NEW JERUSALEMDOUAI-RHEIMS
Abram's wife Sarai had borne him no child, but she had an Egyptian slave-girl cal ed Hagar.1 Now Sarai the wife of Abram, had brought forth no children; having a handmaid, an Egyptian, named Agar,
So Sarai said to Abram, 'Listen, now! Since Yahweh has kept me from having children, go to myslave-girl. Perhaps I shal get children through her.' And Abram took Sarai's advice.2 She said to her husband: Behold, the Lord hath restrained me from bearing: go in unto my handmaid, it may be I may have children of her at least. And when he agreed to her request,
Thus, after Abram had lived in the land of Canaan for ten years, Sarai took Hagar her Egyptian slave-girl and gave her to Abram as his wife.3 She took Agar the Egyptian her handmaid, ten years after they first dwelt in the land of Chanaan, and gave her to her husband to wife.
He went to Hagar and she conceived. And once she knew she had conceived, her mistress countedfor nothing in her eyes.4 And he went in to her. But she, perceiving that she was with child, despised her mistress.
Then Sarai said to Abram, 'This outrage done to me is your fault! It was I who put my slave-girl intoyour arms but, now she knows that she has conceived, I count for nothing in her eyes. Yahweh judge betweenme and you!'5 And Sarai said to Abram: Thou dost unjustly with me: I gave my handmaid into thy bosom, and she perceiving herself to be with child, despiseth me. The Lord judge between me and thee.
'Very wel ,' Abram said to Sarai, 'your slave-girl is at your disposal. Treat her as you think fit.' Saraiaccordingly treated her so badly that she ran away from her.6 And Abram made answer, and said to her: Behold thy handmaid is in thy own hand, use her its it pleaseth thee. And when Sarai afflicted her, she ran away.
The angel of Yahweh found her by a spring in the desert, the spring on the road to Shur.7 And the angel of the Lord having found her, by a fountain of water in the wilderness, which is in the way to Sur in the desert,
He said, 'Hagar, slave-girl of Sarai, where have you come from, and where are you going?' 'I amrunning away from my mistress Sarai,' she replied.8 He said to her: Agar, handmaid of Sarai, whence comest thou? and whither goest thou? And she answered: I flee from the face of Sarai, my mistress.
The angel of Yahweh said to her, 'Go back to your mistress and submit to her.'9 And the angel of the Lord said to her: Return to thy mistress, and humble thyself under her hand.
The angel of Yahweh further said to her, 'I shal make your descendants too numerous to becounted.'10 And again he said: I will multiply thy seed exceedingly, and it shall not be numbered for multitude.
Then the angel of Yahweh said to her: Now, you have conceived and will bear a son, and you shalname him Ishmael, for Yahweh has heard your cries of distress.11 And again: Behold, said he, thou art with child, and thou shalt bring forth a son: and thou shalt call his name Ismael, because the Lord hath heard thy affliction.
A wild donkey of a man he wil be, his hand against every man, and every man's hand against him, living his life in defiance of al his kinsmen.12 He shall be a wild man: his hand will be against all men, and all men's hands against him: and he shall pitch his tents over against all his brethren.
Hagar gave a name to Yahweh who had spoken to her, 'You are El Roi,' by which she meant, 'Did Inot go on seeing here, after him who sees me?'13 And she called the name of the Lord that spoke unto her: Thou the God who hast seen me. For she said: Verily here have I seen the hinder parts of him that seeth me.
This is why the well is cal ed the wel of Lahai Roi; it is between Kadesh and Bered.14 Therefore she called that well, The well of him that liveth and seeth me. The same is between Cades and Bared.
Hagar bore Abram a son, and Abram gave his son borne by Hagar the name Ishmael.15 And Agar brought forth a son to Abram: who called his name Ismael.
Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore him Ishmael.16 Abram was fourscore and six years old when Agar brought him forth Ismael.
