NEW AMERICAN BIBLESAGRADA BIBLIA
When it was morning, all the chief priests and the elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death.1 Chegando a manhã, todos os príncipes dos sacerdotes e os anciãos do povo reuniram-se em conselho para entregar Jesus à morte.
They bound him, led him away, and handed him over to Pilate, the governor.2 Ligaram-no e o levaram ao governador Pilatos.
Then Judas, his betrayer, seeing that Jesus had been condemned, deeply regretted what he had done. He returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders,3 Judas, o traidor, vendo-o então condenado, tomado de remorsos, foi devolver aos príncipes dos sacerdotes e aos anciãos as trinta moedas de prata,
saying, "I have sinned in betraying innocent blood." They said, "What is that to us? Look to it yourself."4 dizendo-lhes: Pequei, entregando o sangue de um justo. Responderam-lhe: Que nos importa? Isto é lá contigo!
Flinging the money into the temple, he departed and went off and hanged himself.5 Ele jogou então no templo as moedas de prata, saiu e foi enforcar-se.
The chief priests gathered up the money, but said, "It is not lawful to deposit this in the temple treasury, for it is the price of blood."6 Os príncipes dos sacerdotes tomaram o dinheiro e disseram: Não é permitido lançá-lo no tesouro sagrado, porque se trata de preço de sangue.
After consultation, they used it to buy the potter's field as a burial place for foreigners.7 Depois de haverem deliberado, compraram com aquela soma o campo do Oleiro, para que ali se fizesse um cemitério de estrangeiros.
That is why that field even today is called the Field of Blood.8 Esta é a razão por que aquele terreno é chamado, ainda hoje, Campo de Sangue.
Then was fulfilled what had been said through Jeremiah the prophet, "And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the value of a man with a price on his head, a price set by some of the Israelites,9 Assim se cumpriu a profecia do profeta Jeremias: Eles receberam trinta moedas de prata, preço daquele cujo valor foi estimado pelos filhos de Israel;
and they paid it out for the potter's field just as the Lord had commanded me."10 e deram-no pelo campo do Oleiro, como o Senhor me havia prescrito.
Now Jesus stood before the governor, and he questioned him, "Are you the king of the Jews?" Jesus said, "You say so."11 Jesus compareceu diante do governador, que o interrogou: És o rei dos judeus? Sim, respondeu-lhe Jesus.
And when he was accused by the chief priests and elders, he made no answer.12 Ele, porém, nada respondia às acusações dos príncipes dos sacerdotes e dos anciãos.
Then Pilate said to him, "Do you not hear how many things they are testifying against you?"13 Perguntou-lhe Pilatos: Não ouves todos os testemunhos que levantam contra ti?
But he did not answer him one word, so that the governor was greatly amazed.14 Mas, para grande admiração do governador, não quis responder a nenhuma acusação.
Now on the occasion of the feast the governor was accustomed to release to the crowd one prisoner whom they wished.15 Era costume que o governador soltasse um preso a pedido do povo em cada festa de Páscoa.
And at that time they had a notorious prisoner called (Jesus) Barabbas.16 Ora, havia naquela ocasião um prisioneiro famoso, chamado Barrabás.
So when they had assembled, Pilate said to them, "Which one do you want me to release to you, (Jesus) Barabbas, or Jesus called Messiah?"17 Pilatos dirigiu-se ao povo reunido: Qual quereis que eu vos solte: Barrabás ou Jesus, que se chama Cristo?
For he knew that it was out of envy that they had handed him over.18 {Ele sabia que tinham entregue Jesus por inveja.}
While he was still seated on the bench, his wife sent him a message, "Have nothing to do with that righteous man. I suffered much in a dream today because of him."19 Enquanto estava sentado no tribunal, sua mulher lhe mandou dizer: Nada faças a esse justo. Fui hoje atormentada por um sonho que lhe diz respeito.
The chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowds to ask for Barabbas but to destroy Jesus.20 Mas os príncipes dos sacerdotes e os anciãos persuadiram o povo que pedisse a libertação de Barrabás e fizesse morrer Jesus.
The governor said to them in reply, "Which of the two do you want me to release to you?" They answered, "Barabbas!"21 O governador tomou então a palavra: Qual dos dois quereis que eu vos solte? Responderam: Barrabás!
Pilate said to them, "Then what shall I do with Jesus called Messiah?" They all said, "Let him be crucified!"22 Pilatos perguntou: Que farei então de Jesus, que é chamado o Cristo? Todos responderam: Seja crucificado!
But he said, "Why? What evil has he done?" They only shouted the louder, "Let him be crucified!"23 O governador tornou a perguntar: Mas que mal fez ele? E gritavam ainda mais forte: Seja crucificado!
When Pilate saw that he was not succeeding at all, but that a riot was breaking out instead, he took water and washed his hands in the sight of the crowd, saying, "I am innocent of this man's blood. Look to it yourselves."24 Pilatos viu que nada adiantava, mas que, ao contrário, o tumulto crescia. Fez com que lhe trouxessem água, lavou as mãos diante do povo e disse: Sou inocente do sangue deste homem. Isto é lá convosco!
And the whole people said in reply, "His blood be upon us and upon our children."25 E todo o povo respondeu: Caia sobre nós o seu sangue e sobre nossos filhos!
Then he released Barabbas to them, but after he had Jesus scourged, he handed him over to be crucified.26 Os soldados do governador conduziram Jesus para o pretório e rodearam-no com todo o pelotão.
Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus inside the praetorium and gathered the whole cohort around him.27 Arrancaram-lhe as vestes e colocaram-lhe um manto escarlate.
They stripped off his clothes and threw a scarlet military cloak about him.28 Depois, trançaram uma coroa de espinhos, meteram-lha na cabeça e puseram-lhe na mão uma vara. Dobrando os joelhos diante dele, diziam com escárnio: Salve, rei dos judeus!
Weaving a crown out of thorns, they placed it on his head, and a reed in his right hand. And kneeling before him, they mocked him, saying, "Hail, King of the Jews!"29 Cuspiam-lhe no rosto e, tomando da vara, davam-lhe golpes na cabeça.
They spat upon him and took the reed and kept striking him on the head.30 Depois de escarnecerem dele, tiraram-lhe o manto e entregaram-lhe as vestes. Em seguida, levaram-no para o crucificar.
And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the cloak, dressed him in his own clothes, and led him off to crucify him.31 Saindo, encontraram um homem de Cirene, chamado Simão, a quem obrigaram a levar a cruz de Jesus.
As they were going out, they met a Cyrenian named Simon; this man they pressed into service to carry his cross.32 Chegaram ao lugar chamado Gólgota, isto é, lugar do crânio.
And when they came to a place called Golgotha (which means Place of the Skull),33 Deram-lhe de beber vinho misturado com fel. Ele provou, mas se recusou a beber.
they gave Jesus wine to drink mixed with gall. But when he had tasted it, he refused to drink.34 Depois de o haverem crucificado, dividiram suas vestes entre si, tirando a sorte. Cumpriu-se assim a profecia do profeta: Repartiram entre si minhas vestes e sobre meu manto lançaram a sorte {Sl 21,19}.
After they had crucified him, they divided his garments by casting lots;35 Sentaram-se e montaram guarda.
then they sat down and kept watch over him there.36 Por cima de sua cabeça penduraram um escrito trazendo o motivo de sua crucificação: Este é Jesus, o rei dos judeus.
And they placed over his head the written charge against him: This is Jesus, the King of the Jews.37 Ao mesmo tempo foram crucificados com ele dois ladrões, um à sua direita e outro à sua esquerda.
Two revolutionaries were crucified with him, one on his right and the other on his left.38 Os que passavam o injuriavam, sacudiam a cabeça e diziam:
Those passing by reviled him, shaking their heads39 Tu, que destróis o templo e o reconstróis em três dias, salva-te a ti mesmo! Se és o Filho de Deus, desce da cruz!
and saying, "You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save yourself, if you are the Son of God, (and) come down from the cross!"40 Os príncipes dos sacerdotes, os escribas e os anciãos também zombavam dele:
Likewise the chief priests with the scribes and elders mocked him and said,41 Ele salvou a outros e não pode salvar-se a si mesmo! Se é rei de Israel, desça agora da cruz e nós creremos nele!
"He saved others; he cannot save himself. So he is the king of Israel! Let him come down from the cross now, and we will believe in him.42 Confiou em Deus, Deus o livre agora, se o ama, porque ele disse: Eu sou o Filho de Deus!
He trusted in God; let him deliver him now if he wants him. For he said, 'I am the Son of God.'"43 E os ladrões, crucificados com ele, também o ultrajavam.
The revolutionaries who were crucified with him also kept abusing him in the same way.44 Desde a hora sexta até a nona, cobriu-se toda a terra de trevas.
From noon onward, darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon.45 Próximo da hora nona, Jesus exclamou em voz forte: Eli, Eli, lammá sabactáni? - o que quer dizer: Meu Deus, meu Deus, por que me abandonaste?
And about three o'clock Jesus cried out in a loud voice, "Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?" which means, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"46 A estas palavras, alguns dos que lá estavam diziam: Ele chama por Elias.
Some of the bystanders who heard it said, "This one is calling for Elijah."47 Imediatamente um deles tomou uma esponja, embebeu-a em vinagre e apresentou-lha na ponta de uma vara para que bebesse.
Immediately one of them ran to get a sponge; he soaked it in wine, and putting it on a reed, gave it to him to drink.48 Os outros diziam: Deixa! Vejamos se Elias virá socorrê-lo.
But the rest said, "Wait, let us see if Elijah comes to save him."49 Jesus de novo lançou um grande brado, e entregou a alma.
But Jesus cried out again in a loud voice, and gave up his spirit.50 E eis que o véu do templo se rasgou em duas partes de alto a baixo, a terra tremeu, fenderam-se as rochas.
And behold, the veil of the sanctuary was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth quaked, rocks were split,51 Os sepulcros se abriram e os corpos de muitos justos ressuscitaram.
tombs were opened, and the bodies of many saints who had fallen asleep were raised.52 Saindo de suas sepulturas, entraram na Cidade Santa depois da ressurreição de Jesus e apareceram a muitas pessoas.
And coming forth from their tombs after his resurrection, they entered the holy city and appeared to many.53 O centurião e seus homens que montavam guarda a Jesus, diante do estremecimento da terra e de tudo o que se passava, disseram entre si, possuídos de grande temor: Verdadeiramente, este homem era Filho de Deus!
The centurion and the men with him who were keeping watch over Jesus feared greatly when they saw the earthquake and all that was happening, and they said, "Truly, this was the Son of God!"54 Havia ali também algumas mulheres que de longe olhavam; tinham seguido Jesus desde a Galiléia para o servir.
There were many women there, looking on from a distance, who had followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering to him.55 Entre elas se achavam Maria Madalena e Maria, mãe de Tiago e de José, e a mãe dos filhos de Zebedeu.
Among them were Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee.56 À tardinha, um homem rico de Arimatéia, chamado José, que era também discípulo de Jesus,
When it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea named Joseph, who was himself a disciple of Jesus.57 foi procurar Pilatos e pediu-lhe o corpo de Jesus. Pilatos cedeu-o.
He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus; then Pilate ordered it to be handed over.58 José tomou o corpo, envolveu-o num lençol branco
Taking the body, Joseph wrapped it (in) clean linen59 e o depositou num sepulcro novo, que tinha mandado talhar para si na rocha. Depois rolou uma grande pedra à entrada do sepulcro e foi-se embora.
and laid it in his new tomb that he had hewn in the rock. Then he rolled a huge stone across the entrance to the tomb and departed.60 Maria Madalena e a outra Maria ficaram lá, sentadas defronte do túmulo.
But Mary Magdalene and the other Mary remained sitting there, facing the tomb.61 No dia seguinte - isto é, o dia seguinte ao da Preparação -, os príncipes dos sacerdotes e os fariseus dirigiram-se todos juntos à casa de Pilatos.
The next day, the one following the day of preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered before Pilate62 E disseram-lhe: Senhor, nós nos lembramos de que aquele impostor disse, enquanto vivia: Depois de três dias ressuscitarei.
and said, "Sir, we remember that this impostor while still alive said, 'After three days I will be raised up.'63 Ordena, pois, que seu sepulcro seja guardado até o terceiro dia. Os seus discípulos poderiam vir roubar o corpo e dizer ao povo: Ressuscitou dos mortos. E esta última impostura seria pior que a primeira.
Give orders, then, that the grave be secured until the third day, lest his disciples come and steal him and say to the people, 'He has been raised from the dead.' This last imposture would be worse than the first."64 Respondeu Pilatos: Tendes uma guarda. Ide e guardai-o como o entendeis.
Pilate said to them, "The guard is yours; go secure it as best you can."65 Foram, pois, e asseguraram o sepulcro, selando a pedra e colocando guardas.
So they went and secured the tomb by fixing a seal to the stone and setting the guard.
