Mark 15

KING JAMES BIBLE	NEW JERUSALEM
1 And straightway in the morning the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council, and bound Jesus, and carried him away, and delivered him to Pilate.	1 First thing in the morning, the chief priests, together with the elders and scribes and the rest of theSanhedrin, had their plan ready. They had Jesus bound and took him away and handed him over to Pilate.
2 And Pilate asked him, Art thou the King of the Jews? And he answering said unto him, Thou sayest it.	2 Pilate put to him this question, 'Are you the king of the Jews?' He replied, 'It is you who say it.'
3 And the chief priests accused him of many things: but he answered nothing.	3 And the chief priests brought many accusations against him.
4 And Pilate asked him again, saying, Answerest thou nothing? behold how many things they witness against thee.	4 Pilate questioned him again, 'Have you no reply at al ? See how many accusations they are bringingagainst you!'
5 But Jesus yet answered nothing; so that Pilate marvelled.	5 But, to Pilate's surprise, Jesus made no further reply.
6 Now at that feast he released unto them one prisoner, whomsoever they desired.	6 At festival time Pilate used to release a prisoner for them, any one they asked for.
7 And there was one named Barabbas, which lay bound with them that had made insurrection with him, who had committed murder in the insurrection.	7 Now a man called Barabbas was then in prison with the rebels who had committed murder during theuprising.
8 And the multitude crying aloud began to desire him to do as he had ever done unto them.	8 When the crowd went up and began to ask Pilate the customary favour,
9 But Pilate answered them, saying, Will ye that I release unto you the King of the Jews?	9 Pilate answered them, 'Do you want me to release for you the king of the Jews?'
10 For he knew that the chief priests had delivered him for envy.	10 For he realised it was out of jealousy that the chief priests had handed Jesus over.
11 But the chief priests moved the people, that he should rather release Barabbas unto them.	11 The chief priests, however, had incited the crowd to demand that he should release Barabbas forthem instead.
12 And Pilate answered and said again unto them, What will ye then that I shall do unto him whom ye call the King of the Jews?	12 Then Pilate spoke again, 'But in that case, what am I to do with the man you call king of the Jews?'
13 And they cried out again, Crucify him.	13 They shouted back, 'Crucify him!'
14 Then Pilate said unto them, Why, what evil hath he done? And they cried out the more exceedingly, Crucify him.	14 Pilate asked them, 'What harm has he done?' But they shouted al the louder, 'Crucify him!'
15 And so Pilate, willing to content the people, released Barabbas unto them, and delivered Jesus, when he had scourged him, to be crucified.	15 So Pilate, anxious to placate the crowd, released Barabbas for them and, after having Jesusscourged, he handed him over to be crucified.
16 And the soldiers led him away into the hall, called Praetorium; and they call together the whole band.	16 The soldiers led him away to the inner part of the palace, that is, the Praetorium, and cal ed thewhole cohort together.
17 And they clothed him with purple, and platted a crown of thorns, and put it about his head,	17 They dressed him up in purple, twisted some thorns into a crown and put it on him.
18 And began to salute him, Hail, King of the Jews!	18 And they began saluting him, 'Hail, king of the Jews!'
19 And they smote him on the head with a reed, and did spit upon him, and bowing their knees worshipped him.	19 They struck his head with a reed and spat on him; and they went down on their knees to do himhomage.
20 And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple from him, and put his own clothes on him, and led him out to crucify him.	20 And when they had finished making fun of him, they took off the purple and dressed him in his ownclothes. They led him out to crucify him.
21 And they compel one Simon a Cyrenian, who passed by, coming out of the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to bear his cross.	21 They enlisted a passer-by, Simon of Cyrene, father of Alexander and Rufus, who was coming in fromthe country, to carry his cross.
22 And they bring him unto the place Golgotha, which is, being interpreted, The place of a skull.	22 They brought Jesus to the place cal ed Golgotha, which means the place of the skul .
23 And they gave him to drink wine mingled with myrrh: but he received it not.	23 They offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he refused it.
24 And when they had crucified him, they parted his garments, casting lots upon them, what every man should take.	24 Then they crucified him, and shared out his clothing, casting lots to decide what each should get.
25 And it was the third hour, and they crucified him.	25 It was the third hour when they crucified him.
26 And the superscription of his accusation was written over, THE KING OF THE JEWS.	26 The inscription giving the charge against him read, 'The King of the Jews'.
27 And with him they crucify two thieves; the one on his right hand, and the other on his left.	27 And they crucified two bandits with him, one on his right and one on his left.
28 And the scripture was fulfilled, which saith, And he was numbered with the transgressors.	28
29 And they that passed by railed on him, wagging their heads, and saying, Ah, thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days,	29 The passers-by jeered at him; they shook their heads and said, 'Aha! So you would destroy theTemple and rebuild it in three days!
30 Save thyself, and come down from the cross.	30 Then save yourself; come down from the cross!'
31 Likewise also the chief priests mocking said among themselves with the scribes, He saved others; himself he cannot save.	31 The chief priests and the scribes mocked him among themselves in the same way with the words,'He saved others, he cannot save himself.
32 Let Christ the King of Israel descend now from the cross, that we may see and believe. And they that were crucified with him reviled him.	32 Let the Christ, the king of Israel, come down from the cross now, for us to see it and believe.' Eventhose who were crucified with him taunted him.
33 And when the sixth hour was come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour.	33 When the sixth hour came there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour.
34 And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? which is, being interpreted, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?	34 And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, 'Eloi, eloi, lama sabachthani?' which means, 'MyGod, my God, why have you forsaken me?'
35 And some of them that stood by, when they heard it, said, Behold, he calleth Elias.	35 When some of those who stood by heard this, they said, 'Listen, he is cal ing on Elijah.'
36 And one ran and filled a spunge full of vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink, saying, Let alone; let us see whether Elias will come to take him down.	36 Someone ran and soaked a sponge in vinegar and, putting it on a reed, gave it to him to drink saying,'Wait! And see if Elijah wil come to take him down.'
37 And Jesus cried with a loud voice, and gave up the ghost.	37 But Jesus gave a loud cry and breathed his last.
38 And the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom.	38 And the veil of the Sanctuary was torn in two from top to bottom.
39 And when the centurion, which stood over against him, saw that he so cried out, and gave up the ghost, he said, Truly this man was the Son of God.	39 The centurion, who was standing in front of him, had seen how he had died, and he said, 'In truth thisman was Son of God.'
40 There were also women looking on afar off: among whom was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the less and of Joses, and Salome;	40 There were some women watching from a distance. Among them were Mary of Magdala, Mary whowas the mother of James the younger and Joset, and Salome.
41 (Who also, when he was in Galilee, followed him, and ministered unto him;) and many other women which came up with him unto Jerusalem.	41 These used to follow him and look after him when he was in Galilee. And many other women werethere who had come up to Jerusalem with him.
42 And now when the even was come, because it was the preparation, that is, the day before the sabbath,	42 It was now evening, and since it was Preparation Day -- that is, the day before the Sabbath-
43 Joseph of Arimathaea, and honourable counseller, which also waited for the kingdom of God, came, and went in boldly unto Pilate, and craved the body of Jesus.	43 there came Joseph of Arimathaea, a prominent member of the Council, who himself lived in the hopeof seeing the kingdom of God, and he boldly went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.
44 And Pilate marvelled if he were already dead: and calling unto him the centurion, he asked him whether he had been any while dead.	44 Pilate, astonished that he should have died so soon, summoned the centurion and enquired if he hadbeen dead for some time.
45 And when he knew it of the centurion, he gave the body to Joseph.	45 Having been assured of this by the centurion, he granted the corpse to Joseph
46 And he bought fine linen, and took him down, and wrapped him in the linen, and laid him in a sepulchre which was hewn out of a rock, and rolled a stone unto the door of the sepulchre.	46 who bought a shroud, took Jesus down from the cross, wrapped him in the shroud and laid him in atomb which had been hewn out of the rock. He then rol ed a stone against the entrance to the tomb.
47 And Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses beheld where he was laid.	47 Mary of Magdala and Mary the mother of Joset took note of where he was laid.
