NEW AMERICAN BIBLENEW JERUSALEM
If then you were raised with Christ, seek what is above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God.1 Since you have been raised up to be with Christ, you must look for the things that are above, whereChrist is, sitting at God's right hand.
Think of what is above, not of what is on earth.2 Let your thoughts be on things above, not on the things that are on the earth,
For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.3 because you have died, and now the life you have is hidden with Christ in God.
When Christ your life appears, then you too will appear with him in glory.4 But when Christ is revealed -- and he is your life-you, too, wil be revealed with him in glory.
Put to death, then, the parts of you that are earthly: immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and the greed that is idolatry.5 That is why you must kill everything in you that is earthly: sexual vice, impurity, uncontrol ed passion,evil desires and especially greed, which is the same thing as worshipping a false god;
Because of these the wrath of God is coming (upon the disobedient).6 it is precisely these things which draw God's retribution upon those who resist.
By these you too once conducted yourselves, when you lived in that way.7 And these things made up your way of life when you were living among such people,
But now you must put them all away: anger, fury, malice, slander, and obscene language out of your mouths.8 but now you also must give up al these things: human anger, hot temper, malice, abusive language anddirty talk;
Stop lying to one another, since you have taken off the old self with its practices9 and do not lie to each other. You have stripped off your old behaviour with your old self,
and have put on the new self, which is being renewed, for knowledge, in the image of its creator.10 and you have put on a new self which will progress towards true knowledge the more it is renewed inthe image of its Creator;
Here there is not Greek and Jew, circumcision and uncircumcision, barbarian, Scythian, slave, free; but Christ is all and in all.11 and in that image there is no room for distinction between Greek and Jew, between the circumcisedand uncircumcised, or between barbarian and Scythian, slave and free. There is only Christ: he is everythingand he is in everything.
Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, heartfelt compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience,12 As the chosen of God, then, the holy people whom he loves, you are to be clothed in heartfeltcompassion, in generosity and humility, gentleness and patience.
bearing with one another and forgiving one another, if one has a grievance against another; as the Lord has forgiven you, so must you also do.13 Bear with one another; forgive each other if one of you has a complaint against another. The Lord hasforgiven you; now you must do the same.
And over all these put on love, that is, the bond of perfection.14 Over al these clothes, put on love, the perfect bond.
And let the peace of Christ control your hearts, the peace into which you were also called in one body. And be thankful.15 And may the peace of Christ reign in your hearts, because it is for this that you were cal ed together inone body. Always be thankful.
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, as in all wisdom you teach and admonish one another, singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God.16 Let the Word of Christ, in al its richness, find a home with you. Teach each other, and advise eachother, in al wisdom. With gratitude in your hearts sing psalms and hymns and inspired songs to God;
And whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.17 and whatever you say or do, let it be in the name of the Lord Jesus, in thanksgiving to God the Fatherthrough him.
Wives, be subordinate to your husbands, as is proper in the Lord.18 Wives, be subject to your husbands, as you should in the Lord.
Husbands, love your wives, and avoid any bitterness toward them.19 Husbands, love your wives and do not be sharp with them.
Children, obey your parents in everything, for this is pleasing to the Lord.20 Children, be obedient to your parents always, because that is what will please the Lord.
Fathers, do not provoke your children, so they may not become discouraged.21 Parents, do not irritate your children or they will lose heart.
Slaves, obey your human masters in everything, not only when being watched, as currying favor, but in simplicity of heart, fearing the Lord.22 Slaves, be obedient in every way to the people who, according to human reckoning, are your masters;not only when you are under their eye, as if you had only to please human beings, but wholeheartedly, out ofrespect for the Master.
Whatever you do, do from the heart, as for the Lord and not for others,23 Whatever your work is, put your heart into it as done for the Lord and not for human beings,
knowing that you will receive from the Lord the due payment of the inheritance; be slaves of the Lord Christ.24 knowing that the Lord wil repay you by making you his heirs. It is Christ the Lord that you are serving.
For the wrongdoer will receive recompense for the wrong he committed, and there is no partiality.25 Anyone who does wrong wil be repaid in kind. For there is no favouritism.
