Sirach 12

NEW AMERICAN BIBLE	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 If you do good, know for whom you are doing it, and your kindness will have its effect.	1 Si haces el bien, mira a quién lo haces, y te darán las gracias por tus beneficios.
2 Do good to the just man and reward will be yours, if not from him, from the LORD.	2 Haz el bien al hombre bueno, y tendrás tu recompensa, si no de él, ciertamente del Altísimo.
3 No good comes to him who gives comfort to the wicked, nor is it an act of mercy that he does.	3 No recibe bienes el que persiste en el mal y el que no agradece la limosna.
4 Give to the good man, refuse the sinner; refresh the downtrodden, give nothing to the proud man.	4 Da al hombre bueno, pero no ayudes al pecador.
5 No arms for combat should you give him, lest he use them against yourself;	5 Sé bueno con el humilde, pero no des el impío: rehúsale su pan, no se lo des, no sea que así llegue a dominarte, y entonces recibirás un doble mal por todo el bien que le hayas hecho.
6 With twofold evil you will meet for every good deed you do for him.	6 Porque también el Altísimo detesta a los pecadores y dará su merecido a los impíos.
7 The Most High himself hates sinners, and upon the wicked he takes vengeance.	7 Da al hombre bueno, pero no ayudes al pecador.
8 In our prosperity we cannot know our friends; in adversity an enemy will not remain concealed.	8 No es en las buenas cuando se conoce al amigo, ni en las malas se oculta el enemigo.
9 When a man is successful even his enemy is friendly; in adversity even his friend disappears.	9 En las buenas, los enemigos se entristecen, y en las malas, hasta el amigo se aleja.
10 Never trust your enemy, for his wickedness is like corrosion in bronze.	10 Nunca te fíes de tu enemigo, porque la maldad lo corroe como la herrumbre al metal:
11 Even though he acts humbly and peaceably toward you, take care to be on your guard against him. Rub him as one polishes a brazen mirror, and you will find that there is still corrosion.	11 aunque se haga el humilde y camine encorvado, ten mucho cuidado y está alerta contra él; trátalo como quien pule un espejo, a ver si la herrumbre no terminó de corroerlo.
12 Let him not stand near you, lest he oust you and take your place. Let him not sit at your right hand, lest he then demand your seat, And in the end you appreciate my advice, when you groan with regret, as I warned you.	12 No lo pongas junto a ti, no sea que te derribe para ocupar tu puesto; no lo hagas sentar a tu derecha, no sea que pretenda tu mismo sitial, y al fin comprendas mis palabras y sientas pesar al recordarlas.
13 Who pities a snake charmer when he is bitten, or anyone who goes near a wild beast?	13 ¿Quién compadece al encantador mordido por la serpiente o al domador de animales salvajes?
14 So is it with the companion of the proud man, who is involved in his sins:	14 Lo mismo pasa con el que se acerca a un pecador y se entremezcla en sus pecados.
15 While you stand firm, he makes no bold move; but if you slip, he cannot hold back.	15 El permanecerá una hora contigo, pero si vacilas, no te dará una mano.
16 With his lips an enemy speaks sweetly, but in his heart he schemes to plunge you into the abyss. Though your enemy has tears in his eyes, if given the chance, he will never have enough of your blood.	16 El enemigo tiene miel en los labios, pero por dentro piensa cómo arrojarte en la fosa. El enemigo tiene lágrimas en los ojos, pero, llegada la ocasión, no habrá sangre que lo sacie.
17 If evil comes upon you, you will find him at hand; feigning to help, he will trip you up,	17 Si te pasa algo malo, lo encontrarás allí antes que a ti mismo; simulando ayudarte, te hará una zancadilla:
18 Then he will nod his head and clap his hands and hiss repeatedly, and show his true face.	18 moverá la cabeza y aplaudirá, hablará entre dientes y pondrá otra cara.
