1 the LORD said to Moses and Eleazar; son of Aaron the priest,1 After this plague, Yahweh spoke to Moses and to the priest Eleazar son of Aaron and said:
2 "Take a census, by ancestral houses, throughout the community of the Israelites of all those of twenty years or more who are fit for military service in Israel."2 'Take a census of the whole community of Israelites, by families: al those of twenty years and over, fitto bear arms in Israel.'
3 So on the plains of Moab along the Jericho stretch of the Jordan, Moses and the priest Eleazar registered3 So Moses and the priest Eleazar took a census of them on the Plains of Moab, near the Jordan byJericho. They counted
4 those of twenty years or more, as the LORD had commanded Moses. The Israelites who came out of the land of Egypt were as follows:4 (as Yahweh had ordered Moses and the Israelites after leaving Egypt) men of twenty years and over:
5 Of Reuben, the first-born of Israel, the Reubenites by clans were: through Hanoch the clan of the Hanochites, through Pallu the clan of the Palluites,5 Reuben, the first-born of Israel. The sons of Reuben: for Hanoch, the Hanochite clan; for Pal u, thePal uite clan;
6 through Hezron the clan of the Hezronites, through Carmi the clan of the Carmites.6 for Hezron, the Hezronite clan; for Carmi, the Carmite clan.
7 These were the clans of the Reubenites, of whom forty-three thousand seven hundred and thirty men were registered.7 These were the Reubenite clans. They numbered forty-three thousand seven hundred and thirty men.
8 From Pallu descended Eliab,8 The sons of Pallu: Eliab.
9 and the descendants of Eliab were Dathan and Abiram-the same Dathan and Abiram, councilors of the community, who revolted against Moses and Aaron (like Korah's band when it rebelled against the LORD).9 The sons of Eliab: Nemuel, Dathan and Abiram. These two, Dathan and Abiram, men of repute in thecommunity, were the ones who revolted against Moses and Aaron; they belonged to Korah's group when itrevolted against Yahweh.
10 The earth opened its mouth and swallowed them as a warning (Korah too and the band that died when the fire consumed two hundred and fifty men.10 The earth opened its mouth and swallowed them (with Korah when that group perished), when fireconsumed the two hundred and fifty men. They were a sign.
11 The descendents of Korah, however, did not die out).11 Korah's sons, however, did not perish.
12 The Simeonites by clans were: through Nemuel the clan of the Nemuelites, through Jamin the clan of the Jaminites, through Jachin the clan of the Jachinites,12 The sons of Simeon by clans: for Nemuel, the Nemuelite clan; for Jamin, the Jaminite clan; forJachin, the Jachinite clan;
13 through Sohar the clan of the Soharites, through Shaul the clan of the Shaulites.13 for Zerah, the Zerahite clan; for Shaul, the Shaulite clan.
14 These were the clans of the Simeonites, of whom twenty-two thousand two hundred men were registered.14 These were the Simeonite clans. They numbered twenty-two thousand two hundred men.
15 The Gadites by clans were: through Zephon the clan of the Zephonites, through Haggi the clan of the Haggites, through Shuni the clan of the Shunites,15 The sons of Gad by clans: for Zephon, the Zephonite clan; for Haggi, the Haggite clan; for Shuni, theShunite clan;
16 through Ozni the clan of the Oznites, through Eri the clan of the Erites,16 for Ozni, the Oznite clan; for Eri, the Erite clan;
17 through Arod the clan of the Arodites, through Areli the clan of the Arelites.17 for Arod, the Arodite clan; for Areli, the Arelite clan.
18 These were the clans of the Gadites, of whom forty thousand five hundred men were registered.18 These were the clans of the sons of Gad. They numbered forty thousand five hundred men.
19 The sons of Judah who died in the land of Canaan were Er and Onan.19 The sons of Judah: Er and Onan. Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan.
20 The Judahites by clans were: through Shelah the clan of the Shelahites, through Perez the clan of the Perezites, through Zerah the clan of the Zerahites.20 The other sons of Judah became clans: for Shelah, the Shelahite clan; for Perez, the Perezzite clan;for Zerah, the Zerahite clan.
21 The Perezites were: through Hezron the clan of the Hezronites, through Hamul the clan of the Hamulites.21 The sons of Perez were: for Hezron, the Hezronite clan; for Hamul, the Hamulite clan.
22 These were the clans of Judah, of whom seventy-six thousand five hundred men were registered.22 These were the clans of Judah. They numbered seventy-six thousand five hundred men.
23 The Issacharites by clans were: through Tola the clan of the Tolaites, through Puvah the clan of the Puvahites,23 The sons of Issachar by clans: for Tola, the Tolaite clan; for Puvah, the Puvahite clan;
24 through Jashub the clan of the Jashubites, through Shimron the clan of the Shimronites.24 for Jashub, the Jashubite clan; for Shimron, the Shimronite clan.
25 These were the clans of Issachar, of whom sixty-four thousand three hundred men were registered.25 These were the clans of Issachar. They numbered sixty-four thousand three hundred men.
26 The Zebulunites by clans were: through Sered the clan of the Seredites, through Elon the clan of the Elonites, through Jahleel the clan of the Jahleelites.26 The sons of Zebulun by clans: for Sered, the Seredite clan; for Elon, the Elonite clan; for Jahleel, theJahleelite clan.
27 These were the clans of the Zebulunites, of whom sixty thousand five hundred men were registered.27 These were the clans of Zebulun. They numbered sixty thousand five hundred men.
28 The sons of Joseph were Manasseh and Ephraim.28 The sons of Joseph by clans: Manasseh and Ephraim.
29 The Manassehites by clans were: through Machir the clan of the Machirites, through Gilead, a descendant of Machir, the clan of the Gileadites.29 The sons of Manasseh: for Machir, the Machirite clan; Machir fathered Gilead: for Gilead, theGileadite clan.
30 The Gileadites were: through Abiezer the clan of the Abiezrites, through Helek the clan of the Helekites,30 These were the sons of Gilead: for Iezer, the Iezerite clan; for Helek, the Helekite clan;
31 through Asriel the clan of the Asrielites, through Shechem the clan of the Shechemites,31 Asriel, the Asrielite clan; Shechem, the Shechemite clan;
32 through Shemida the clan of the Shemidaites, through Hepher the clan of the Hepherites.32 Shemida, the Shemidaite clan; Hepher, the Hepherite clan.
33 Zelophehad, son of Hepher, had no sons, but only daughters, whose names were Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah and Tirzah.33 Zelophehad son of Hepher had no sons, only daughters; the names of Zelophehad's daughterswere Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah and Tirzah.
34 These were the clans of Manasseh, of whom fifty-two thousand seven hundred men were registered.34 These were the clans of Manasseh. They numbered fifty-two thousand seven hundred men.
35 The Ephraimites by clans were: through Shuthelah the clan of the Shuthelahites, through Becher the clan of the Bechrites, through Tahan the clan of the Tahanites.35 These were the sons of Ephraim by clans: for Shuthelah, the Shuthelahite clan; for Becher, theBecherite clan; for Tahan, the Tahanite clan.
36 The Shuthelahites were: through Eran the clan of the Eranites.36 These were the sons of Shuthelah: for Eran, the Eranite clan.
37 These were the clans of the Ephraimites, of whom thirty-two thousand five hundred men were registered. These were the descendants of Joseph by clans.37 These were the clans of Ephraim. They numbered thirty-two thousand five hundred men. Thesewere the sons of Joseph by clans.
38 The Benjaminites by clans were: through Bela the clan of the Belaites, through Ashbel the clan of the Ashbelites, through Ahiram the clan of the Ahiramites,38 The sons of Benjamin by clans: for Bela, the Belaite clan; for Ashbel, the Ashbelite clan; for Ahiram,the Ahiramite clan;
39 through Shupham the clan of the Shuphamites, through Hupham the clan of the Huphamites.39 for Shephupham, the Shephuphamite clan; for Hupham, the Huphamite clan.
40 The descendants of Bela were Arad and Naaman: through Arad the clan of the Aradites, through Naaman the clan of the Naamanites.40 Bela's sons were Ard and Naaman; for Ard, the Ardite clan; for Naaman, the Naamanite clan.
41 These were the Benjaminites by clans, of whom forty-five thousand six hundred men were registered.41 These were the sons of Benjamin by clans. They numbered forty-five thousand six hundred men.
42 The Danites by clans were: through Shuham the clan of the Shuhamites. These were the clans of Dan,42 These were the sons of Dan by clans: for Shuham, the Shuhamite clan. These were the sons of Danby clans.
43 of whom sixty-four thousand four hundred men were registered.43 All the Shuhamite clans numbered sixty-four thousand four hundred men.
44 The Asherites by clans were: through Imnah the clan of the Imnites, through Ishvi the clan of the Ishvites, through Beriah the clan of the Beriites,44 The sons of Asher by clans: for Imnah, the Imnahite clan; for Ishvi, the Ishvihite clan; for Beriah, theBeriahite clan.
45 through Heber the clan of the Heberites, through Malchiel the clan of the Malchielites.45 For the sons of Beriah: for Heber, the Heberite clan; for Malchiel, the Malchielite clan.
46 The name of Asher's daughter was Serah.46 The daughter of Asher was called Serah.
47 These were the clans of Asher, of whom fifty-three thousand four hundred men were registered.47 These were the clans of Asher. They numbered fifty-three thousand four hundred men.
48 The Naphtalites by clans were: through Jahzeel the clan of the Jahzeelites, through Guni the clan of the Gunites,48 The sons of Naphtali by clans: for Jahzeel, the Jahzeelite clan; for Guni, the Gunite clan;
49 through Jezer the clan of the Jezerites, through Shillem the clan of the Shillemites.49 for Jezer, the Jezerite clan; for Shil em, the Shil emite clan.
50 These were the clans of Naphtali, of whom forty-five thousand four hundred men were registered.50 These were the clans of Naphtali as divided into clans. The sons of Naphtali numbered forty-fivethousand four hundred men.
51 These six hundred and one thousand seven hundred and thirty were the Israelites who were registered.51 Of the Israelites thus numbered, there were six hundred and one thousand seven hundred and thirtymen.
52 The LORD said to Moses,52 Yahweh then spoke to Moses and said,
53 "Among these groups the land shall be divided as their heritage in keeping with the number of individuals in each group.53 'The country must be shared out among these as a heritage, proportionately to the number of thoseinscribed.
54 To a large group you shall assign a large heritage, to a small group a small heritage, each group receiving its heritage in proportion to the number of men registered in it.54 To the large in number you wil give a large area of land, to the smal in number a small area; toeach the heritage wil be in proportion to the number registered.
55 But the land shall be divided by lot, as the heritage of the various ancestral tribes.55 The sharing out of the country must, however, be done by lot. Each wil receive a heritageproportionate to the number of names in their patriarchal tribes;
56 As the lot falls shall each group, large or small, be assigned its heritage."56 the heritage of each tribe wil be shared out by lot, depending on its larger or smal er numbers.'
57 The Levites registered by clans were: through Gershon the clan of the Gershonites, through Kohath the clan of the Kohathites, through Merari the clan of the Merarites.57 These, by clans, are the Levites that were registered: for Gershon, the Gershonite clan; for Kohath,the Kohathite clan; for Merari, the Merarite clan.
58 These also were clans of Levi: the clan of the Libnites, the clan of the Hebronites, the clan of the Mahlites, the clan of the Mushites, the clan of the Korahites. Among the descendants of Kohath was Amram,58 These are the Levite clans: the Libnite clan, the Hebronite clan, the Mahlite clan, the Mushite clan,the Korahite clan. Kohath fathered Amram.
59 whose wife was named Jochebed. She also was of the tribe of Levi, born to the tribe in Egypt. To Amram she bore Aaron and Moses and their sister Miriam.59 Amram's wife was cal ed Jokebed daughter of Levi, born to him in Egypt. To Amram she boreAaron, Moses and Miriam their sister.
60 To Aaron were born Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar.60 Aaron fathered Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar.
61 But Nadab and Abihu died when they offered profane fire before the LORD.61 Nadab and Abihu died when they brought unauthorised fire before Yahweh.
62 The total number of male Levites one month or more of age, who were registered, was twenty-three thousand. They were not registered with the other Israelites, however, for no heritage was given them among the Israelites.62 Altogether twenty-three thousand males of one month and over were registered. They were notregistered with the Israelites, since they were given no heritage with the Israelites.
63 These, then, were the men registered by Moses and the priest Eleazar in the census of the Israelites taken on the plains of Moab along the Jericho stretch of the Jordan.63 Such were the men registered by Moses and the priest Eleazar who took a census of the Israeliteson the Plains of Moab near the Jordan by Jericho.
64 Among them there was not a man of those who had been registered by Moses and the priest Aaron in the census of the Israelites taken in the desert of Sinai.64 Not one of them was among those whom Moses and the priest Aaron had registered when theycounted the Israelites in the desert of Sinai;
65 For the LORD had told them that they would surely die in the desert, and not one of them was left except Caleb, son of Jephunneh, and Joshua, son of Nun.65 for Yahweh had told them that these were to die in the desert and that none of them would be leftexcept Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.
