Sirach 12

1 If you do good, know for whom you are doing it, and your kindness will have its effect.	1 Se fai il bene, sappi a chi lo fai; così avrai una ricompensa per i tuoi benefici.
2 Do good to the just man and reward will be yours, if not from him, from the LORD.	2 Fa' il bene al pio e ne avrai il contraccambio, se non da lui, certo dall'Altissimo.
3 No good comes to him who gives comfort to the wicked, nor is it an act of mercy that he does.	3 Nessun beneficio a chi si ostina nel male né a chi rifiuta di fare l'elemosina.
4 Give to the good man, refuse the sinner; refresh the downtrodden, give nothing to the proud man.	4 Dà al pio e non aiutare il peccatore.
5 No arms for combat should you give him, lest he use them against yourself;	5 Benefica il misero e non dare all'empio, impedisci che gli diano il pane e tu non dargliene, perché egli non ne usi per dominarti; difatti tu riceverai il male in doppia misura per tutti i benefici che gli avrai fatto.
6 With twofold evil you will meet for every good deed you do for him.	6 Poiché anche l'Altissimo odia i peccatori e farà giustizia degli empi.
7 The Most High himself hates sinners, and upon the wicked he takes vengeance.	7 Dà al buono e non aiutare il peccatore.
8 In our prosperity we cannot know our friends; in adversity an enemy will not remain concealed.	8 L'amico non si può riconoscere nella prosperità, ma nell'avversità il nemico non si nasconderà.
9 When a man is successful even his enemy is friendly; in adversity even his friend disappears.	9 Quando uno prospera, i suoi nemici sono nel dolore; ma quando uno è infelice, anche l'amico se ne separa.
10 Never trust your enemy, for his wickedness is like corrosion in bronze.	10 Non fidarti mai del tuo nemico, poiché, come il metallo s'arrugginisce, così la sua malvagità.
11 Even though he acts humbly and peaceably toward you, take care to be on your guard against him. Rub him as one polishes a brazen mirror, and you will find that there is still corrosion.	11 Anche se si abbassa e cammina curvo, sta' attento e guardati da lui; compòrtati con lui come chi pulisce uno specchio e ti accorgerai che la sua ruggine non resiste a lungo.
12 Let him not stand near you, lest he oust you and take your place. Let him not sit at your right hand, lest he then demand your seat, And in the end you appreciate my advice, when you groan with regret, as I warned you.	12 Non metterlo al tuo fianco, perché non ti rovesci e si ponga al tuo posto, non farlo sedere alla tua destra, perché non ricerchi la tua sedia, e alla fine tu conosca la verità delle mie parole e senta rimorso per i miei detti.
13 Who pities a snake charmer when he is bitten, or anyone who goes near a wild beast?	13 Chi avrà pietà di un incantatore morso da un serpente e di quanti si avvicinano alle belve?
14 So is it with the companion of the proud man, who is involved in his sins:	14 Così capita a chi si associa a un peccatore e s'imbratta dei suoi misfatti.
15 While you stand firm, he makes no bold move; but if you slip, he cannot hold back.	15 Per un momento rimarrà con te, ma se cadi, egli non reggerà più.
16 With his lips an enemy speaks sweetly, but in his heart he schemes to plunge you into the abyss. Though your enemy has tears in his eyes, if given the chance, he will never have enough of your blood.	16 Il nemico ha il dolce sulle labbra, ma in cuore medita di gettarti in una fossa. Il nemico avrà lacrime agli occhi, ma se troverà l'occasione, non si sazierà del tuo sangue.
17 If evil comes upon you, you will find him at hand; feigning to help, he will trip you up,	17 Se ti capiterà il male, egli sarà là per il primo e, con il pretesto di aiutarti, ti prenderà per il tallone.
18 Then he will nod his head and clap his hands and hiss repeatedly, and show his true face.	18 Scuoterà il capo e batterà le mani, poi bisbigliando a lungo cambierà faccia.
