1 In those days when there again was a great crowd without anything to eat, he summoned the disciples and said,	1 In those days, when again a great crowd had gathered, and they had nothing to eat, he called his disciples to him, and said to them,
2 "My heart is moved with pity for the crowd, because they have been with me now for three days and have nothing to eat.	2 "I have compassion on the crowd, because they have been with me now three days, and have nothing to eat;
3 If I send them away hungry to their homes, they will collapse on the way, and some of them have come a great distance."	3 and if I send them away hungry to their homes, they will faint on the way; and some of them have come a long way."
4 His disciples answered him, "Where can anyone get enough bread to satisfy them here in this deserted place?"	4 And his disciples answered him, "How can one feed these men with bread here in the desert?"
5 Still he asked them, "How many loaves do you have?" "Seven," they replied.	5 And he asked them, "How many loaves have you?" They said, "Seven."
6 He ordered the crowd to sit down on the ground. Then, taking the seven loaves he gave thanks, broke them, and gave them to his disciples to distribute, and they distributed them to the crowd.	6 And he commanded the crowd to sit down on the ground; and he took the seven loaves, and having given thanks he broke them and gave them to his disciples to set before the people; and they set them before the crowd.
7 They also had a few fish. He said the blessing over them and ordered them distributed also.	7 And they had a few small fish; and having blessed them, he commanded that these also should be set before them.
8 They ate and were satisfied. They picked up the fragments left over--seven baskets.	8 And they ate, and were satisfied; and they took up the broken pieces left over, seven baskets full.
9 There were about four thousand people. He dismissed them	9 And there were about four thousand people.
10 and got into the boat with his disciples and came to the region of Dalmanutha.	10 And he sent them away; and immediately he got into the boat with his disciples, and went to the district of Dalmanutha.

12 He sighed from the depth of his spirit and said, "Why does this generation seek a sign? Amen, I say to you, no sign will be given to this generation."	12 And he sighed deeply in his spirit, and said, "Why does this generation seek a sign? 13 Then he left them, got into the boat again, and went off to the other shore.	13 And he left them, and getting into the boat again he departed to the other side.
14 They had forgotten to bring bread, and they had only one loaf with them in the boat.	14 Now they had forgotten to bring bread; and they had only one loaf with them in the boat.
15 He enjoined them, "Watch out, guard against the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod."	15 And he cautioned them, saying, "Take heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod."
16 They concluded among themselves that it was because they had no bread.	16 And they discussed it with one another, saying, "We have no bread."
17 When he became aware of this he said to them, "Why do you conclude that it is because you have no bread? Do you not yet understand or comprehend? Are your hearts hardened?	17 And being aware of it, Jesus said to them, "Why do you discuss the fact that you have no bread? Do you not yet perceive or understand? Are your hearts hardened?
18 Do you have eyes and not see, ears and not hear? And do you not remember,	18 Having eyes do you not see, and having ears do you not hear? And do you not remember?
19 when I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many wicker baskets full of fragments you picked up?" They answered him, "Twelve."	19 When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?" They said to him, "Twelve."
20 "When I broke the seven loaves for the four thousand, how many full baskets of fragments did you pick up?" They answered (him), "Seven."	20 "And the seven for the four thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?" And they said to him, "Seven."
21 He said to them, "Do you still not understand?"	21 And he said to them, "Do you not yet understand?"
22 When they arrived at Bethsaida, they brought to him a blind man and begged him to touch him.	22 And they came to Beth-saida. And some people brought to him a blind man, and begged him to touch him.
23 He took the blind man by the hand and led him outside the village. Putting spittle on his eyes he laid his hands on him and asked, "Do you see anything?"	23 And he took the blind man by the hand, and led him out of the village; and when he had spit on his eyes and laid his hands upon him, he asked him, "Do you see anything?"
24 Looking up he replied, "I see people looking like trees and walking."	24 And he looked up and said, "I see men; but they look like trees, walking."
25 Then he laid hands on his eyes a second time and he saw clearly; his sight was restored and he could see everything distinctly.	25 Then again he laid his hands upon his eyes; and he looked intently and was restored, and saw everything clearly.
26 Then he sent him home and said, "Do not even go into the village."	26 And he sent him away to his home, saying, "Do not even enter the village."
27 Now Jesus and his disciples set out for the villages of Caesarea Philippi. Along the way he asked his disciples, "Who do people say that I am?"	27 And Jesus went on with his disciples, to the villages of Caesarea Philippi; and on the way he asked his disciples, "Who do men say that I am?"
28 They said in reply, "John the Baptist, others Elijah, still others one of the prophets."	28 And they told him, "John the Baptist; and others say, Elijah; and others one of the prophets."
29 And he asked them, "But who do you say that I am?" Peter said to him in reply, "You are the Messiah."	29 And he asked them, "But who do you say that I am?" Peter answered him, "You are the Christ."
30 Then he warned them not to tell anyone about him.	30 And he charged them to tell no one about him.
31 He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer greatly and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and rise after three days.	31 And he began to teach them that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again.
32 He spoke this openly. Then Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him.	32 And he said this plainly. And Peter took him, and began to rebuke him.
33 At this he turned around and, looking at his disciples, rebuked Peter and said, "Get behind me, Satan. You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do."	33 But turning and seeing his disciples, he rebuked Peter, and said, "Get behind me, Satan! For you are not on the side of God, but of men."
34 He summoned the crowd with his disciples and said to them, "Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.	34 And he called to him the multitude with his disciples, and said to them, "If any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.
35 For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and that of the gospel will save it.	35 For whoever would save his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel's will save it.
36 What profit is there for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life?	36 For what does it profit a man, to gain the whole world and forfeit his life?
37 What could one give in exchange for his life?	37 For what can a man give in return for his life?
38 Whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this faithless and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of when he comes in his Father's glory with the holy angels."	38 For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of man also be ashamed, when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels."
