesi.
