Genesis 16

1 Abram's wife Sarai had borne him no child, but she had an Egyptian slave-girl cal ed Hagar.	1 ושרי אשת אברם לא ילדה לו ולה שפחה מצרית ושמה הגר
2 So Sarai said to Abram, 'Listen, now! Since Yahweh has kept me from having children, go to myslave-girl. Perhaps I shal get children through her.' And Abram took Sarai's advice.	2 ותאמר שרי אל אברם הנה נא עצרני יהוה מלדת בא נא אל שפחתי אולי אבנה ממנה וישמע אברם לקול שרי
3 Thus, after Abram had lived in the land of Canaan for ten years, Sarai took Hagar her Egyptian slave-girl and gave her to Abram as his wife.	3 ותקח שרי אשת אברם את הגר המצרית שפחתה מקץ עשר שנים לשבת אברם בארץ כנען ותתן אתה לאברם אישה לו לאשה
4 He went to Hagar and she conceived. And once she knew she had conceived, her mistress countedfor nothing in her eyes.	4 ויבא אל הגר ותהר ותרא כי הרתה ותקל גברתה בעיניה
5 Then Sarai said to Abram, 'This outrage done to me is your fault! It was I who put my slave-girl intoyour arms but, now she knows that she has conceived, I count for nothing in her eyes. Yahweh judge betweenme and you!'	5 ותאמר שרי אל אברם חמסי עליך אנכי נתתי שפחתי בחיקך ותרא כי הרתה ואקל בעיניה ישפט יהוה ביני וביניך
6 'Very wel ,' Abram said to Sarai, 'your slave-girl is at your disposal. Treat her as you think fit.' Saraiaccordingly treated her so badly that she ran away from her.	6 ויאמר אברם אל שרי הנה שפחתך בידך עשי לה הטוב בעיניך ותענה שרי ותברח מפניה
7 The angel of Yahweh found her by a spring in the desert, the spring on the road to Shur.	7 וימצאה מלאך יהוה על עין המים במדבר על העין בדרך שור
8 He said, 'Hagar, slave-girl of Sarai, where have you come from, and where are you going?' 'I amrunning away from my mistress Sarai,' she replied.	8 ויאמר הגר שפחת שרי אי מזה באת ואנה תלכי ותאמר מפני שרי גברתי אנכי ברחת
9 The angel of Yahweh said to her, 'Go back to your mistress and submit to her.'	9 ויאמר לה מלאך יהוה שובי אל גברתך והתעני תחת ידיה
10 The angel of Yahweh further said to her, 'I shal make your descendants too numerous to becounted.'	10 ויאמר לה מלאך יהוה הרבה ארבה את זרעך ולא יספר מרב
11 Then the angel of Yahweh said to her: Now, you have conceived and will bear a son, and you shalname him Ishmael, for Yahweh has heard your cries of distress.	11 ויאמר לה מלאך יהוה הנך הרה וילדת בן וקראת שמו ישמעאל כי שמע יהוה אל עניך
12 A wild donkey of a man he wil be, his hand against every man, and every man's hand against him,living his life in defiance of al his kinsmen.	12 והוא יהיה פרא אדם ידו בכל ויד כל בו ועל פני כל אחיו ישכן
13 Hagar gave a name to Yahweh who had spoken to her, 'You are El Roi,' by which she meant, 'Did Inot go on seeing here, after him who sees me?'	13 ותקרא שם יהוה הדבר אליה אתה אל ראי כי אמרה הגם הלם ראיתי אחרי ראי
14 This is why the well is cal ed the wel of Lahai Roi; it is between Kadesh and Bered.	14 על כן קרא לבאר באר לחי ראי הנה בין קדש ובין ברד
15 Hagar bore Abram a son, and Abram gave his son borne by Hagar the name Ishmael.	15 ותלד הגר לאברם בן ויקרא אברם שם בנו אשר ילדה הגר ישמעאל
16 Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore him Ishmael.	16 ואברם בן שמנים שנה ושש שנים בלדת הגר את ישמעאל לאברם
