For the leader. A psalm of David; a song.1 Unto the end. For those who will be changed: of David.
God will arise for battle; the enemy will be scattered; those who hate God will flee.2 Save me, O God, for the waters have entered, even to my soul.
The wind will disperse them like smoke; as wax is melted by fire, so the wicked will perish before God.3 I have become stuck in a deep quagmire, and there is no firm footing. I have arrived at the height of the sea, and a tempest has overwhelmed me.
Then the just will be glad; they will rejoice before God; they will celebrate with great joy.4 I have endured hardships, while crying out. My jaws have become hoarse; my eyes have failed. Meanwhile, I hope in my God.
Sing to God, praise the divine name; exalt the rider of the clouds. Rejoice before this God whose name is the LORD.5 Those who hate me without cause have been multiplied beyond the hairs of my head. My enemies, who persecuted me unjustly, have been strengthened. Then I was required to pay for what I did not take.
Father of the fatherless, defender of widows-- this is the God whose abode is holy,6 O God, you know my foolishness, and my offenses have not been hidden from you.
Who gives a home to the forsaken, who leads prisoners out to prosperity, while rebels live in the desert.7 Let those who wait for you, O Lord, the Lord of hosts, not be shamed in me. Let those who seek you, O God of Israel, not be confounded over me.
God, when you went forth before your people, when you marched through the desert, Selah8 For because of you, I have endured reproach; confusion has covered my face.
The earth quaked, the heavens shook, before God, the One of Sinai, before God, the God of Israel.9 I have become a stranger to my brothers and a sojourner to the sons of my mother.
You claimed a land as your own, O God;10 For zeal for your house has consumed me, and the reproaches of those who reproached you have fallen upon me.
your people settled there. There you poured abundant rains, God, graciously given to the poor in their need.11 And I covered my soul with fasting, and it has become a reproach to me.
All you people so numerous,12 And I put on a haircloth as my garment, and I became a parable to them.
b) Every household will share the booty,13 Those who sat at the gate spoke against me, and those who drank wine made me their song.
c) its wings covered with yellow gold."14 But as for me, truly, my prayer is to you, O Lord. This time has pleased you well, O God. In the multitude of your mercy, in the truth of your salvation, hear me.
When the Almighty routed the kings there, the spoils were scattered like snow on Zalmon.15 Rescue me from the quagmire, so that I may not become trapped. Free me from those who hate me and from deep waters.
You high mountains of Bashan, you rugged mountains of Bashan,16 Do not allow the tempest of water to submerge me, nor the deep to absorb me. And do not allow the well to close in on me.
You rugged mountains, why look with envy at the mountain where God has chosen to dwell, where the LORD resides forever?17 Hear me, O Lord, for your mercy is kind. Look upon me, according to the fullness of your compassion.
God's chariots were myriad, thousands upon thousands; from Sinai the Lord entered the holy place.18 And do not turn your face away from your servant, for I am in trouble: heed me quickly.
You went up to its lofty height; you took captives, received slaves as tribute. No rebels can live in the presence of God.19 Attend to my soul, and free it. Rescue me, because of my enemies.
Blessed be the Lord day by day, God, our salvation, who carries us. Selah20 You know my reproach, and my confusion, and my reverence.
Our God is a God who saves; escape from death is in the LORD God's hands.21 All those who trouble me are in your sight; my heart has anticipated reproach and misery. And I sought for one who might grieve together with me, but there was no one, and for one who might console me, and I found no one.
God will crush the skulls of the enemy, the hairy heads of those who walk in sin.22 And they gave me gall for my food. And in my thirst, they gave me vinegar to drink.
The Lord has said: "Even from Bashan I will fetch them, fetch them even from the depths of the sea.23 Let their table be a snare before them, and a retribution, and a scandal.
You will wash your feet in your enemy's blood; the tongues of your dogs will lap it up."24 Let their eyes be darkened, so that they may not see, and may their back always be crooked.
Your procession comes into view, O God, your procession into the holy place, my God and king.25 Pour out your indignation upon them, and may the fury of your anger take hold of them.
The singers go first, the harpists follow; in their midst girls sound the timbrels.26 May their dwelling place be deserted, and may there be no one who dwells in their tabernacles.
In your choirs, bless God; bless the LORD, you from Israel's assemblies.27 For they persecuted whomever you struck. And they have added to the grief of my wounds.
In the lead is Benjamin, few in number; there the princes of Judah, a large throng, the princes of Zebulun, the princes of Naphtali, too.28 Assign an iniquity upon their iniquity, and may they not enter into your justice.
Summon again, O God, your power, the divine power you once showed for us.29 Delete them from the Book of the Living, and let them not be written down with the just.
Show it from your temple on behalf of Jerusalem, that kings may bring you tribute.30 I am poor and sorrowful, but your salvation, O God, has taken me up.
Roar at the wild beast of the reeds, the herd of mighty bulls, the lords of nations; scatter the nations that delight in war.31 I will praise the name of God with a canticle, and I will magnify him with praise.
Exact rich tribute from lower Egypt, from upper Egypt, gold and silver; make Ethiopia extend its hands to God.32 And it will please God more than a new calf producing horns and hoofs.
You kingdoms of the earth, sing to God; chant the praises of the Lord, Selah33 Let the poor see and rejoice. Seek God, and your soul will live.
Who rides the heights of the ancient heavens, whose voice is thunder, mighty thunder.34 For the Lord has heard the poor, and he has not despised his prisoners.
Confess the power of God, whose majesty protects Israel, whose power is in the sky.35 Let the heavens and the earth praise him: the sea, and everything that crawls in it.
Awesome is God in his holy place, the God of Israel, who gives power and strength to his people. Blessed be God!36 For God will save Zion, and the cities of Judah will be built up. And they will dwell there, and they will acquire it by inheritance.
And the offspring of his servants will possess it; and those who love his name will dwell in it.
