The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.1 The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.
Abraham begat Isaac; and Isaac begat Jacob; and Jacob begat Judas and his brethren;2 Abraham became the father of Isaac, Isaac the father of Jacob, Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers.
And Judas begat Phares and Zara of Thamar; and Phares begat Esrom; and Esrom begat Aram;3 Judah became the father of Perez and Zerah, whose mother was Tamar. Perez became the father of Hezron, Hezron the father of Ram,
And Aram begat Aminadab; and Aminadab begat Naasson; and Naasson begat Salmon;4 Ram the father of Amminadab. Amminadab became the father of Nahshon, Nahshon the father of Salmon,
And Salmon begat Booz of Rachab; and Booz begat Obed of Ruth; and Obed begat Jesse;5 Salmon the father of Boaz, whose mother was Rahab. Boaz became the father of Obed, whose mother was Ruth. Obed became the father of Jesse,
And Jesse begat David the king; and David the king begat Solomon of her that had been the wife of Urias;6 Jesse the father of David the king. David became the father of Solomon, whose mother had been the wife of Uriah.
And Solomon begat Roboam; and Roboam begat Abia; and Abia begat Asa;7 Solomon became the father of Rehoboam, Rehoboam the father of Abijah, Abijah the father of Asaph.
And Asa begat Josaphat; and Josaphat begat Joram; and Joram begat Ozias;8 Asaph became the father of Jehoshaphat, Jehoshaphat the father of Joram, Joram the father of Uzziah.
And Ozias begat Joatham; and Joatham begat Achaz; and Achaz begat Ezekias;9 Uzziah became the father of Jotham, Jotham the father of Ahaz, Ahaz the father of Hezekiah.
And Ezekias begat Manasses; and Manasses begat Amon; and Amon begat Josias;10 Hezekiah became the father of Manasseh, Manasseh the father of Amos, Amos the father of Josiah.
And Josias begat Jechonias and his brethren, about the time they were carried away to Babylon:11 Josiah became the father of Jechoniah and his brothers at the time of the Babylonian exile.
And after they were brought to Babylon, Jechonias begat Salathiel; and Salathiel begat Zorobabel;12 After the Babylonian exile, Jechoniah became the father of Shealtiel, Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel,
And Zorobabel begat Abiud; and Abiud begat Eliakim; and Eliakim begat Azor;13 Zerubbabel the father of Abiud. Abiud became the father of Eliakim, Eliakim the father of Azor,
And Azor begat Sadoc; and Sadoc begat Achim; and Achim begat Eliud;14 Azor the father of Zadok. Zadok became the father of Achim, Achim the father of Eliud,
And Eliud begat Eleazar; and Eleazar begat Matthan; and Matthan begat Jacob;15 Eliud the father of Eleazar. Eleazar became the father of Matthan, Matthan the father of Jacob,
And Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.16 Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary. Of her was born Jesus who is called the Messiah.
So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; and from David until the carrying away into Babylon are fourteen generations; and from the carrying away into Babylon unto Christ are fourteen generations.17 Thus the total number of generations from Abraham to David is fourteen generations; from David to the Babylonian exile, fourteen generations; from the Babylonian exile to the Messiah, fourteen generations.
Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.18 Now this is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about. When his mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found with child through the holy Spirit.
Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privily.19 Joseph her husband, since he was a righteous man, yet unwilling to expose her to shame, decided to divorce her quietly.
But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost.20 Such was his intention when, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home. For it is through the holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her.
And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.21 She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins."
Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying,22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet:
Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.23 "Behold, the virgin shall be with child and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel," which means "God is with us."
Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife:24 When Joseph awoke, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took his wife into his home.
And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS.25 He had no relations with her until she bore a son, and he named him Jesus.
