Genesis 16

NEW JERUSALEM	STUTTGARTENSIA-DELITZSCH
1 Abram's wife Sarai had borne him no child, but she had an Egyptian slave-girl cal ed Hagar.	1 וְשָׂרַי אֵשֶׁת אַבְרָם לֹא יָלְדָה לֹו וְלָהּ שִׁפְחָה מִצְרִית וּשְׁמָהּ הָגָר
2 So Sarai said to Abram, 'Listen, now! Since Yahweh has kept me from having children, go to myslave-girl. Perhaps I shal get children through her.' And Abram took Sarai's advice.	2 וַתֹּאמֶר שָׂרַי אֶל־אַבְרָם הִנֵּה־נָא עֲצָרַנִי יְהוָה מִלֶּדֶת בֹּא־נָא אֶל־שִׁפְחָתִי אוּלַי אִבָּנֶה מִמֵּנָּה וַיִּשְׁמַע אַבְרָם לְקֹול שָׂרָי
3 Thus, after Abram had lived in the land of Canaan for ten years, Sarai took Hagar her Egyptian slave-girl and gave her to Abram as his wife.	3 וַתִּקַּח שָׂרַי אֵשֶׁת־אַבְרָם אֶת־הָגָר הַמִּצְרִית שִׁפְחָתָהּ מִקֵּץ עֶשֶׂר שָׁנִים לְשֶׁבֶת אַבְרָם בְּאֶרֶץ כְּנָעַן וַתִּתֵּן אֹתָהּ לְאַבְרָם אִישָׁהּ לֹו לְאִשָּׁה
4 He went to Hagar and she conceived. And once she knew she had conceived, her mistress countedfor nothing in her eyes.	4 וַיָּבֹא אֶל־הָגָר וַתַּהַר וַתֵּרֶא כִּי הָרָתָה וַתֵּקַל גְּבִרְתָּהּ בְּעֵינֶיהָ
5 Then Sarai said to Abram, 'This outrage done to me is your fault! It was I who put my slave-girl intoyour arms but, now she knows that she has conceived, I count for nothing in her eyes. Yahweh judge betweenme and you!'	5 וַתֹּאמֶר שָׂרַי אֶל־אַבְרָם חֲמָסִי עָלֶיךָ אָנֹכִי נָתַתִּי שִׁפְחָתִי בְּחֵיקֶךָ וַתֵּרֶא כִּי הָרָתָה וָאֵקַל בְּעֵינֶיהָ יִשְׁפֹּט יְהוָה בֵּינִי וּבֵינֶיךָ
6 'Very wel ,' Abram said to Sarai, 'your slave-girl is at your disposal. Treat her as you think fit.' Saraiaccordingly treated her so badly that she ran away from her.	6 וַיֹּאמֶר אַבְרָם אֶל־שָׂרַי הִנֵּה שִׁפְחָתֵךְ בְּיָדֵךְ עֲשִׂי־לָהּ הַטֹּוב בְּעֵינָיִךְ וַתְּעַנֶּהָ שָׂרַי וַתִּבְרַח מִפָּנֶיהָ
7 The angel of Yahweh found her by a spring in the desert, the spring on the road to Shur.	7 וַיִּמְצָאָהּ מַלְאַךְ יְהוָה עַל־עֵין הַמַּיִם בַּמִּדְבָּר עַל־הָעַיִן בְּדֶרֶךְ שׁוּר
8 He said, 'Hagar, slave-girl of Sarai, where have you come from, and where are you going?' 'I amrunning away from my mistress Sarai,' she replied.	8 וַיֹּאמַר הָגָר שִׁפְחַת שָׂרַי אֵי־מִזֶּה בָאת וְאָנָה תֵלֵכִי וַתֹּאמֶר מִפְּנֵי שָׂרַי גְּבִרְתִּי אָנֹכִי בֹּרַחַת
9 The angel of Yahweh said to her, 'Go back to your mistress and submit to her.'	9 וַיֹּאמֶר לָהּ מַלְאַךְ יְהוָה שׁוּבִי אֶל־גְּבִרְתֵּךְ וְהִתְעַנִּי תַּחַת יָדֶיהָ
10 The angel of Yahweh further said to her, 'I shal make your descendants too numerous to becounted.'	10 וַיֹּאמֶר לָהּ מַלְאַךְ יְהוָה הַרְבָּה אַרְבֶּה אֶת־זַרְעֵךְ וְלֹא יִסָּפֵר מֵרֹב
11 Then the angel of Yahweh said to her: Now, you have conceived and will bear a son, and you shalname him Ishmael, for Yahweh has heard your cries of distress.	11 וַיֹּאמֶר לָהּ מַלְאַךְ יְהוָה הִנָּךְ הָרָה וְיֹלַדְתְּ בֵּן וְקָרָאת שְׁמֹו יִשְׁמָעֵאל כִּי־שָׁמַע יְהוָה אֶל־עָנְיֵךְ
12 A wild donkey of a man he wil be, his hand against every man, and every man's hand against him,living his life in defiance of al his kinsmen.	12 וְהוּא יִהְיֶה פֶּרֶא אָדָם יָדֹו בַכֹּל וְיַד כֹּל בֹּו וְעַל־פְּנֵי כָל־אֶחָיו יִשְׁכֹּן
13 Hagar gave a name to Yahweh who had spoken to her, 'You are El Roi,' by which she meant, 'Did Inot go on seeing here, after him who sees me?'	13 וַתִּקְרָא שֵׁם־יְהוָה הַדֹּבֵר אֵלֶיהָ אַתָּה אֵל רֳאִי כִּי אָמְרָה הֲגַם הֲלֹם רָאִיתִי אַחֲרֵי רֹאִי
14 This is why the well is cal ed the wel of Lahai Roi; it is between Kadesh and Bered.	14 עַל־כֵּן קָרָא לַבְּאֵר בְּאֵר לַחַי רֹאִי הִנֵּה בֵין־קָדֵשׁ וּבֵין בָּרֶד
15 Hagar bore Abram a son, and Abram gave his son borne by Hagar the name Ishmael.	15 וַתֵּלֶד הָגָר לְאַבְרָם בֵּן וַיִּקְרָא אַבְרָם שֶׁם־בְּנֹו אֲשֶׁר־יָלְדָה הָגָר יִשְׁמָעֵאל
16 Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore him Ishmael.	16 וְאַבְרָם בֶּן־שְׁמֹנִים שָׁנָה וְשֵׁשׁ שָׁנִים בְּלֶדֶת־הָגָר אֶת־יִשְׁמָעֵאל לְאַבְרָם׃ ס
