Genesis 21

NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 Yahweh treated Sarah as he had said, and did what he had promised her.	1 El Señor visitó a Sara como lo había dicho, y obró con ella conforme a su promesa.
2 Sarah conceived and bore Abraham a son in his old age, at the time God had promised.	2 En el momento anunciado por Dios, Sara concibió y dio un hijo a Abraham, que ya era anciano.
3 Abraham named the son born to him Isaac, the son to whom Sarah had given birth.	3 Cuando nació el niño que le dio Sara, Abraham le puso el nombre de Isaac.
4 Abraham circumcised his son Isaac when he was eight days old, as God had commanded him.	4 Abraham circuncidó a su hijo Isaac a los ocho días, como Dios se lo había ordenado.
5 Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him.	5 Abraham tenía entonces cien años de edad.
6 Sarah said: God has given me cause to laugh! Al who hear about this wil laugh with me!	6 Sara dijo: «Dios me ha dado motivo para reír, y todos los que se enteren reirán conmigo».
7 She added: Whoever would have told Abraham that Sarah would nurse children! Yet I have borne ason in his old age.	7 Y añadió: «¡Quién le hubiera dicho a Abraham que Sara amamantaría hijos! Porque yo le di un hijo en su vejez».
8 The child grew and was weaned, and Abraham gave a great banquet on the day Isaac was weaned.	8 El niño creció y fue destetado, y el día en que lo destetaron, Abraham ofreció un gran banquete.
9 Now Sarah watched the son that Hagar the Egyptian had borne to Abraham, playing with her sonIsaac.	9 Sara vio que el hijo de Agar, la egipcia, jugaba con su hijo Isaac.
10 'Drive away that slave-girl and her son,' she said to Abraham, 'this slave-girl's son is not to share theinheritance with my son Isaac.'	10 Entonces dijo a Abraham: «Echa a esa esclava y a su hijo, porque el hijo de esa esclava no va a compartir la herencia con mi hijo Isaac».
11 This greatly distressed Abraham, because the slave-girl's child too was his son,	11 Esto afligió profundamente a Abraham, ya que el otro también era hijo suyo.
12 but God said to him, 'Do not distress yourself on account of the boy and your slave-girl. Do whateverSarah says, for Isaac is the one through whom your name wil be carried on.	12 Pero Dios le dijo: «No te aflijas por el niño y por tu esclava. Concédele a Sara lo que ella te pide, porque de Isaac nacerá la descendencia que llevará tu nombre.
13 But the slave-girl's son I shal also make into a great nation, for he too is your child.'	13 Y en cuanto al hijo de la esclava, yo hará de él una gran nación, porque también es descendiente tuyo».
14 Early next morning, Abraham took some bread and a skin of water and, giving them to Hagar, putthe child on her shoulder and sent her away. She wandered off into the desert of Beersheba.	14 A la madrugada del día siguiente, Abraham tomó un poco de pan y un odre con agua y se los dio a Agar; se los puso sobre las espaldas, y la despidió junto con el niño. Ella partió y anduvo errante por el desierto de Berseba.
15 When the skin of water was finished she abandoned the child under a bush.	15 Cuando se acabó el agua que llevaba en el odre, puso al niño debajo de unos arbustos,
16 Then she went and sat down at a distance, about a bowshot away, thinking, 'I cannot bear to see thechild die.' Sitting at a distance, she began to sob.	16 y fue a sentarse aparte, a la distancia de un tiro de flecha, pensando: «Al menos no veré morir al niño». Y cuando estuvo sentada aparte, prorrumpió en sollozos.
17 God heard the boy crying, and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven. 'What is wrong,Hagar?' he asked. 'Do not be afraid, for God has heard the boy's cry in his plight.	17 Dios escuchó la voz del niño, y el Angel de Dios llamó a Agar desde el cielo: «¿Qué te pasa, Agar?», le dijo. «No temas, porque Dios ha oído la voz del niño que está ahí.
18 Go and pick the boy up and hold him safe, for I shal make him into a great nation.'	18 Levántate, alza al niño y estréchalo bien en tus brazos, porque yo haré de él una gran nación».
19 Then God opened Hagar's eyes and she saw a well, so she went and fil ed the skin with water andgave the boy a drink.	19 En seguida Dios le abrió los ojos, y ella divisó un pozo de agua. Fue entonces a llenar el odre con agua y dio de beber al niño.
20 God was with the boy. He grew up and made his home in the desert, and he became an archer.	20 Dios acompañaba al niño y este fue creciendo. Su morada era el desierto, y se convirtió en un arquero experimentado.
21 He made his home in the desert of Paran, and his mother got him a wife from Egypt.	21 Vivió en el desierto de Parán, y su madre lo casó con una mujer egipcia.
22 About then, Abimelech and Phicol, the commander of his army, said to Abraham, 'Since God is withyou in everything you do,	22 Por aquel tiempo, Abimélec, que iba acompañado de Picol, el jefe de su ejército, dijo a Abraham: «Dios está contigo en todo lo que haces.
23 swear to me by God, here and now, that you wil not act treacherously towards me or my kith andkin, but behave with the same faithful love to me and the land of which you are a guest as I have behaved toyou.'	23 Júrame por Dios aquí mismo, que nunca te vas a comportar falsamente conmigo o con mi estirpe o mi posteridad, y que nos vas a dar, a mí y al país donde resides, las mismas pruebas de lealtad que yo te he dado».
24 'Yes,' Abraham replied, 'I swear it.'	24 Abraham respondió: «Lo juro».
25 Abraham then reproached Abimelech about a well that Abimelech's servants had seized.	25 Pero Abraham presentó una queja a Abimélec, a causa de un pozo que los servidores de Abimélec habían tomado por la fuerza.
26 'I do not know who has done this,' Abimelech said. 'You yourself have never mentioned it to me and,for myself, I heard nothing of it til today.'	26 Este replicó: «No tengo idea de quién pudo haber hecho esto. Tú no me lo hiciste saber, y hasta ahora yo no me había enterado de nada».
27 Abraham then took sheep and cattle and presented them to Abimelech, and the two of them made acovenant.	27 Entonces Abraham regaló a Abimélec unas ovejas y unas vacas, y los dos hicieron una alianza.
28 Abraham put seven lambs of the flock on one side.	28 Y como Abraham puso aparte siete corderas del rebaño,
29 'Why have you put these seven lambs on one side?' Abimelech asked Abraham.	29 Abimélec le preguntó: «¿Qué significan esas siete corderas que pusiste aparte?».
30 He replied, 'You must accept these seven lambs from me as evidence that I have dug this wel .'	30 «Significan –respondió Abraham– que tú me vas a aceptar estas siete corderas como una prueba de que el pozo lo he cavado yo».
31 This was why the place was cal ed Beersheba: because there the two of them swore an oath.	31 Y a aquel lugar se lo llamó Berseba, que significa «pozo del juramento», porque allí los dos prestaron un juramento.
32 After they had made a covenant at Beersheba, Abimelech and Phicol, the commander of his army,left and went back to Philistine territory.	32 Después de concluida la alianza, Abimélec partió junto con Picol, el jefe de su ejército, y regresó al país de los filisteos.
33 And Abraham planted a tamarisk at Beersheba and there he invoked the name of Yahweh.	33 Abraham, por su parte, plantó un tamarisco en Berseba e invocó el nombre del Señor Dios, el Eterno.
34 Abraham stayed for a long while in Philistine territory.	34 El permaneció largo tiempo en el país de los filisteos.
