Sirach 12

NEW AMERICAN BIBLE	BIBBIA RICCIOTTI
1 If you do good, know for whom you are doing it, and your kindness will have its effect.	1 - Se tu fai del bene, bada a chi lo fai, e avrai riconoscenza molta per i tuoi benefizi.
2 Do good to the just man and reward will be yours, if not from him, from the LORD.	2 Fa' del bene al giusto e ne avrai ricompensa grande: se non da lui, certo dal Signore.
3 No good comes to him who gives comfort to the wicked, nor is it an act of mercy that he does.	3 Non merita beni chi è assiduo nel mal fare, e chi non fa elemosine; perchè anche l'Altissimo odia i peccatori, e usa misericordia con quei che si pentono.
4 Give to the good man, refuse the sinner; refresh the downtrodden, give nothing to the proud man.	4 Dà all'uomo pio, e non ti curare del peccatore; degli empi e dei peccatori [Dio] farà giustizia riservandoli per il giorno della vendetta.
5 No arms for combat should you give him, lest he use them against yourself;	5 Dà all'uomo dabbene, e non ti prender cura del peccatore.
6 With twofold evil you will meet for every good deed you do for him.	6 Fa' del bene all'umile, e non dar [nulla] all'empio; impedisci che gli sia dato il pane, perchè non divenga con esso più forte di te.
7 The Most High himself hates sinners, and upon the wicked he takes vengeance.	7 Tu raccatterai invero il doppio di male per tutto il bene che gli avrai fatto. Perchè l'Altissimo odia i peccatori, e degli empi farà vendetta.
8 In our prosperity we cannot know our friends; in adversity an enemy will not remain concealed.	8 Non si conosce nella prosperità l'amico, e non si nasconde nell'avversità il nemico.
9 When a man is successful even his enemy is friendly; in adversity even his friend disappears.	9 Nella prosperità di uno, sono in tristezza i suoi nemici, e nell'avversità di lui si riconosce l'amico.
10 Never trust your enemy, for his wickedness is like corrosion in bronze.	10 Non ti fidare del tuo nemico mai, perchè come il rame [che] arrugginisce, [così è] la sua malizia.
11 Even though he acts humbly and peaceably toward you, take care to be on your guard against him. Rub him as one polishes a brazen mirror, and you will find that there is still corrosion.	11 E s'egli s'umilia e va curvo, sta' attento e guardati da lui.
12 Let him not stand near you, lest he oust you and take your place. Let him not sit at your right hand, lest he then demand your seat, And in the end you appreciate my advice, when you groan with regret, as I warned you.	12 Non lo mettere accanto a te, nè farlo sedere alla tua destra; che non si rivolti contro il tuo posto, e cerchi occupare il tuo seggio; e tu conosca alla fine [la verità del] le mie parole, e ti punga [il ricordo] de' miei avvertimenti.
13 Who pities a snake charmer when he is bitten, or anyone who goes near a wild beast?	13 Chi avrà compassione dell'incantatore morso dalla serpe, e di tutti coloro che s'accostano alle belve? Cosi [non merita compassione] chi s'accompagna con un furfante, e si frammischia a' suoi peccati.
14 So is it with the companion of the proud man, who is involved in his sins:	14 Per un'ora resterà con te, ma se ti volgi altrove, non la durerà.
15 While you stand firm, he makes no bold move; but if you slip, he cannot hold back.	15 Con le sue labbra parla dolce il nemico, e nel suo cuore tende insidie per precipitarti nella fossa.
16 With his lips an enemy speaks sweetly, but in his heart he schemes to plunge you into the abyss. Though your enemy has tears in his eyes, if given the chance, he will never have enough of your blood.	16 Con i suoi occhi versa lagrime il nemico, e se trova l'occasione, non è [mai] sazio di sangue.
17 If evil comes upon you, you will find him at hand; feigning to help, he will trip you up,	17 E se ti capita una sciagura, lo troverai là prima [di te];
18 Then he will nod his head and clap his hands and hiss repeatedly, and show his true face.	18 con i suoi occhi versa lagrime il nemico, e facendo le viste d'aiutarti, ti darà il gambetto.
	19 [Allora] scuoterà il capo e batterà le mani, e sussurrando molte cose, muterà di viso.
