1 Boast not of tomorrow, for you know not what any day may bring forth.	1 - Non ti dar vanto del domani, perchè non sai quel che nascerà il giorno appresso.
2 Let another praise you--not your own mouth; Someone else--not your own lips.	2 Ti lodi un altro e non la tua bocca; un estraneo e non le tue labbra.
3 Stone is heavy, and sand a burden, but a fool's provocation is heavier than both.	3 Grave è la pietra e pesante la sabbia, ma l'ira dello stolto è più grave di tutte e due.
4 Anger is relentless, and wrath overwhelming-- but before jealousy who can stand?	4 L'ira non ha misericordia nè il furore impetuoso, e chi potrà reggere all'impeto d'un uomo concitato?
5 Better is an open rebuke than a love that remains hidden.	5 È meglio un'aperta riprensioneche un amore dissimulato.
6 Wounds from a friend may be accepted as well meant, but the greetings of an enemy one prays against.	6 Meglio le percosse di chi ti vuol beneche i falsi baci di chi ti vuol male.
7 One who is full, tramples on virgin honey; but to the man who is hungry, any bitter thing is sweet.	7 L'anima sazia si metterà sotto i piedi il favo del miele, ma l'anima che ha fame troverà dolce anche l'amaro.
8 Like a bird that is far from its nest is a man who is far from his home.	8 Come l'uccello che migra dal suo nido, così l'uomo che abbandona il suo luogo.
9 Perfume and incense gladden the heart, but by grief the soul is torn asunder.	9 D'unguento e di vari profumi si rallegra il cuore, e dei buoni consigli dell'amico l'anima si sente raddolcire.
10 Your own friend and your father's friend forsake not; but if ruin befalls you, enter not a kinsman's house. Better is a neighbor near at hand than a brother far away.	10 Il tuo amico e l'amico di tuo padre non lo lasciare; e nel dì della tua disgrazia, non entrare nella casa del fratello. Meglio un vicino accanto, che un fratello lontano.
11 If you are wise, my son, you will gladden my heart, and I will be able to rebut him who tuants me.	11 Applicati alla sapienza, figlio mio, e rallegrami il cuore, affinchè tu abbia una parola da rispondere a chi ci voglia screditare.
12 The shrewd man perceives evil and hides; simpletons continue on and suffer the penalty.	12 L'uomo accorto, vedendo il male, si mise al riparo; gl'incauti, passando oltre, pagarono il fio.
13 Take his garment who becomes surety for another, and for the sake of a stranger, yield it up!	13 Prendi il mantello a colui che ha fatto sicurtà per uno straniero, ed a conto degli estranei fatti consegnare il pegno.
14 When one greets his neighbor with a loud voice in the early morning, a curse can be laid to his charge.	14 Chi benedice il suo prossimo a gran voce alzandosi al mattino, sarà simile a chi lo maledice.
15 For a persistent leak on a rainy day the match is a quarrelsome woman.	15 Tetto gocciolante in una giornata piovosa e donna rissosa, si rassomigliano:
16 He who keeps her stores up a stormwind; he cannot tell north from south.	16 chi pretende tenerla è come chi voglia tener il vento, l'olio della propria destra egli chiama.
17 As iron sharpens iron, so man sharpens his fellow man.	17 Il ferro col ferro s'aguzza, e un uomo aguzza l'ingegno all'altro.
18 He who tends a fig tree eats its fruit, and he who is attentive to his master will be enriched.	18 Chi fa la guardia al fico mangerà del suo frutto, e chi ha cura del suo padrone sarà onorato.
19 As one face differs from another, so does one human heart from another.	19 Come nell'acqua sono visibili i visi di quelli che vi si specchiano, così i cuori degli uomini sono visibili ai prudenti.
20 The nether world and the abyss are never satisfied; so too the eyes of men.	20 L'Inferno e la Perdizione non si saziano mai, così anche gli occhi degli uomini, non si saziano mai.
21 As the crucible tests silver and the furnace gold, so a man is tested by the praise he receives.	21 Come nel crogiolo si prova l'argento e nel fornello l'oro, così l'uomo si prova per la bocca di chi lo loda. Il cuore dell'iniquo ricerca il male, il cuor retto ricerca la scienza.
22 Though you should pound the fool to bits with the pestle, amid the grits in a mortar, his folly would not go out of him.	22 Ancorchè tu pestassi lo stolto nel mortaio, come l'orzo battendo sopra col pestello, non gli si leverà la sua stoltezza.
23 Take good care of your flocks, give careful attention to your herds;	23 Infòrmati bene dello stato del tuo bestiame, ed abbi cura assidua delle tue greggi,
24 For wealth lasts not forever, nor even a crown from age to age.	24 perchè non avrai sempre il potere, ma la corona passerà da generazione a generazione.
25 When the grass is taken away and the aftergrowth appears, and the mountain greens are gathered in,	25 I prati sono in fiore e vestiti d'erbe verdeggianti; già si sono raccolti i fieni al monte.
26 The lambs will provide you with clothing, and the goats will bring the price of a field,	26 Hai gli agnelli pel tuo vestito, e i capretti quale equivalente d'un podere:
27 And there will be ample goat's milk to supply you, to supply your household, and maintenance for your maidens.	27 accontentati del latte delle capre per tuo cibo, per il sostentamento di casa tua, e pel vitto delle tue ancelle.
