Proverbs 22

NEW AMERICAN BIBLE	VULGATA
1 A good name is more desirable than great riches, and high esteem, than gold and silver.	1 Melius est nomen bonum quam divitiæ multæ ; super argentum et aurum gratia bona.
2 Rich and poor have a common bond: the LORD is the maker of them all.	2 Dives et pauper obviaverunt sibi : utriusque operator est Dominus.
3 The shrewd man perceives evil and hides, while simpletons continue on and suffer the penalty.	3 Callidus vidit malum, et abscondit se ; innocens pertransiit, et afflictus est damno.
4 The reward of humility and fear of the LORD is riches, honor and life.	4 Finis modestiæ timor Domini, divitiæ, et gloria, et vita.
5 Thorns and snares are on the path of the crooked; he who would safeguard his life will shun them.	5 Arma et gladii in via perversi ; custos autem animæ suæ longe recedit ab eis.
6 Train a boy in the way he should go; even when he is old, he will not swerve from it.	6 Proverbium est : adolescens juxta viam suam ; etiam cum senuerit, non recedet ab ea.
7 The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is the slave of the lender.	7 Dives pauperibus imperat, et qui accipit mutuum servus est fœnerantis.
8 He who sows iniquity reaps calamity, and the rod destroys his labors.	8 Qui seminat iniquitatem metet mala, et virga iræ suæ consummabitur.
9 The kindly man will be blessed, for he gives of his sustenance to the poor.	9 Qui pronus est ad misericordiam benedicetur : de panibus enim suis dedit pauperi. Victoriam et honorem acquiret qui dat munera ; animam autem aufert accipientium.
10 Expel the arrogant man and discord goes out; strife and insult cease.	10 Ejice derisorem, et exibit cum eo jurgium, cessabuntque causæ et contumeliæ.
11 The LORD loves the pure of heart; the man of winning speech has the king for his friend.	11 Qui diligit cordis munditiam, propter gratiam labiorum suorum habebit amicum regem.
12 The eyes of the LORD safeguard knowledge, but he defeats the projects of the faithless.	12 Oculi Domini custodiunt scientiam, et supplantantur verba iniqui.
13 The sluggard says, "A lion is outside; in the streets I might be slain."	13 Dicit piger : Leo est foris ; in medio platearum occidendus sum.
14 The mouth of the adulteress is a deep pit; he with whom the LORD is angry will fall into it.	14 Fovea profunda os alienæ : cui iratus est Dominus, incidet in eam.
15 Folly is close to the heart of a child, but the rod of discipline will drive it far from him.	15 Stultitia colligata est in corde pueri, et virga disciplinæ fugabit eam.
16 He who oppresses the poor to enrich himself will yield up his gains to the rich as sheer loss.	16 Qui calumniatur pauperem ut augeat divitias suas, dabit ipse ditiori, et egebit.
17 The sayings of the wise: Incline your ear, and hear my words, and apply your heart to my doctrine;	17 Inclina aurem tuam, et audi verba sapientium : appone autem cor ad doctrinam meam,
18 For it will be well if you keep them in your bosom, if they all are ready on your lips.	18 quæ pulchra erit tibi cum servaveris eam in ventre tuo, et redundabit in labiis tuis :
19 That your trust may be in the LORD, I make known to you the words of Amen-em-Ope.	19 ut sit in Domino fiducia tua, unde et ostendi eam tibi hodie.
20 Have I not written for you the "Thirty," with counsels and knowledge,	20 Ecce descripsi eam tibi tripliciter, in cogitationibus et scientia :
21 To teach you truly how to give a dependable report to one who sends you?	21 ut ostenderem tibi firmitatem et eloquia veritatis, respondere ex his illis qui miserunt te.
22 Injure not the poor because they are poor, nor crush the needy at the gate;	22 Non facias violentiam pauperi quia pauper est, neque conteras egenum in porta :
23 For the LORD will defend their cause, and will plunder the lives of those who plunder them.	23 quia judicabit Dominus causam ejus, et configet eos qui confixerunt animam ejus.
24 Be not friendly with a hotheaded man, nor the companion of a wrathful man,	24 Noli esse amicus homini iracundo, neque ambules cum viro furioso :
25 Lest you learn his ways, and get yourself into a snare.	25 ne forte discas semitas ejus, et sumas scandalum animæ tuæ.
26 Be not one of those who give their hand in pledge, of those who become surety for debts;	26 Noli esse cum his qui defigunt manus suas, et qui vades se offerunt pro debitis :
27 For if you have not the means to pay, your bed will be taken from under you.	27 si enim non habes unde restituas, quid causæ est ut tollat operimentum de cubili tuo ?
28 Remove not the ancient landmark which your fathers set up.	28 Ne transgrediaris terminos antiquos, quos posuerunt patres tui.
29 You see a man skilled at his work? He will stand in the presence of kings; he will not stand in the presence of obscure men.	29 Vidisti virum velocem in opere suo ? coram regibus stabit, nec erit ante ignobiles.
