Siracide 11

1 La saggezza dell'umile lo innalzerà, e farallo sedere nel consesso de' magnati.	1 The wisdom of one who is humble will exalt his head, and will cause him to sit down in the midst of great men.
2 Non lodare un uomo per la sua avvenenza, e non disprezzare alcuno per quel, che di lui apparisce:	2 You should not praise a man for his beauty, and you should not despise a man for his appearances.
3 Piccola cosa trai volatili è l'ape, ma il suo frutto ogni dolcezza sorpassa.	3 The bee is small among flying things, but its fruit holds the summit of sweetness.
4 Non ti gloriare delle vestimenta, e non ti invanire quando sarai innalzato agli onori; perocché solo dell'Altissimo son mirabili le opere; e le opere di lui sono gloriose, e segrete, e non conosciute.	4 You should not glory in clothing at any time, and you should not let yourself be extolled in the day of your honor. For the works of the Most High alone are wondrous; and glorious and hidden and unseen are his works.
5 Sederono in trono molti tiranni: e tal portò il diadema, a cui nissuno pensava.	5 Many tyrants have sat upon a throne, and one whom no one would admire has worn a diadem.
6 Molti potenti caddero in grande oppressione; e i magnati furon dati in potere altrui.	6 Many powerful men have been powerfully cast down, and the illustrious have been handed over into the hands of others.
7 Non biasimare nissuno prima di informarti; e quando sarai informato, riprenderai con giustizia.	7 Before you inquire, you should not place blame on anyone; and when you have inquired, reprove justly.
8 Non risponder parola prima di aver sentito; e non interrompere l'altrui discorso.	8 Before you listen, you should not respond a word; and you should not interrupt in the middle of a discourse.
9 Non contendere per cosa, che nulla a te importa; e non unirti a giudicare con quei, che peccano.	9 You should not contend in a matter which does not concern you, and you should not sit in judgment together with sinners.
10 Figliuolo non impicciarti in molte cose; perocché se diverai ricco, non sarai esente da colpa. E andando dietro (a molte cose) non verrai a capo di alcuna; e qualunque diligenza tu facci, non potrai trarti fuora.	10 Son, you should not be involved in many matters. And if you become rich, you will not be free from transgression. For if you pursue, you will not apprehend; and if you run ahead, you will not escape.
11 Taluno si affanna, e si da da fare, e patisce, essendo privo di pietà, e tanto meno arricchisce:	11 There is an impious man who labors and hurries and grieves, but all the more will he be without abundance.
12 Tal altro è languido, e bisognoso di ajuto, e privo di forze, e ricco di miseria:	12 There is a debilitated man in need of recovery, who is lacking in strength and abundant in poverty.
13 E l'occhio di Dio mira costui benignamente, e lo solleva dal suo abbattimento, e gli fa alzare la testa, e molti ne restano ammirati, e a Dio ne rendono onore.	13 Yet the eye of God has looked with favor upon him for his benefit, and he has lifted him up from his humiliation, and he has exalted his head. And many have wondered at him, and they have honored God.
14 I beni, e i mali, la vita, e la morte, la povertà, e la ricchezza vengon da Dio.	14 Good things and misfortune, life and death, poverty and wealth, are from God.
15 La sapienza, e la disciplina, e la scienza della legge sono da Dio: la carità, e le opere de' buoni sono da lui.	15 Wisdom, and discipline, and knowledge of the law are with God. Love and the ways of good things are with him.
16 L'errore, e le tenebre sono ingenite ai peccatori: e quelli, che esultano nel male, invecchiano nella malizia.	16 Error and darkness have been created by sinners. And those who exult in evil, grow old in evil.
17 Il dono di Dio rimane presso de' giusti, e con vantaggiosi progressi anderà crescendo continuamente.	17 The gift of God remains with the just man, and his advancement will have success unto eternity.
18 Taluno si fa ricco colla parsimonia, e questo sol frutto ha per sua mercede,	18 There is one who is enriched by spending sparingly, and this is the extent of his reward.
19 Che dice: Io son contento, e adesso mangerò de' miei beni io solo.	19 About this, he says: “I have found rest for myself, and now I alone will eat from my goods.”
20 Ma egli non sa quanto tempo vi sia, perché la morte si accosti, ed egli lasci ad altri ogni cosa, e si muoja.	20 But he does not know how much time will pass before death approaches, and then he must leave everything behind to others and die.
21 Tienti costante al tuo patto, e sopra di questo ragiona, e invecchia nell'adempiere quel, che ti è comandato.	21 Stand fast in your covenant, and become familiar with it, and grow old in the work of your commandments.
22 Non ti abbagli il fare de' peccatori; ma confida in Dio, e sta al tuo posto;	22 You should not spend time in the works of sinners. Instead, trust in God and remain in your own place.
23 Perocché è cosa facile dinanzi a Dio l'arricchire il povero in un momento.	23 For it is easy, in the eyes of God, to make a pauper suddenly rich.
24 La benedizione di Dio corre a rimunerare il giusto, e in brev'ora fa, che egli cresca, e fruttifichi.	24 The blessing of God hurries to reward the just man, and in a fleeting hour his advancement bears fruit.
25 Non dire: Che ho io da fare? e qual bene omai avrò io?	25 You should not say: “What do I need?” or, “What good will there be for me in this?”
26 Non dire: io basto a me stesso: e qual male può mai venirmi?	26 You should not say: “I have enough for myself,” or, “What could be worse than this?”
27 Nel dì felice non ti scordare de' cattivi giorni, e nel giorno cattivo non ti scordare del giorno felice:	27 In a day of good things, you should not be forgetful of misfortunes. And in a day of misfortunes, you should not be forgetful of good things.
28 Ed è cosa facile a Dio il rendere a ciascheduno secondo le opere sue nel dì della morte.	28 For it is easy, in the sight of God, on the day of one’s passing, to repay each one according to his ways.
29 Il male di un'ora fa dimenticare le grandi delizie; perché nella fine dell'uomo si manifestano le sue operazioni.	29 The affliction of an hour causes one to forget great delights, and in the end of a man is the uncovering of his works.
30 Non lodar verun uomo prima della sua morte; perocché l'uomo si riconosce da' suoi figliuoli.	30 You should not praise any man before death. For a man is known by his children.
31 Non introdurre in casa tua ogni sorta di persone; perocché molte sono le insidie degli ingannatori;	31 You should not bring every man into your house. For many are the snares of the deceitful.
32 Perocché come uno stomaco fetido getta dei rutti, e come la pernice è condotta alla gabbia, e il daino al laccio, cosi va la cosa riguardo al cuor del superbo, che osserva come da una vedetta la caduta del suo prossimo.	32 For as a stomach with a bad smell vomits, and as a partridge is led into a cage, and like a deer led into a snare, so also is the heart of the arrogant. And it is like a bystander watching his neighbor fall.
33 Perocché egli il bene convertendo in male sta tendendo insidie, e agli eletti stessi apporrà delle macchie.	33 For it lies in ambush, and then turns good into evil, and it will place the blame on the elect.
34 Da una sola scintilla divampa il fuoco: e un solo ingannatore moltiplica le stragi; perché l'uom peccatore tende a spargere il sangue.	34 From one spark, a great fire grows; and from one deceitful man, much blood flows. But a very sinful man lies in ambush for blood.
35 Guardati dall'uomo malizioso macchinatore di guai, affinchè egli non abbia a tirarti addosso infamia per petua.	35 Pay close attention to yourself before a harmful man, for he fabricates evils. Otherwise, he may lead over you a whispered reproach unceasingly.
36 Ricevi in tua casa lo straniero, ed egli la metterà sottosopra, e ti rovinerà, e ti spoglierà anche del tuo.	36 Receive a stranger to yourself, and he will overthrow you with a whirlwind, and he will alienate you from what is your very own.
