Genesis 21

NEW JERUSALEM	JERUSALEM
1 Yahweh treated Sarah as he had said, and did what he had promised her.	1 Yahvé visita Sara comme il avait dit et il fit pour elle comme il avait promis.
2 Sarah conceived and bore Abraham a son in his old age, at the time God had promised.	2 Sara conçut et enfanta un fils à Abraham déjà vieux, au temps que Dieu avait marqué.
3 Abraham named the son born to him Isaac, the son to whom Sarah had given birth.	3 Au fils qui lui naquit, enfanté par Sara, Abraham donna le nom d'Isaac.
4 Abraham circumcised his son Isaac when he was eight days old, as God had commanded him.	4 Abraham circoncit son fils Isaac, quand il eut huit jours, comme Dieu lui avait ordonné.
5 Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him.	5 Abraham avait cent ans lorsque lui naquit son fils Isaac.
6 Sarah said: God has given me cause to laugh! Al who hear about this wil laugh with me!	6 Et Sara dit: "Dieu m'a donné de quoi rire, tous ceux qui l'apprendront me souriront."
7 She added: Whoever would have told Abraham that Sarah would nurse children! Yet I have borne ason in his old age.	7 Elle dit aussi: "Qui aurait dit à Abraham que Sara allaiterait des enfants! car j'ai donné un fils à savieillesse."
8 The child grew and was weaned, and Abraham gave a great banquet on the day Isaac was weaned.	8 L'enfant grandit et fut sevré, et Abraham fit un grand festin le jour où l'on sevra Isaac.
9 Now Sarah watched the son that Hagar the Egyptian had borne to Abraham, playing with her sonIsaac.	9 Or Sara aperçut le fils né à Abraham de l'Egyptienne Agar, qui jouait avec son fils Isaac,
10 'Drive away that slave-girl and her son,' she said to Abraham, 'this slave-girl's son is not to share theinheritance with my son Isaac.'	10 et elle dit à Abraham: "Chasse cette servante et son fils, il ne faut pas que le fils de cette servantehérite avec mon fils Isaac."
11 This greatly distressed Abraham, because the slave-girl's child too was his son,	11 Cette parole déplut beaucoup à Abraham, à propos de son fils,
12 but God said to him, 'Do not distress yourself on account of the boy and your slave-girl. Do whateverSarah says, for Isaac is the one through whom your name wil be carried on.	12 mais Dieu lui dit: "Ne te chagrine pas à cause du petit et de ta servante, tout ce que Sara tedemande, accorde-le, car c'est par Isaac qu'une descendance perpétuera ton nom,
13 But the slave-girl's son I shal also make into a great nation, for he too is your child.'	13 mais du fils de la servante je ferai aussi une grande nation car il est de ta race."
14 Early next morning, Abraham took some bread and a skin of water and, giving them to Hagar, putthe child on her shoulder and sent her away. She wandered off into the desert of Beersheba.	14 Abraham se leva tôt, il prit du pain et une outre d'eau qu'il donna à Agar, et il mit l'enfant sur sonépaule, puis il la renvoya. Elle s'en fut errer au désert de Bersabée.
15 When the skin of water was finished she abandoned the child under a bush.	15 Quand l'eau de l'outre fut épuisée, elle jeta l'enfant sous un buisson
16 Then she went and sat down at a distance, about a bowshot away, thinking, 'I cannot bear to see thechild die.' Sitting at a distance, she began to sob.	16 et elle alla s'asseoir vis-à-vis, loin comme une portée d'arc. Elle se disait en effet: "Je ne veux pasvoir mourir l'enfant!" Elle s'assit vis-à-vis et elle se mit à crier et à pleurer.
17 God heard the boy crying, and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven. 'What is wrong,Hagar?' he asked. 'Do not be afraid, for God has heard the boy's cry in his plight.	17 Dieu entendit les cris du petit et l'Ange de Dieu appela du ciel Agar et lui dit: "Qu'as-tu, Agar? Necrains pas, car Dieu a entendu les cris du petit, là où il était.
18 Go and pick the boy up and hold him safe, for I shal make him into a great nation.'	18 Debout! soulève le petit et tiens-le ferme, car j'en ferai une grande nation."
19 Then God opened Hagar's eyes and she saw a well, so she went and fil ed the skin with water andgave the boy a drink.	19 Dieu dessilla les yeux d'Agar et elle aperçut un puits. Elle alla remplir l'outre et fit boire le petit.
20 God was with the boy. He grew up and made his home in the desert, and he became an archer.	20 Dieu fut avec lui, il grandit et demeura au désert, et il devint un tireur d'arc.
21 He made his home in the desert of Paran, and his mother got him a wife from Egypt.	21 Il demeura au désert de Parân et sa mère lui choisit une femme du pays d'Egypte.
22 About then, Abimelech and Phicol, the commander of his army, said to Abraham, 'Since God is withyou in everything you do,	22 En ce temps-là, Abimélek vint avec Pikol, le chef de son armée, dire à Abraham: "Dieu est avectoi en tout ce que tu fais.
23 swear to me by God, here and now, that you wil not act treacherously towards me or my kith andkin, but behave with the same faithful love to me and the land of which you are a guest as I have behaved toyou.'	23 Maintenant, jure-moi ici par Dieu que tu ne me tromperas pas, ni mon lignage et parentage, et quetu auras pour moi et pour ce pays où tu es venu en hôte la même amitié que j'ai eue pour toi."
24 'Yes,' Abraham replied, 'I swear it.'	24 Abraham répondit: "Oui, je le jure!"
25 Abraham then reproached Abimelech about a well that Abimelech's servants had seized.	25 Abraham fit reproche à Abimélek à propos du puits que les serviteurs d'Abimélek avaient usurpé.
26 'I do not know who has done this,' Abimelech said. 'You yourself have never mentioned it to me and,for myself, I heard nothing of it til today.'	26 Et Abimélek répondit: "Je ne sais pas qui a pu faire cela: toi-même ne m'en as jamais informé etmoi-même je n'en ai rienappris qu'aujourd'hui."
27 Abraham then took sheep and cattle and presented them to Abimelech, and the two of them made acovenant.	27 Abraham prit du petit et du gros bétail et le donna à Abimélek, et tous les deux conclurent unealliance.
28 Abraham put seven lambs of the flock on one side.	28 Abraham mit à part sept brebis du troupeau,
29 'Why have you put these seven lambs on one side?' Abimelech asked Abraham.	29 et Abimélek lui demanda: "Que font là ces sept brebis que tuas mises à part?"
30 He replied, 'You must accept these seven lambs from me as evidence that I have dug this wel .'	30 Il répondit: "C'est pour que tu acceptes de ma main ces sept brebis, afin qu'elles soient untémoignage que j'ai bien creusé ce puits."
31 This was why the place was cal ed Beersheba: because there the two of them swore an oath.	31 C'est ainsi qu'on appela ce lieu Bersabée, parce qu'ils y avaient tous deux prêté serment.
32 After they had made a covenant at Beersheba, Abimelech and Phicol, the commander of his army,left and went back to Philistine territory.	32 Après qu'ils eurent conclu alliance à Bersabée, Abimélek se leva, avec Pikol, le chef de sonarmée, et ils retournèrent au pays des Philistins.
33 And Abraham planted a tamarisk at Beersheba and there he invoked the name of Yahweh.	33 Abraham planta un tamaris à Bersabée et il y invoqua le nom de Yahvé, Dieu d'Eternité.
34 Abraham stayed for a long while in Philistine territory.	34 Abraham séjourna longtemps au pays des Philistins.
